Mainstream opinion on vaporization

Seren

Away with the fairies
My vaping is on AC and plastic, plastic, plastic to the lips. The experience isn't zen, it's medical and I feel medicated.

I have this compulsion to clean the house and eat. Neither were such a priority yesterday.

Haha .... come visit my house any time you like - I'll provide the herb and a feather duster! ;)

As others have suggested, as you build up your vaporizer arsenal you may find you prefer an all glass pathway, or perhaps a vaporizer which offers wooden stems as an option. I really love how clean the vapour tastes through both of these mediums, especially glass.

Enjoy your journey in the world of vaping :peace:

Something that I have noticed about vaporizing, living in Seattle, is that popular opinion on it isn't very high. I work at a pizza place with 50+ employees and have talked to most of them about vaporizing.

"I used to vaporize for awhile but then it stopped getting me high so I switched back to smoking"

"I think its sort of a fad/gimmick, nothing compares to a good bong rip"

"I tried my friend's Volcano once, it was okay"

These were the average opinions on the subject. There's also a fair number of people who haven't really tried it more than a couple of times. Probably 4 out of the 50 people own a respectable vaporizer, and I'm not sure if anyone there actually vaporizes on a regular basis (such as I) as opposed to smoking. Most people are mostly aware of 'the Volcano' and many think it's the only vaporizer worth buying.

Older people are more likely to look down on vaporization too. Of the handful I talked to (who were 35+), they all appear to be unaware of it, or aware of it but completely belittling of it. For some people, the idea of smoking and marijuana are completely intertwined and inseparable. My dad, for example, won't even take a dab of hash if offered to him. He just says "it does nothing for me, and it irritates my throat" - and then goes off to take a bong rip from his bong that hasn't been cleaned since he purchased it years ago and continues to disgustingly hack his lungs out.

Despite the benefits of vaporization being significant and blatant, I feel like people in general don't want to change. I have a theory: whatever that is more instantly gratifying is to be more popular. Food, music, smoking, whatever it is - people want instant gratification. The "buy-in" price for a decent vaporizer is too much a leap of faith for some people - or the benefits just don't seem worthwhile, even to people who use marijuana on a daily basis. Whenever I explain the concept of 'efficiency' and 'getting significantly more for your money', I get the impression that the idea goes over their head or they believe I'm exaggerating the benefits.

What are the popular opinions on vaporizing where you live?

I Think vaping can do the trick if you use it for extracts like with a pen. Otherwise it is very hard to get the high you are a custom to or desire. Vaporizing weed is a appetizer but I am sure it is better for you than smoking a fatty ( http://blog.sfgate.com/smellthetruth/2013/11/14/vaporization-vs-combustion-which-is-safer/ ) but who was ever In it for the health factor anyway?

I don't think that I've ever read a post with multiple statements where I've disagreed with just about every last one of them.

And specifically, in answer to your last question...........just about everyone here.

i wonder how much pax paid for such a blatant advertising article :) of course they would mention the iolite and show pictures of the da vinci. both are pretty bulky, so the pax can shine with it small size. the volcano. well, haven't seen a piece on vaporizing without mentioning the volcano, yet. the both pens featured also seem alibi choices. given the bad rep of the atmos and lacking reviews on the snoop dog pen, not the best ones. but it's nice to read that vaping gets some recognition.

Yeah, clearly that article was a well made attempt to promote the PAX in comparison to other popular vapes in the mainstream, with an emphasys on conduction as it's main extraction process.

That's the way it goes... to me it's all fair game in the business but for the regular joe it is very misleading.

I have the same type of discussions in other forums where people mainly combust and they always go for the worst vaporizers IMO, which usually are the ones with better marketing tactics.

66yo from western Mass. here. Been smoking joints and bowls since the summer of 1967. My Arizer Solo arrived yesterday, and I love it! I was sold on the fact that it would conserve on the amount of herb I consume and the health benefits (I have an annoying cough). Since I am older and don't have a reliable connection (you kids don't realize how difficult it can be for us older tokers, I mean, vapers, lol), I have to make every gram go as far as possible. The Solo was easy to use (once I figured out how to get the glass stem to fit), and the high did seem cleaner. I always test herb on my wife (she is 65)--she took 3 hits from the Solo and was quite stoned. We were both getting moderate size clouds without much effort. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll be using the vaporizer from now on. It's only been a day, but I can't imagine going back to smoking full time.

welcome on board, wmassguy. with reliable connections you definitely hit the nerve here. another truth is, it's so hard to cultivate them, when you're almost not buying from them, because your stash lasts really long. :) always feel ashamed to decline, when i run in a good connection of mine and he offers me some of his good stuff and i have to politely refuse, because i still have plenty from the last batch. :) my combusting friends visit him 2 times a week, where i'm good with once a month.

ahah, axakal, same thing happens to me. Since May i was able to lower my average to ~2g a month, last time i went to get some was almost three months ago.

I like to buy a bit more each time, first because connections sometimes get severed unexpectedly due to various reasons and that way i'm never without and second because that way i get a better price.

I can't remember the last time i ran out. Truly. When i combusted the last two days of my batch were spent trying to get a hold of my connection since sometimes it isn't easy, and i always got a little bit anxious.

And about growing your own, i did the math and although it does compensate in the long run because weed is too damn expensive for it's production cost (thank you War on Drugs for creating such profitable ilegal business.), the amount of money i spend in a year on cannabis is less than what i would spend for a proper grow with good equipment. And i don't need more than a 150W for my needs.

Hell, if i buy one expresso a day i spend more on coffee than on cannabis. Did i mention i vape everyday? :D

Thank you FC and all the members and their contributions, i know for sure that if it wasn't for this forum i wouldn't be saying any of this and i would be either an unhappy and unhealthy smoker or i would not be smoking anymore and not enjoying our sweet cannabis. ;)

Thanks, axakal. I would never refuse good stuff though, even if I have a supply. Would love to have the luxury of a large amount of quality bud. I can almost get off on just looking at the buds in the glass jar, :).

That said, I am definitely looking forward to my stash lasting longer with the vaporizer.

Yeah, well it is an on-going process and i definitly didn't have this usage when i first started. I think i just trained myself to vape less and less, until i only vape at night.

That is the biggest difference. If you only vape at night and after work, then it's so much easier to cut on consumption.

A small bowl is also one of the biggest factors to take into account. And i mean a really small bowl. I notice a huge difference if i use one or another stem in my HI, and when i had my Solo and my WW, the Solo was a herb hog in comparison.
If you compare with something like an LSV or a Sublimator... just make sure you have the stash or the cash. ;)

The quality of the herb also plays a part but remember i leave in a place where there are no dispensaries so the quality is average at best compared to what you guys have in some states.

To give you some numbers, this year's average was about 0,13/day but since June it's half of that, 0,07g/day. :D

i am recreational smoker so i don't rely on medicating regularly. hence my consumption doesn't exceed 2g a month. more often even significantly less than that. with smoking i went through 1g during 2 nights. and i always hat these cravings for more.

I agree, a small bowl is the way to go. I've quit using my Cloud+ in favor of my SSV w/ screen mod, I can keep an eye on how dark my ABV gets, it only takes a pinch, and it is ready to go all evening. I'm afraid to leave my Cloud on and it takes a good 20 minutes to preheat.

axakal, i don't rely on medicating regularly either since i'm also not a medical user. But i do love to vape. :D

When i combusted, 2g lasted me from 3-5 days and i had to exercise self control. So, that is more than 10x less!

Just did some more math, i went from 0,2g/day when i started to log it, about 4 months after starting vaping, 3 months later i was down to 0,14g, 6 months later i was at 0,12g and these last 6months 0,07g a day.

This is a huge difference, like 3x less.

Like Vorrange I have been using less and less since I started vaping. I also live in a non dispensary state so what I get is only average hydroponics compared to some states(My guy says it is from Cali though). The small wand that comes with the DBV works perfectly for conserving(technique plays a huge part as well). I know puffing those huge clouds is fun, but that is a huge waste, I like taking long steady draws and holding it in for over 30 seconds. I still exhale just a tad bit of wisp(still wasting).

Something else that has played a huge part in my conservation as well is that I no longer "Crave" flowers like I did when I combusted. Maybe my body was actually craving the byproducts of combustion instead of the actual THC & CBD (any science behind that?).

Also just like Vorrange I only vape at night, and after work limiting myself to two sessions a night. This frequency in use along with the efficiency of vaporizing allows for quite potent sessions, even though I use little product.

Holy shit, I read this thread today, and it was totally exemplified today.

Doug Benson (of Super High Me) has a podcast with celebrities and get high at 4:20.

Anyways, I just saw the first episode:

And at 42:30 he suggests that they get a vaporizer for the show since his throat is irritated after smoking a couple bowls, however, he questions a user's purpose of marking the preferred temperature setting on the actual unit. He later asks why doesn't Volcano just make it at that setting if it's the best. Now, Doug has been a stoner for a bit, way long before me, but his understanding of vaporization and its benefits are still pretty elementary, which is really surprising. I did not expect Doug to not know there are differences in high based on temperature of vaporization.

It just seems that the whole idea of custom highs and achieving your preferred high through different temperatures is simply not exposed to the general public, and thus this huge benefit of vaporization is lost.

i don't know the science behind that, but i was exeriencing the same cravings, when i combusted regularly. one joint always led to a second. it was just too difficult to resist to roll another one. occasionally followed by a third one, which was rarely smoked to the end. i blame the nicotine, because rationally the first would be enough. also when i combusted regularly, i almost always felt the urge to smoke on the day after too.

Something else that has played a huge part in my conservation as well is that I no longer "Crave" flowers like I did when I combusted. Maybe my body was actually craving the byproducts of combustion instead of the actual THC & CBD (any science behind that?).

What you say about the concepts of "efficiency" and "getting significantly more..." seem so blindingly obvious to me! I cannot for the life of me understand why several of my friends have been so slow to see the benefits of vaping. The one excuse I get that you didn't list is "well, I'm not using it for medicinal reasons..." So, what, then, you can waste YOUR money because you're NOT disabled? I personally say that's all the MORE reason to make your stash last significantly longer: you got reasons to celebrate, at least while you're still able bodied...

What really caused ME to stick to vaping was that once I'd tasted unburnt marijuana for the first time, I could never stand the taste of burnt plants again. Not ever. Not even for a social hit. I'd rather do without than combust. I don't understand why I'm affected so strongly by that taste thing and others aren't (other than me being a taste whore and all...). For me, vaping was like being hit by Vape Lightning. Others don't even seem to get a tingle, even from that first virgin hit off of a full, endlessly reproducible balloon of thick milky medicinal weed!

I will say that the Arizer Solo has gone a long way toward changing some minds, though. A couple of friends are leaning toward owning one because it's so easy to use and the taste is good and it DOESN"T cost several hundred dollars. Thus, the one reasonable excuse anyone could have for not vaping is actually the very reason one should vape: it will save you loads of money. However, it is also unfortunately true that one needs a good steady three digits of hard earned Georges to get a decent vaping device with a short learning curve. I love my MFLB, but talk about a sophisticated learning curve (that box will NEVER convert anyone. It is for the hardcore hobbyist only, imho... I love it, but I already vaped when I got it, and it was STILL hard to use...)... And the Titan 1, clone of a clone of a clone, while easy to use, will toast your weed in 30 seconds if you're not careful -- again, not an issue if you already KNOW how to vape, but a show-stopper for a beginner.

Anyone know of a good beginner's vape, in terms of proselytizing the mainstream to our viewpoint? (or would that best be found elsewhere? Don't mean to get off topic here.)

Axatal: re not craving like you used to with weed? I believe it's the other way around. We don't crave weed the same way because we ARE getting what we need with vaping, where we were NOT getting what we needed from smoking. Combustion destroys delicate chemical relationships like the proverbial bull in a china shop. Vaping is a more refined, less destructive approach to absorbing cannabinoids. Perhaps it's also much much more effective on those subtle levels at which marijuana causes healing, down at the ecs level somewhere. I don't know the science, but I feel much more alert, less burdened by my drug load (chronic pain, tmjd etc), and far less attentive to how much dope I have at the moment (ie, relaxed about usage and perceived needs being met). And no fewer than five people have commented on the changes in my presence since vaping began. Of course, it's in the spirit of "I was really getting worried about you for a while there. But now that you're vaping..." as if that's somehow a compliment. It IS feedback, though, and thus, is appreciated as such. If we listen, people tell us interesting things about ourselves. It's not always easy, but it IS important info... imho, anyway...

@Qatmaster Cool. Check out the flower mate. Very much a cheap, simple and easy to use product IMO. The Titan 2 aka the hebe seems promising from what I have seen. I don't think anyone would say the perfect portable vaporizer has been produced yet. I think something that is a significant improvement on a solo must be close though. In my humble opinion, the solo is still the best portable around. A lot of people like the lotus too but I'm not into using flame based vaporizers myself.

That is exactly the model I'm looking at now. I'm saving up for it, found it near $80 on ebay, and will probably get it later this month. I'm hoping it's what it appears to be: a simple easy to use unit that's stealthy and worth the bucks.

The Titan 1 is damned good for $50. I do recommend it for some folks. I have one and I use it. I'm looking forward to the 2 or Hebe or whatever it's gonna be called or gonna clone, I don't care. This is my favorite all time hobby, and I will probably spend every spare cent of my wee allowance on vape gear for the rest of my days.

Honestly, though, it's gonna take a real work of art to dislodge the Solo from its #1 spot in my book. It's above the Volcano, imho, because it's more accessible. Had my sister, the best sister in the world, not decided I should have the best vaporizer possible, I'd still be saving for the Solo and yearning for the Volcano and using pen vapes up every month. Or I'd buy a Phantom (volcano clone). Assuming the Phantom works even HALF as well as the volcano (and since the parts appear to be interchangeable, that seems a reasonable asumption), at $129, it's a reasonable choice against the Solo. In fact, I'm probably gonna get one, just to find out. Right after the Flower Mate!

That was a great post @Seren

Vaporization has changed the game for me. I'm a bit of a tech geek and I love MJ, not only is vaporizing a healthier alternative to using but it married 2 of my favorite things together. It's much more to me than just a delivery system, it introduced me to all of you - finally for the first time I feel like I fit in. Granted, my wife get's pissed at all the time I put into my hobby/medicating but in reality she see's how much I enjoy it.

I'm so glad to see the industry growing as fast as it is.

I am just like you. Like my tech. and my MJ.

What made me smile is the comment about your wife complaining on the amount of time. My wife never particularly liked me puttin' down j's but she tolerated it. She rarely complained on how much time I spent on it. Now that I'm vaping with all the cleaning and loading she makes a smart remark here and there.

I bought an easy vape years ago when I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something.

I recently invested some bucks in some newer tech. including some portable units. The portability is what kept me on j's for years after the easy vape.

Now I am combustion free!

When my Pax crapped out I was forced to go back to the j for a minute and all I can say is gross! I used to smoke cigarettes years ago and it reminded me of that taste. Until I went combustion free I never noticed it.

Besides the obvious health benefits I especially appreciate the discretion that comes along with portable vaping. I never liked that my car and clothes stunk to high hell after combusting. The low smell alone was enough for me to switch full time and guess what, my wife appreciates it too.

Ok then. ...just stumbled onto this thread and thought we had something in common. Thanks for listening....
