I do agree with @mewash2 in the selection of which chamber for your thick co2 oil.
I take a different approach however as to the orientation of the pen.
I always keep my VIPs aiming to the sky, and I leave the coil immersed.
If there is some clog, I go ahead and heat/draw/heat/draw to unstick it.
I do take a couple of precautions for the mentioned concerns.
Before putting the pen away, I inhale a number of lengthy breaths through the pen to open the bottom ports and to thicken the oil through cool air.
If it gets badly clogged, I use thumb, index, and middle finger of one hand to seal 3 of the vents, while I pop the other free using heat... then I go around, and remove other hole cover while 3 are still covered... until all 4 run free.
A concern with laying the pen down, with oils, is that in summer's unstable temperatures, the oils will soften, and could find it's way into the bottom-most vent... with no actual stopper on the other exposed vents.. which allows a leak (test this with drinking straw full of water... hold finger on top water stays, remove finger water escapes).
Rather than allow one hole to plug alone, I allow pen to stand so that all 4 vents fill and seal at same level, and oil freezes in that position, and won't seep into the chamber's "inner sanctum"
For that there is a cost....
I must heat and clear the unit as I am taking my next hit. Not an issue... and it keeps all ports breathing uniformly.
There is no right or wrong here....
There is only discovery of which inconveniences in maintaining unit you are more prepared to deal with... and your own preferred coping mechanisms!
