June 2014. On the THC Trail, the same route all those brave pioneers traversed (the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, the Pony Express or as most people know it now: Hwy 80). Made it through Iowa and into Nebraska. I'm not even excited yet about getting to Colorado. The cornfields of Iowa enthrall me and I'm desperately seeking the Platte River to appease my historical mind. Real drama, on the western side, is yet to come.

Driving through the heartland of America, the road seems endless, the horizon longer. Shiny blades of grass wave like a flag under a sun-bleached sky. We're listening to Jeff Beck, Lucy Show, Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, Wire, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Peter Murphy. The music flows like the loyal Platte; constant, close. Ever unknowable.

@Deja Vu, what happened exactly we're unsure of. We had already seen some bad accidents along with way. Just prior to noticing this black smoke on the highway, we saw a car completely flipped over on the side of the road. The police had arrived only minutes earlier. So the smoke kind of freaked us out. What more could happen? I wasn't prepared for what my video and photos would show me.
I felt like our Colorado Quest was something of a trial by fire. In the next episode we encounter another trial...

Anyway, more notes from the THC trail:

Stopping for gas. You can get everything you need at the American truckstop

Where we are.

Patrick, the Nebraska Tourism rep, gave his permission to share his picture. He shuffled rapidly through his own collection of photos and then said he wanted to show everyone his pride and joy. He also said that people don't know how beautiful Nebraska is. "You can lay down at night and it's so peaceful and dark. You hear the sounds of the crickets and look up at a sky that is just filled with stars [there is no ambient light]".
