Oh so it doesn't have a true idle mode? Setting one is as low as it goes?

Not sure if your looking at it after a few mins. of cool down? if its a cold unit and you turn it on, it should only be the blue light and from there you can raise temp setting. #1 light should not be illuminated I believe if unit is completely cold. others may chine in. Just checked both of mine older and newer both when 1st turned on show idle light only.

No, fatal as in shorting the battery to the exposed PCB will no doubt kill the PCB..........

No, I'm absolutely saying not to connect red to black, just the opposite...... "Watch the wire colors (Solo polarity on the connector is 'backwards') but if you do you should be fine." I meant to say exactly what I did. I'm amazed you got away with reverse connecting the battery, most reckless IMO. The (JST) connector used by Arizer is fairly common (I bought mine with pigtails from a supplier for R/C Helicopters and such), the industry standard polarity for the connectors is backwards to what Arizer did for whatever reason. If you were to match colors on the battery when you went to plug it in to the lead from the PCB it would be red to black at the connector.......something you'd likely miss if you were concentrating on plugging the connectors together. If you match the colors you'll be fine, just check. Under no conditions cross connect such things.....ever.

"Watch the wire colors (Solo polarity on the connector is 'backwards') but if you do you should be fine."

Good luck with the pack. How does the capacity compare with the factory one? How many 'no stem step 7 sessions' per charge?

TIA

Don't know when I'd have time to test without using it. But this is the usage I've gotten from it with the first full charge:

P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }
First charge: 2.5-3hrs

First run starting at #6 increasing to #7

Second run 5-7

Third 7

4th 5-7

5th 7

6th 4

7th 4-5

8th 5-7

9th 4-- Charge light came on about 6mins in.
Each session went the full 12minutes. The fourth and fifth session were back-to-back, if that matters.
The batter appears to be the exact same as the original but with different wires and connector. The only thing different on the marking is that it does not say "BFN." I believe that was the first 3 letters of the original battery.

I just ordered the Portable Arizer Solo. It should be here in 2 days. I'm pretty excited. I have this stupid little pen thing that does not work well (had one good experience that I think was aided by edibles). I have wanted a vaporizer since visiting the lounges in Toronto (2007). I hadn't smoked any appreciable quantity for maybe 20 years because I hated ingesting that raw harsh smoke. When I tried the vape it was an enlightenment. This is the way to go! I read some where that older people can't adjust. Totally untrue in my case. I was set to buy a volcano but found the price at the time daunting. Since returning from Denver, after being exposed to the sublime variety, quality, potency, ease of all the herb and products, I am BACK. I use mj primarily for sleep, creativity and spiritual insight. The stuff we got in Colorado has blown me away. It seems best now to maximize it now through vapor over combustion. Can't wait to pick up my mail on thursday....

the plastic composition used in the molds of the base plates is more brittle than previously-used plastics, making the newer Solos more susceptible to cracking.

Although my Solo devices have never been dropped or abused in any way, nor have I ever tried to squeeze in O-rings below the cap, I too found the baseplates on both of my Solos having cracks around the four screws. I can assure you that I am extremely gentle with my devices.

Here are a couple of pics taken through my 10x jeweler's loupe of my newest Solo (only a few months old), showing cracks around the screws:

So I went to my local Ace Hardware store and bought the following:
- Panhead Machine Screw, 2mm x 8mm, p/n 4306, 25 cents each.
- Flat Washer, 2mm, p/n 4298, 17 cents each.

The new screws and washers help alleviate some of the stress that was induced by the original screws. The new screws went in nice and snug with little effort.

I agree. I also believe the problem is the plastic used. I had cracking before I ever used an "O" ring.
The oldest units did not generally have this problem. This unit works so well, I refuse to send it in unless something else happens:

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like your Solo seems pretty normal. My newer model Solo is about 6 weeks old. It takes about 1 1/2 hours for mine to charge up. I get about 7 to 8 - 12 min sessions. That would be using heat level 4 and 5.

The Solo is a fantastic little device. I own 2 of them, the older and the newer model. Im going on a little trip and will be taking both of them. I may try the Solo in the cup trick. I have not been able to get the stealth adapter, they've been sold out at Planetvape.

Vanvas, The o-ring that's placed over the heater and the top screws back on over it puts extra stress on the bottom plate, it's believed. I don't have a o-ring on mine and I have a little cracking going on.

IMO. I think it might be different plastic than the older models. Or possibly a bad batch of plastic. I didn't notice any chipping until a week ago.

Cool, sounds 'about normal'. Maybe.

As I said before, I don't think you can make a very accurate measure while using it. It's easy to see, check the "duty cycle" (time the heat's on to off) with the original system. The new system, which doesn't really coast at zero power, is not so easy to see, you have to measure it IMO. At higher levels it's pretty easy to go to 1/2 the 'open top' number buy just plugging a packed stem in and blocking the hot air escape. Likewise, you can double the power used (or nearly so) hitting it aggressively.

But 8 sessions is probably about right???

One thing, though, you should not be discharging it until the charge LED comes on........unless you want to prematurely kill off your battery and go again? Best advice is to not 'run it off the bottom', and for sure never go until it locks out.

Regards.

Thanks!

Normally there is no contact with the oven so screwing the cap on does not press down on the Solo Chassis. The ring changes that. The screw threads on the cap have considerable 'mechanical advantage' (that is to say they're powerful, like the screw on a vice is) and can put a surprising amount of force down against the tabs that were never designed to do more than keep the chassis from falling back out.

If the ring is more than 'just snug' (and maybe even then in some cases?) trouble can pop up the next time it's heated. Or the time after even. The idea is to grip the stem with the ring 'barefoot' and then hold the ring from rotating (gently). Not to compress the ring at all, especially to 'tighten it up', that's not how it's supposed to work.

Yes it matters , because if you heat up your Solo from a cold start .
It'll take more battery power to heat up . Your 4th and 5th session didn't require as much power to re-heat .

I like to gauge my portable battery life with straight usage , as in back
to back to back . On the same level ideally . Since I like the taste of dry
vaping on level 3 in my new solo , I can start the weekend off dry vaping for a couple of hours on portable battery only . Turning the vape back on immediately when it auto shuts off . And do the same at night time water
vaping on level 7 exclusively .

I found my older Solo had better portable life . And this was my test .

Monday to Friday , I would begin the day plugged to the PA for the
1st hour before leaving for work . Trying to reserve as much battery
power for the rest of the day . As I'm not near a power source . The old
one lasted til I got home . The new one does not , It usually starts to
display the charge light way before I reach home . And I'm doing the
same vaping routine at work on my breaks .

@Pipes , Don't throw out your PA parts , just yet . I still think there
could be a demand for the PA .

Can anyone refer me to the posts regarding usage and charging at the same time and its effect on battery? Was it @OF that made some posts? Just wanna know if it's better to just use the battery and then charge, because I am near a power source.

I will be a "control". I have a 3 month old unit and have never used it while charging, I've also never let any material touch the stainless bowl.
I'm happy to be a "non-control" or whatever the opposite is in this metaphor. I've got a new 2014 Solo that's an M1T etc. I've used the vaping and charging thing but usually I just charge it and vape it nearly dead again before charging. I HAVE however used it several times while plugged in. No difference except I hate the plug, so I stopped doing it. No difference in how the Solo operates, tho.

And I have managed to mar the bottom of my chamber. I embedded a small ball of hash or oil or something in a stemful, and it leaked out into the chamber. It wasnt near the holed, nor did it change the vaping. It just didn't look good.

So while my Solo works perfectly well, and I'm not unhappy with anything except the number of stems I've gone through (got a wood one, hate it). No probs on batteries, although I might have had, without what I've read here!

You are correct. It had not cooled down. When the heater is cold only the blue idle light is on. :)

Please forgive my ignorance. I'm having trouble grasping the ring fix. If you put the Oring in and it puts extra pressure on the screws at the base. Won't that in itself cause cracking of the (IMHO cheap) plastic?

Yes, that is exactly the point.

While everyone gets an opinion, I see absolutely nothing to support the idea that the plastic used is "cheap" or substandard. Nothing else about the Solo fits that pattern? IMO it's a great example of excellent engineering......and their sales volume reflects that. Solo has a solid, IMO well earned, reputation.

I agree that the solo is a solid engineered vape. I'm done buying vaped that don't live up to the hype. My nature is to always buy the best. That is why I choose the Solo. I just can't understand why so many have cracked plastic. Those who have never used the O ring and those that have are experiencing the cracking. Many have stated they treat them very gently and never have dropped them, yet the cracks continue.

So my new Solo is my favorite vape. It's really very nice. Oh and the flavor is outstanding.

Yes, I believe @OF may have stated so in earlier threads. I took an o-ring and a dremel I have and shaved some of it off and it has worked well for me, might be a bit for some to perform, but if my old arthritic hands can do it most here if they take their time can do it that have access to the tool.

Wow! What a cool idea! I bet it beats my scheme of sanding it down all hollow? What sort of cutter did you use? A steel burr? How did you hold the ring? I usually stick the ring to Gorilla Tape (heavy duct tape) to hold on to sand it down......I'm thinking you could just lay it flat and take passes at the upper (exposed) side?

Great suggestion, please clue me into the cutter you used, I want to give it a try.

TIA

Hey, is this a great place or what?

Good point, but I'm not sure the major factor is we're looking for trouble? I mean before I started messing with this good stuff I don't recall anyone posting about cracked tabs? My guess is it was pretty rare and not really a fatal sort of issue for most even after they found it?

I'm sure I'm not the only guy that's read this thread from the start and I didn't recall anyone posting before I brought it up a year or so back?

The net has a way of distorting stuff, maybe we're looking an another instance?
