Herb Grinders

Right, unless I don't know what I am missing. The old "we don't know what we don't know" kind of thing... ;)

Edit: Ahhh, I see Chromium Crusher out there. That sounds familier and has similar teeth, but mine has no logo on the top. So, it may have been a CC knockoff...

If it turns easily and the meds get ripped through with ease, you should be fine without upgrade.
After a thorough Iso bath, you will notice an improved sharpness to any grinder.
If you still grind well with it dirty you are certainly in a good position.
Unless you want to get a second one as an acquisition to add to your vape tools!

Right, and mine doesn't, so I am betting it is a knockoff. It has worked well for many years now so until it can't do something I need I will just keep using it. I will clean it, though, with ISO and see if I get any bleeding. If I do that may "encourage" a change...

I have had this grinder for a really long time and it seems to work well. I don't know the brand for sure but I think it had crusher in the name. It has served me pretty well and the grind seems to work well with the Lotus. I have never cleaned it other than with a toothpick. How might a SCS or SC serve me better?

It reminds me of my old sharpstone (they've changed it a few times over the years, plus knockoffs adding to the confusion). If so it's a great grinder, scs is a little better not much though. It looks like the rims could use an iso scrub, it will turn great after that. There's no writing on top of the lid or on the bottom?

I love my mini Santa cruz shredder and wish I saved my money buying the large since I never use the large.
the smaller one sometimes can be Very difficult to turn it can hurt your hands but the grind is so much more finer I don't even bother with the large any more it seems the large falls through too big it may be good for joints but every vape I own works better with the finer grind the mini gives

Nope, top and bottom are just smooth surface. It's a 3" 4 pce with the top and bottom are gnarled on the edges for grip.

Might well be a Smart Crusher. The teeth are the same shape. I've bought a lot of grinders in the past, and this slightly offset tooth design (stolen from MixnBall ;) ) is the best I've ever used. You get 4 sharp edges that are more useful than the standard diamond shape without the resistance that the more blocky, squared off shape of the SCS provides when grinding moist bud. It's a keeper.

So, it may have been a CC knockoff...
Looking at it one way not really a knockoff or another way Chromium Crusher is also a knockoff. Most grinders that don't cost an arm and a leg aren't really 'brands' in the same way as the pricy ones like SCS, Space Case, Mendo, etc. There are a bunch of different name brands (several ending in 'crusher') that come and go. They're all mostly made in the same factory, on the same CNC machines. A slight change here or there and you have a different brand (or so they'd like you to think), but they're all pretty much the same. If it's a Smart Crusher it's just as legit as a Chromium Crusher, Cali Crusher, etc.

Is the mini a 2 piece or 4 piece? It seems that there are consistent reports of the mini 2 piece grinding finer than the larger sizes. I wonder, however, if this might be due to people filling it more than with the larger ones.

Reports on the mini 4 piece seem to be more inconsistent. Some report that it grinds finer than the larger ones, while others report that the holes let material through before it is ground enough. You would think that turning the grinder sideways would solve this problem though.

Personally, I would prefer a grinder that produces a courser grind while being as consistent as possible. A fine grind is great for killing the load quickly but unfortunately it kills the flavour even quicker. I also find that the finer the grind the more the taste turns bitter after the first pull, long before the flavour is gone. In contrast, the more intact the flowers are, the sweeter the flavour as it wanes. This is particularly evident in the Lotus, which maintains the sweetest flavour profile of the vapes I have used.

I'm hand crumbling my flowers for the lotus right now, but they are very airy sativa buds. This doesn't work so well for more dense material though, partly because chunks make stirring a pain in the arse, and partly because larger chunks can get a bit too toasted on the outside before being vaped through.

What do people think is the best 3 or 4 piece to produce a very consistent but not too fine grind?

I'm thinking SCS small or mini. The mini would be all I need for size as the most I chop at a time is one thermovape T1 bowl at a time. I would get the small if it was better at producing the grind I'm after though.

Does SCS sound like the best option for me, or are there other brands that are better for my requirements?

Hey Hey
@Tom Funk , my small 2 piece gives me a finer grind(slightly) than my large 4 piece.

I use my 4 piece more, because it fits to my hand nicer and I personally like the kief separation it provides.

My hands are rather small for a bloke and I think that I'd find that anything smaller than the small size would be cramp worthy. I imagine the 3 piece would have the same quality of grind as the 4 piece because of the holes.

IMHO the small 2 piece SCS is the best bang for buck high end grinder you can get:nod:

The SCS Mini is not only smaller in diameter, it's thinner with less to grip (hard on the hands)... and has smaller teeth. I only recommend the mini for travel or if you need an extra fine grind. It will shred coarse with less work if that's what you need, but it is better at fine shredding than the other SCS sizes.

I agree with the Clown and I believe that is the best option for you.

The sound of vapor
I'm really wondering why there isn't much interest for the cali crusher homegrown, it sure looks good and well designed, I like those "loading bays" and also the fact that there's a lifetime warranty, plus the coarse or fine grind depending on which way you turn it got me curious.
I wish they were available in Europe. I almost went for one despite the price + shipping costs, then saw they'd "soon" release a small one, let's hope it's a 3 pieces one as I don't care much about the kief screen (which is replaceable for those who care).

Any one experienced those?

I gave my initial impressions of the 2pc homegrown here.

It looks like the bottom tray on the 4pc is deep enough you could use the 4 as a 3pc no problem.

I'm still having a little trouble deciding between the Mendo and the SCS (probably going to get a 2-piece model, and then start looking at those kief boxes, I liked the Zombie brand, but it would be nice to also find some decent alternative too to compare).

Anyone own a Mendo and an SCS and have any opinions?

I actually prefer the grip on the Mendo, but it truly is moot because the SCS turned much easier for me; it is effortless.

Is there any manufacturer that makes a steel grinder similar to the storz&bickel plastic orange 2 piece? I love the grind consistency but even after just a few days i've noticed the points breaking off and after a short ISO soak the clear plastic lid basically melted to the grinder and the orange turned white-ish all over. I assume a 2 piece SCS would be the next best thing?

Hi, guys!
I've been lurking around FC for a few weeks, and you guys completely sold me on getting a Solo.
Now you've convinced me to get either a small 4-piece SCS or a large. Vapor Clown and Tom Funk seem to endorse the small. Does anyone think the large has any advantages, besides the sheer amount it can handle?
By the way, I'm getting the "Rasta" colors, just to really show off to my friends.
