A few guys were just discussing it in the cheap glass thread...

Man I busted off the mouthpiece on my Bio beaker. Oh well. Mushroom at the end of the mouthpiece was a little too penis looking for my taste. Wanted to turn what was left of the beaker into a dabber stand, but it was too ragged and ended in the recycle bin. Which reminds me, can pieces of worked glass go in the recycling bin?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to put it in there it'll all melt back down. It's not like they can't take colored beer bottles you know?

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way in which to impede the growth of a hairline crack in a glass water piece. For what it's worth it was purchased at a local head shop for a small sum so the value it holds is more nostalgic than anything. I have been wary to use it for fear that I will place it down on my desk too roughly and have it explode in my hands. I wasn't too worried about that until it started to form the X pattern you see below.

My question is twofold:
I: Is there any way to prevent this from shattering completely?
II: What is the likelihood of a hairline fracture like this turning into a complete shatter?

If these things crack like car windshields then I think that one is gonna "run" until it falls apart, which I think it will because its not "safety glass" obviously. As far as repair goes I'm not a glass guy so I can't answer if a flame or kiln would help that or not.

Is spreading jbweld everywhere and wrapping the whole thing up in duct tape an option?

Sorry, I had a piece with a crack I kept at bay with Loctite Liquid Glass. But I caught it early and it wasn't near as developed as yours is.

Thanks a bunch. I looked into it, and it is at least as expensive for a tube as the piece cost me in the first place. I would rather just replace it and shelf this one if it comes to that.

I am seriously considering some sort of half-assed solution like this. The tube which accepts the downstem has already been Super Glued back into place (and may have been the source of the crack). I was thinking perhaps something more elegant than duct tape but I might just use something like JB Weld on the crack and then try to melt some plastic to form around the base. That way if it did explode the casualties should be minimal.

I have no clue if this would work here n00b when it comes to this stuff.

I recently bought a y-adapter off ebay and it arrived chipped. They sent me a new one but I wanted to test out flame polishing the chips.

Took a propane torch that I use for soldering 0awg welding wire:

I slowly heated it up making sure to not leave the touch on for too long and keeping a distance. As it heated up I increased duration. The chips definitely became smoother.

But not super smooth, since this was an extra I said who cares ill just try again.

Was not patient enough and it started cracking! I immediately adjusted my technique, letting it cool and heating very slowly. After awhile the crack disappeared.

I keep forgetting to post this. My friends failed to complete a hand off and broke my D020-W-2 about a month ago. It was a very nice piece and I highly recommend it. I ordered a replacement with blue base and mouthpiece but it is ever so slightly different and I don't like it near as much. I plan on ordering another one exactly the same as what I broke. Should have just done that the first time.

So This piece is not technically broken as the glass is not broken but it is no longer functional because of a un-replaceable grommet .I searched all around to find one to replace it . Well I could of had 10,000 made but that seemed a bit excessive ( I posted about it a while ago but could not make anything work http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/old-school-grommets.14370/ )

I have had the piece for at lest 15 years and was used every day for years .
Its been it the closet now for a long long time and I think is time to go .
So I l know not technically broken but I though it deserved a memorial somewhere .

And yeah that dirt is really old !

Is this the kind of grommet you are looking for?

Maybe you could try a piece of surgical tubing. You know the stretchy kind like on a wrist rocket. A friend had an old Graphix that he was able to fix this way.
Edit: and some PBW!:)

Unfortunately I don't think I would use it anyway now .

Swap out the stem for a diffused stem with a Gong fitting and you have new life for an old friend. Oregonglassblower on Ioffer.com hooked me up with the stem and a grommet.

I know you're offering to give it away for free in the classifieds currently......

But ya know......That looks totally like something I could fix with my 3D printed plastic molds. I basically design a 3D model of a part, then run it through a program which generates two negative halves in a square mold.

I could easily make a replacement similar to your original grommet out of RTV Silicon (Well, silicon and corn-starch mixed thoroughly). That is assuming you still have the original grommet.

If Silicon isn't strong enough, I do have a special Thermoplastic-elastomer filament (plastic rubber) which should work

PM me if you're interested in fixing it for sentimental reasons, I would only need the original grommet if you have it.
