Oh, is that why the last thread got sacked?

BTW, this is true. I was incorrect in that statement. I meant to say 3. ;)

In reference to the recent missing airplane, I did hear reports that the aircraft did ask to divert its course do to weather. This was right before contact was lost. Also, the FAA issues a warning that there were militants with Weapons capable of bringing down an aircraft in Mali. Hopefully some facts will come to light soon.

They can probably get legislation passed as well. All I'm saying is, they talk about what a great country it is, the greatest democracy, but can't accomplish shit. Oh, they want to do that? We don't agree. Stalemate.

I digress. Imho, it's all run by corporations anyway.

This could get interesting, there's an untested "nuclear option" called Senate Resolution 400 and the top senate democrats are actually considering using it against obama. And his best strategy might be to have them do it, if he doesn't want to go up against the cia. It's actually a well-written and accessible article.

On the torture report, a confrontation looms

President Barack Obama addresses intelligence personnel at C.I.A headquarters in Langley, VA, USA on May 20, …

Sometime this summer, probably when as many Americans as possible are tanning on a beach and not paying attention, the White House is expected to release a version of a classified report on torture during the Bush years. Actually, what's likely to become public is only the executive summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee's report; the entire thing, five years in the making, clocks in at about 6,700 pages, making it the most exhaustive account yet of what really went on in secret CIA prisons around the world.

President Obama has repeatedly said he favors declassifying the report, which the public really ought to see. And should he release the summary in something close to the form in which it was sent to him, then his decision will likely end an unusually public standoff between top senators and the CIA, each of whom accused the other of spying illegally as the report was being compiled and written.

If, on the other hand, Obama delays the release much longer, or bows to the intelligence community and decides to black out the report's most damaging findings, then we may find ourselves on the brink of a serious escalation between the legislative and executive branches in Washington — a war over what kind of secrets the government should be allowed to keep and, more to the point, who gets to decide.

The doomsday device in this fight, which the Senate has rolled out a few times in the past but has never actually used, is an arcane, almost 40-year-old provision known as Senate Resolution 400.

So strange to read about the crashed plane trying to go around the world here on FC. I got a call a few hours later from my mother, I guess the guy was a childhood friend of my father. Small world, huh?

:worms: Crohnie, you're taking a big risk opening up this topic again. You really think that two days is enough of a cool down period?

Guess you have a lot of faith that the same situation that happened before in the News Thread won't happen again here. I sure hope you're right 'cause I'd really hate to see this thread shut down again or members banned because they find it irresistible to keep their passions in check on this.

As Iraq unraveled in sectarian and religious violence, the neoconservatives who visited this political and humanitarian nightmare on America quickly took to the news shows and opinion pages to lay all the blame on the guy stuck with cleaning up the mess they alone created. And, of course, they have drawn support from the usual right-wing op-ed water-carriers. Like this guy.

Does this “coalition of the galling” actually think that anyone other than a blinkered partisan would for one moment buy their arguments?

At least the guy nominally in charge of the White House during those years has kept his yap shut regarding Iraq.

Its almost like members want this thread to be closed... Couldn't agree with Iwien more.

As for the situation in Iraq, it's such a tragedy. This could have been avoided if we didn't support Saddam from the start. Funny thing is that it was Regan and then HW who helped prop Saddam up when he was carrying out some of his most ruthless policies.

Bill Maher tells America: Like a bad ex-boyfriend, Iraq is never going to change
DAVID FERGUSON SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 2014 10:45 EDT

In his weekly “New Rules” segment, Real Time host Bill Maher did his best this week to convince Americans that Iraq is just not that into us.

Earlier in the show, he implored President Barack Obama to keep the U.S. out of Iraq’s civil war, a message that he underscored in the show’s final segment.

“Broken nations are a lot like broken people,” said Maher. “You can’t fix them.”

Amid all the calls for American forces to intervene in conflicts
