If you're depressing the pin and don't get gas, and get no hiss when you turn it on, that's two independent indications of no gas.

I suggest you go on that assumption and weigh your unit. It will hold about 3.1 grams more than when empty.

Fills depend on a lot of things, pressure amongst them. Trust the weight, it's the only accurate measure. Spitting back means nothing (as you've found out).

Anyway, you're dry I bet, about half a gram will give you a hiss, nearly a full gram for stable running I bet?

the problem is nothing happens when i attempt a purge--the thing's definitely being depressed, and i've tried a few different tools to make sure that wasn't the issue.
vicki: lucienne. i'm a newbie so it might be a shitty brand
It sounds like no gas is getting into it. Maybe a damaged tip on the can..? Or valve stuck in the IO, which might not be good news unless it can be re-seated somehow. Does it feel like a spring load while pressing it?
I'd google "lighter gas valve repair" to get a grasp on the mechanism and maybe some tips.
I had problems with getting gas in as well until I found a properly fitting tip. Than all was fine.

I have to agree that I believe also there is no gas in the unit.
The flaw may be a clogged fill nozzle on unit.
Something to try:
Get a syringe like a doctor give an injection with.
stick it into the fill nozzle carefully and slowly.
Go in about a quarter inch, and then pull the syringe plunger.
This can assist in removing a single fleck of dust or moisture that could be preventing proper filling.
One particle will become frozen in place as the butane begins to flow... forming a small ice plug in the filling nozzle.
Try it and see if you get a result.

The Iolite is very sensitive to quality butane, otherwise the nozzle clogs up

Understood. And other issues (like water or air contamination) can happen. But that's not in play here most likely since there is not only no hiss, but also no blowback from manually opening the valve. A plugged jet in the discharge line would not effect this.

There are two independent indicators of no gas (no hiss or blowback). I'd go that way......if the goal is getting it going. IMO it needs gas.

My thinking is that there is a plug in the fill line, stopping gas from ever getting in.
I believe the problem should be approached from the Iolites "fill hole".
I have seen:
  • An Iolite that had been handled with sweaty hands get complications from a wet spot at fill line.
  • An Iolite that had a tiny plug of hash oil from a butane cane that had been used to do a BHO run that was stuck on a fingertip.
I have seen problems the syringe could not fix... and that I could not analyze, but in the above two cases, the syringe worked.

Just got a new "filling chamber" the mouthpiece connections suck and I replaced the screen with a solo fine screen. Great to have this baby back in the routine!

So I picked up an extra iolite.. How should I store my old one? Full tank, empty, half? Does it matter? Thanks in advance!

Never empty. Never let it go empty without a plan. A tiny bit of moisture or dust could prove fatal.

Aside from that, any fill with liquid included will give full pressure (determined by temperature, not fill level). I store mine at least half full. I typically use a bit under 1.5 grams of gas per load (two sessions). The unit holds 3.1 or so max (but is often hard to fill to that level).

BTW, you really need to go by weight in such systems unless there's a sight glass.

Are all of the mouthpiece extensions loose? I taped every single one of mine together with electrical tape..

All of mine are the same size and fit....probably the same tooling used for all.

Tape gets messy, I suggest short pieces of 1/4 ID Silicone tube, that's what I used.

BTW next time you're buying spares for your VG (or even if you're not....) get a couple of the smaller (old) versions of the plastic MPs (half a buck each). Cut the skinny part off (that fits inside the VG) and you have an excellent tip for the Iolite (with a short piece of tubing to connect it to the stub).

Once you use it a while a little resiny stickyness{sic} will form to hold those extensions in place, otherwise I'd do the silicone tubing route OF suggested except the older vg mouthpiece part since the newer ones fit even better imho into a 1/4" id silicone tubing.

They are only loose for a short time.
They soon become glued in place, and you will only be able to tun them when the unit is warm.
You will need to clean them with Iso on occasion.
They fit the way they do for a reason.

I looked, and looked, and could not find any info, so I'm going to just ask. :)

What is the weight of the Iolite empty, and what is the weight when the butane tank is full? I'm trying to get a comparison. TIA

About 80 grams IIRC, but it varies a lot. My heaviest weighs the more empty than the lightest full, that much I remember.......at least I think I do..... You really need to weigh each one I think. Full they are 3 grams or so heavier than empty.

You could probably work backwards from it. Keep track for a while. It should be 3 grams less than 'the fullest fill I ever got'?

I only have one Iolite, but I just weighed it, and it weighed exactly 80.0 grams full. That weight was without the bowl and stem attached. I've never weighed it empty, and I'm not sure I want to let it get empty. I just used it this morning, then I topped off the tank. IMO, it's better to store it with a full tank, based on what I have read here.

I'd start out assuming it's about 77 grams empty then. Keep an eye on it, if you ever weigh say 80.5 grams, update your estimate to 77.5 empty?

It doesn't make much difference if it's full when you store it or only has 'some gas'. A few tenths of a gram will give the same pressure (protection) as a full one, but being full makes it ready to go for several sessions. I store mine full and loaded with bud.

I think I will weigh it after my next session. Just to see how much I use per session. Then I can get an idea of how many sessions I might get per tank.

Right. I've had my iolite for over a year and really want it to work but imo it's a piece of shit. I've used Newport, colibri and the quality of material is top drawer too. I own several vapes and really really want this wee vape to perform but get wispy vapor at best. Help?
