PBW & the Chemistry of Clean

ok thanks T-dub will do right now...how long leave in freezer i wonder...
Not sure, this is a procedure that Vitolo used once. I think the freezing helped to "snag" everything and help it out. So I would guess say 30 minutes and give it a try? You can always do more if needed. Bleach might help also, if you have it.

Interesting idea about freezing. I've read (And tried) putting shoes in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight to kill odors (seems to help!)

Also I knew a guy that would cryo-clean organic mater with basically a pressure-washer connected to a dry-ice machine blowing out extremely cold CO2 - they used it to clean barnacles off navy ships and to remove all smoke damage from fire within a house. Something about the cold kills the organic material and it falls off the surface (no scrubbing needed).

Of course a home freezer would never get that cold, I can't hurt!
(Just be careful not to change the temperature too fast on the glass, otherwise you risk shattering the piece!)

PBW & sport water bottles?
My sports water bottles are horrible to clean. I drink 100% juices, diluted down to 80% water and 20% juice. With all that sugar, the grooves, threads, corners get this black gunk that's really hard to remove.
These are some type of plastic.
Will PBW work on them without harming the plastic?
Soak overnight and rinse??
Thanks

Excellent idea! I'm gonna try that. Says it's safe for plastic, but I read it can "remove plasticizers". Only a 15 min. or so should do it. If it wrecks the bottle, no huge loss.

This has to have been asked but I don't see it in a search... Has anyone tried oxyclean mixed with baking soda? Google it... Someone on Amazon said that's all one of the PBW knockoff's was, so it made me wonder?

I left a tube soaking over night filled with pbw and now it has a ring at the top of the neck where it was filled to.

How do you remove pbw stains?

I tired putting it in a cup of pbw water upside down and it helped a little but then left a similar stain at the top of the water level in the cup

I believe you need to do 5-10 new PBW rinses - but use HOT water for every step, and use less pbw - half to a third of what you use normally (more rinses with shorter soaking times is better than one heavy concentration soak for a long time)

This has happened to me also. my workaround is to use stoppers to get the water level as high as possible with no air pockets. With the water level at the very top, it'll leave a small ring that's easily removed with ss wool. It's easy on a tube. With small-diameter mouthpieces it's more difficult but can be done. Just make sure there's no air pockets that will lower the water level.

Edit: Merged.

I've found another application for PBW that has given me back hours of my life.

I'm playing with glass fusing at the moment, and the vitresous glass pieces are mounted on mesh for shipping with this thick glue. Even soaking in water loosens it only a little, and many many minutes go by as I have to take a stiff brush to each glass piece. There's little bits of adhesive falling on the table, on the floor.A mess.

Last night I tried adding some PBW to the water soak, and sure enough, today the glue just fell off the glass. Didn't have to pick a single piece off. Cool. More time for learning glass, and vaping.

So i finally learned about PBW today the embarrassing way.
Does anybody find it to be a skin irritant?
I was planning on using gloves but figure some of you probably get it on your skin and aren't bothered by it?

If it freaks you out just use BAKING SODA and WHITE VINEGAR to clean or ISO and SALT.

I like PWB because it makes the glass sparkle!

Use what you feel comfortable with!

No, I get it on my skin quite often, and just rinse it off. No problems noted.

On a side note, I used it on a water bottle, which can get funky and is hard to totally clean inside. Works great!

I use rubber gloves, but not because it's a skin irritant, rather I wear them because glass gets very slippery with PBW and the gloves help me keep a firm hold when handling my glass during cleaning.

^^^ This ^^^ AND always use proper safety equipment. High concentrations of PBW are alkaline and for people with sensitive skin, like me, it will fuck up your hands. If you're not wearing glasses and you are using this stuff hot, under pressure, you are taking a risk. Remember, safety is no accident.

I tend to use one glove though to protect from hot water, chemical, and provide wet grip, but use my right bare hand, or covered in microfiber cloth, to do more tactile things, use a sponge, or dry and polish.

Thanks you guys for the last couple posts. I have sensitive skin and didn't want to wait to see how I might react to it.

I will get a small amount and use it carefully. I look forward to my glass sparkling again, and excited to give up on iso :)

I've so far used my PBW to clean my friend's disgusting bong (cleaned it SPOTLESS), all of our oven baking dishes and pans (baked on grease and grime went from black and sticky to shiny silver, and i've cleaned the shower, bath and sinks with it which gave them a brand new sparkle and theres still a fuck-ton of it left!

Will PBW effect the black 'heat-proof' grip on the Arizer EQ cyclone bowl?

Tossed my large 4pc SantaCruz Shredder in a container I was cleaning, sprinkled a bit of PBW in, and bam!
The spot the sprinkles were on the metal stripped the gunmetal finish right off! Makes me wonder a bit about the finish they put on those things?

Hotish water, soak time around 10 mins...

Beware! :bang:

sorry to hear but thanks for the warning. Do you think it only happened where a sprinkle directly hit the finish? In other words, would it happen if PBW was totally dissolved in hot water in the container and
THEN the SCS was added so no PBW pieces contacted the finish???

Yes, or at least substantially accelerated. This was quite apparant.

Unknown and I can only speculate that it would affect it at a greatly reduced pace that you would likely not notice, as this is the usual method I use. This time I scooped a little in before the water on top of the pieces rather than introducing the pieces later. Some of the powder chunks looked like they didn't dissolve. Oh, they dissolved alright - right into the finish of the grinder. I don't trust it now not to flake, and it also really got the flat area on the bottom piece for collecting kief - don't think scraping or even brushing of any kind would be a good idea, so off in the trash it goes
