Just a thought on the alerts

Ok, so here's how I tend to use FC:

I open up the FC homepage, and go straight for the alerts tab.

I open up all the threads that have replies, and basically read them/reply a appropriate.

I like that the alerts tells you how many threads have replies, but it also lumps the likes you've received info the same list.

It's kinda a :o moment when you log on and see 28 alerts, but then you click on the alerts tab, and see 15 of them are likes, it makes a bit more sense.

Since there's already a "likes you have received" tab, I'm just thinking perhaps it would make more sense for new likes to add their "alert count" to that as opposed to the regular alerts which to me, makes sense to be just for replies/posts where you got tagged.

Not even sure if its possible with the current software, but it makes sense to me...

I totally see your point. For some reason I like that the alerts show likes I've received, posts I'm tagged in, posts made after mine, etc. One stop shopping.

My workaround for the alert overload you described, is to visit the site more often!

Haha, well, I posted up some pics in a couple of threads yesterday, and checked FC just before I wet to bed.

I check it this morning, and I've got 25 alerts, but only 8 actual threads with posts in them.

I agree with the tagged posts, threads with new posts, and anything related to new content going into the general alerts tab, it's just things like likes which don't necessarily mean there's new contet in the thread that I'm felling would be better suited on the other tab.

(I'm usually on FC at least once a day, often more than that.)

Maybe if your posts were less interesting, you'd get less likes. :p

Edit: Oops, I contributed to the problem by liking your post above. :brow:

I like the fact that the likes are lumped with the other alerts. I usually click on the 'like alerts' in the mornings to see what kind of stupid post(s) I made the night before in a vaked state that I would otherwise had totally forgotten.

If I understand you correctly, you can get what you want by visiting your Alert Preferences and turning off alerts for Likes.

Hey don't want to start a new thread just for that, because it's also alert-related, so the title still stands...

But I have noticed quite a few times a bug in the alerts where I receive notifications from threads I didn't subscribe to.

It tells me there are new posts and if I go to said thread, I see that I'm not watching it (as expected)

Anyone noticed that problem?

I had to like everyone's comments in this thread to satisfy some and piss off others. I think some configurable options for each user's alerts would be nice, but at the same time it's satisfying to have many notifications. I think I like it for the same reason I like getting points and coins in video games. Releases endorphins.
