Thanks, guys. I have had a few times where the lid is askew, but that's not what's happening when I'm combusting. It's usually on a long draw after a preheat of another 8 seconds. It takes 5-6 seconds before mine glows. I'm using hand pinched herb and I've tried both loosely packed and tightly packed bowls. I got great vapor on my first night, but I'm just not getting hits like that. I can draw for a shorter length of time, but I'm still not getting any vapor either way. Well, I'm getting small hits, but nothing like the first night. I've also tried grinding the herb and I only tried a top screen after things were combusting. I definitely feel that at best the unit is inconsistent. I had such an easy time on Friday night only for the thing to give me trouble all day yesterday.

Anyway, I appreciate the suggestions. Thank you.

My two cents is that much of this depends on dryness of herb and grind.

Most of us don't have access to massive amounts of one strain. If we did I'm betting we'd get more consistency.

Where I started understanding this device is when I committed it to a 1/2 ounce of one strain, hand torn.

If and when I've tried fluffier bud or less dry herb I've compensated with using the pre heat as a slight herb "dryer" to great success!

Yeah, that is one difference from Friday's successes. The bud is different. I do the preheat, but it doesn't do much for me.

I find it contradictory myself - why do I get almost no vapor and then suddenly combustion?

I had the same exact problem at first making me not overly thrilled with the unit. Today I believe those variables to be dryness of herb, hand torn grind, draw speed.

All I can say is that thinking of this unit as a musical instrument over say a mechanical clock has helped me "master" this device. I had to rethink and realign my expectations for this unit. It has not been as straightforward as I expected, but rewarding nonetheless!

Wait first it was too hot, now it's not hot enough?

Yeah, like Grokit, I'm now a bit confused. I thought you were having combustion issues...if so, you should have large hits because your unit is operating too hot. Your last post sounds like more typical learning curve/elusive vapor issues.

For the latter, my approach is: little to no grind...pack the bowl very densely..pre heat four seconds....pull as fast as you can until you feel resistance, and no faster (i.e. faster than a normal convection vape, but slower than a pipe...let the FF's natural resistance guide you)...keep drawing for several seconds after you release the button. Keep taking hits while the unit is warmed up, ie don't let it cool down so you leverage the thermal mass you create as the FF gets hotter.

Practice practice practice. If your device does indeed get hot enough to combust (which to be clear it shouldn't), you should be able to pull massive hits.

But, if your main issue is uncontrolled combustion, you may need to send it back for replacement. Can you clarify what your exact issue is...hits are too small, or combusting wildly?

Working right now on the same bud from Friday. I also just did a very thorough cleaning. If the bud is too sticky/moist, the I get almost no vapor until it combusts. Do you guys air or dry out your bud? Seems counterintuitive to me.

Well, this bowl was pulling vapor fine and now it just combusted again. This was just after a stir. Sorry, but if a 10 second pull results in combustion, then something has to be wrong. I've combusted this thing probably 7 or 8 times since yesterday. Getting kinda frustrated. Should not be this easy to torch your weed and if it is, then this is not the vape for me.

Solod out.
I'm actually getting more ripped on the firefly than I used to on the solo. I'm not sure if its because my tolerance is lower, but the high is sneaky.
I agree with the poster who said it brings out the munchies.

I've had four FFs. One combusted on day one and was faulty. Two have never come close to combustion and seem to work as designed. The fourth worked fine for three months, then began combusting quite suddenly and randomly. When FF service checked it out, they determined the heating coil was mis-aligned. They sent me a brand new one.

If you are experiencing true combustion, i.e. flash, smoke, room has a burning smell, smoke pours out when you lift the lid, burned taste permeates the device until cleaned (as opposed to say occasional charring, which isn't combustion per se) then I would advise you to contact FF and send the unit back. No matter how wet or dry your material is, a properly functioning FF is, overall, a low-ish temp vape and won't combust unless the coil is out of whack...that is, sitting in a position that creates much higher temps than the 400 F target.

The FF may or may not be the vape for you, but it's not prone to combustion when functioning properly. Give them a call tomorrow AM and you will be, if nothing else, really pleased at how hard they work to make you a happy customer.

Let us know what happens please!

They should make the glass window like an actual close and shut window. Would make stirring easier.

cawshook,
Is there any meaningful difference between ordering from Firefly directly or Vapeworld? Do they both ship from Seattle? Vapeworld orders typically arrive in two days for me (Las Vegas warehouse to SoCal).

Tried to post a pic using an image url of the Pelican 1170 I customized for the Firefly and Pax. Then tried to delete the whole thing when it didn't appear as a picture and couldn't figure out how to do that. I'll go back to doing what I know how to do.

Okay. I made it my avatar instead. The Pax doesn't show up unless you click on it. But thanks to the poster who originally suggested the Pelican 1170.

Here's a link that might help: How to post pictures.

When posting images from ImageShack, you can either select the Direct link and use the Image button here, or select the Forum link and paste it directly into your post. The mistake you made (and this is a common error) is to select the Forum link and then use the Image button here. That results in a double set of IMG tags and a broken image link. The only purpose of the Image button is to add IMG tags, but the Forum link at ImageShack already has IMG tags.

So my friend who uses a rig/nail/dabs came over to try the FF with the Herbalizer Aroma Pads where I put Fire Og shatter on.

We leaned on the button for about 4, 10 seconds pulses. Saw the shatter bubble a bit and melt down. 2-3 more, 10 second pulses and draw slowly as lungs begin to feel and bam 2 huge rips/clouds!

Friends Verdict: As good as rig/nail. Worked perfectly with flavor, potency, etc. and no residue in chamber.

People this thing has now surpassed any portable unit I'm aware of. It can be used perfectly with concentrates!!!

I think of the Firefly as being similar to a trumpet. Hand it to anyone, and everyone will be able to figure out which end to blow into. However, it takes a bit of practice to produce recognizable "music "(vapor). In order to produce a "melody", you must consider the character of the grind, the moisture level of the herb, and finally, you need to decide what "style" of "music" you are trying to achieve. Preheating ? Button press duration during draw ? Character of draw ? These are all nuances of playing the Firefly. Individual preferences vary. Practice makes perfect !

Another fine example that "stoners" are not inherently dumb. If anything, I see an uncanny ability to see associations, metaphors, similes, etc. I am proud to be amoung your number folks!

Don't think it makes a difference. Vapeworld is, I think, the only authorized seller apart from FF themselves. I know when FF ships they have warehouses on both coasts, and east coast customers get shipments from Florida.

FF ships pretty fast. You might get it from them as fast as Vapeworld.

In case anyone was wondering what I mean by hand torn, loosely packed and overflowing the bowl. This is what has given me thee best results to date.*

2 huge puff/clouds later

From here I will finger grind this down to expose more surface area....

Then
2 more huge puffs/clouds....

I'd get 2 more puffs clouds from here and for me it's spent/cashed after that.

I feel like I would like my Firefly a lot more if I didn't have to charge it every single day, especially since I only go through 1 or 2 small bowls before it dies.

I purchased an extra battery and charger. I have to agree, it's a part-time job keeping the Firefly charged. Perhaps I'm partly at fault for using it too much, but it tastes so good. Luckily, the spent battery is charged before the charged battery dies, so I'm never without my Firefly.

Talk about fast shipping - my Firefly arrived at my local FedEx office 24 hours after I placed the order. It shipped from the same Nevada location as my past orders from Vapeworld. Firefly must be working closely with them on the distribution side of things.

My unit will be waiting for me when I return from a trip tomorrow evening. Can't wait to use it!
