I'm rocking the 2.5" 4 Chamber Chromium Crusher from Amazon. For $15, the quality cannot be beat.

just bought a space case 2 piece medium titanium and i noticed on several spots the coating had flaked off and i could see the silver aluminum underneath, anyone else have problems with space case coating coming off? Is it better if the grinder is made of untreated aluminum or anodized. After i return it should i buy a cali crusher ( looks real good for the price), another space case, or a santa cruz shredder

cali crusher link: how good is the anodized coating on it? http://www.amazon.com/Cali-Crusher®-Piece-Grinder--CC-2-B/dp/B00B4E8UFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405153875&sr=8-1&keywords=cali crusher 2 piece

One thing I have never understood about metal grinders:
Why the goddamn centre post always has to be on the wrong side...
It's like it on my SCS, and my SC...
The "male" centre post is in the "female" side of the grinder...
So this means I have to
A - pack my bud into the male side of the grinder, but specifically move my bud out of the centre spot, or have a little pancake of flattened bud. Or
B - pack my bud into the female side of the grinder, and specifically move my bud away from the outer edge, or end up with a big ring of flattened bud...

If they simply moved the raised centre post to the male side of the grinder, one could easily load up that side of the grinder with no worry of bud placement...

It's one of those little things that doesn't really matter, but gets annoying when you have to deal with it almost every day...

Buy the same Space Case, but with no titanium.
I wrote my feelings about the Space Case Titanium coating here; http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/herb-grinders.15/page-127#post-283429
It is terrible, while it's uncoated brither is great!
( I do prefer my SCS, however... but SC is no slouch.)

so you would say non anodized is better than anodized? Does the cali crusher or scs have problems with their anodized coating flaking? Theoretically anodized should be stronger than aluminum but i guess space case doesn't have their anodizing process down

I have a cheap metal grinder, and the center post is on the other side exactly how you describe. Unfortunately I HATE this configuration and much prefer the center post where it is on the SCS grinder.

Because with my cheap grinder, my friend would always shove the nugget in and grind - and it would do just as you say - create a pancake in the center and the grinder could never get a fine grind because of the gap created by the pancake in the center.

Either way you look at it - the center post is a PITA, putting it on the other side makes it just that much harder to remember to avoid the center of the grinder (my friend was notorious for this in my old cheap grinder). With the SCS - it's quite obvious to my friends that don't use grinders where to put the herb

Oh I did not realize that is where the magnet is. It would be nice without the post as it would improve surface area and ease of use. If they could figure it out it would be a big improvement for grinders.

In my experience, all anodizing isn't the same. I've only found a few brands- MixnBall (out of production), Titan, Head Chef hard anodized 2 pc. and black mini 2 pc.- where the anodized finish really holds up and doesn't show scratches or even chip off. The Space Case titanium finish doesn't hold up much better than the 'paint like' anodizing on other brands. For better long term appearance I'd definitely buy the plain SC vs. the titanium. In theory anodizing may keep a grinder sharper longer, but in real world use that's really a non-factor, and the main benefit of anodizing is that less herb sticks to the grinder and it doesn't have to be cleaned as often.

NeeChee said:
Why can't they just design a grinder without the center posts?
It's certainly doable, but apparently the vast majority of grinder buyers want a magnet to hold the grinder together, and the only place for a big enough magnet, for a secure grip, is in the middle. The center post is also almost always a grinding tooth as well.

I prefer no color at all.. that is just me.
That means I prefer non anodized where I can do it.
I will say that it is my belief that anodizing, generally speaking "takes up less space".
Some anodizing gets dents and marks, without ever losing a flake... the color becomes part of the surface layer.
The anodizing does not add the same thickness of excess layer of a "titanium dip".
If you look under microscope at the titanium coated Space Case, you will see the thick layer more easily, and notice the occasional globular appearance, similar to a not-too-prominent drip of dried paint, around the edges of a door jam's corners.

I am posting this as a warning. I was on here not to long ago, as most of you know, and I handled myself very poorly. I was mad because I felt ripped off about a santa cruz grinder I had received. I made a post ranting about it. I did however sense then get a hold of the maker of the grinder themselfs. I was at first very happy. They told me that they would send me a free mini grinder with the next grinder I ordered from them. Which was awesome because it wasn't them I had purchased the grinder from. I figured that while I had to pay for another grinder, this was still a pretty sweet deal.

However the grinder then arrived and there were teeth that had no paint on them at all. The metal was completely exposed, and while you might not be able to tell in this pic. If you rubbed it with your finger nail or anything you would stick in there, the metal would flake off.

Here is a pic, I know this is a good while sense my last post. However it took me a while to find a camera that took pictures detailed enough to capture this, and as you guys know I have no camera. Anyways here is a pic.

http://tinypic.com/r/rr2lft/8

It doesn't end there either. I contacted them about this once I had pictures. I had not used the grinder at all. First when I contacted them, they tried to deny that there was any dmg in the picture. First they said the only dmg that they noticed in the pics was small notches from the grinder parts drying on racks.... After I described every detail of the three pics I sent them ( while they were looking at them too on their end ) they said ok that dmg shouldn't be there. They then said they would ship out a new grinder once they received the grinder I now had to send them, which was fine. So I sent them the grinder. It had tracking. It got there on a Thursday, and about 11:40 in the afternoon. Sadly 4 bis days later I still didn't receive anything. At this point I emailed them asking if they had shipped it out. I was very nice and said that I was sure they had already shipped it out, but I was just wondering what was going on. In reply to that e,mail I got a tracking number sent to me. They didn't say a word, they just sent the tracking number to me in which said That they had finally shipped it out, that day.

Now I have finally received this new grinder, again. However there is a huge chip on the outside of the thing, its huge. Honestly the piece looks used. When you put it in any kind of light you can see there are a huge amount scratches on it, it looks very used. I guess at least this one isn't on the inside at least. Should I contact them yet again? I'm starting to worry that they are doing this on purpose due to me being mad at first. So I guess sense I got mad because I received a faulty product now I am doomed? True I can use it just fine, cause it doesn't have any chips on the inside. However it does suck ass looking at a scratched up, chipped grinder that I just spent 65 dollars on, and it supposed to be new, and top of the line. I'm just really bumbed out about this. The part that is chipped is the lower piece too. So that every time I turn it upside down and grind ( I grinder with the grinder upside down for a finer grind ) I get to stare at this huge chip.

Exactly. I think that the titanium part of the sc anodizing process is the likely culprit with these. Proper (non-titanium) anodizing of aluminum doesn't chip or flake ime, from what I have read it's more of an electro-chemical reaction than a coating per se. My sharpstone and two scs grinders seem excellent in this regard, the sharpstone has been in operation for a few years now and only shows a bit of gentle wear.

Some individuals are more apt to notice chips and imperfections....
perhaps you have a SUPER refined and detailed eye.
I looked at your picture with high powered magnification
I will take for granted that you speak of the chip on the tooth at lower left:
imts8p.jpg

The flaw was hard to find, and truth is I would not find this too alarming.
Knowing how detail oriented you are, I would think you would stop going for colors, and
stick with the original look. (that is my practice!)
I will make the recommendation that you try future purchases in retail stores, since you have had ill fortune with the results of shopping sight unseen.

The entire edge of the tooth is metal without either paint, or anodizing to protect it, the picture shows this clearly. If you rub anything against the metal, a toothpick, or your fingernail. Then metal flakes off. When you have such a fine edge as that on the teeth on the grinder, with nothing protecting it, metal shavings come right off. That grinder pictured was not usable unless you don't mind flakes of metal in whatever you are grinding.

I guess you are right. I guess they can't be trusted to send me a grinder that isn't chipped, or that has all of the teeth coated. I thought spending 65 dollars would put my detail seeing eyes at rest, I guess I was wrong.

:edit: I guess there is no difference between a ten dollar grinder and a 65 dollar grinder. I mean if I can't seem to receive one without it being chipped, or worse without entire teeth edge's being covered.....

That does seem like it could be a defect in the aluminum itself. I'm surprised scs wasn't more interested in having you send it in to them, where they could inspect it, guarantee its authenticity, and see what may have gone wrong with it. Either that or somebody accidentally ground up some rocks in it. Seriously, a small pebble could make it into a bag once in a while... but it reportedly came like this new, and the next new one that came direct from scs arrived with a scratch on the outside? Man that's a serious run of bad luck!

You have this a little wrong. The first grinder was chipped, that one I didn't get pictures of. That one I had ordered from a retailer, not SC them self's. The one pictured is the one that they, them self's, sent to me. Now, the 2nd one they sent to me, has more then a scratch, but rather a chip, with many scratches around it. Most of it is fine, however the kief catcher, the lower piece... It looks as it its been used for a long time. That is the best way I can describe the scratches. Other then the chip you wouldn't even be able to see them without moving it around it the light. One you do move it around though there are many, many scratches some deeper then others, some of them knicks at the edge of the unit. I know it probably sounds stupid, its just the point of spending so much in a grinder. Both grinders that SC sent me, I paid 65 for each. So while they still threw in the free mini grinder for the blunder with the retailer... I still paid for them. Reading so much about it being this awesome thing that doesn't chip, and ect ect. Not to mention everybody posts these cool reviews of theirs, and they look awesome! Then I got this one lol, its sad to think about it.

:edit: I've found finger nail polish that matches it very closely and I've been trying to do a touch up job. The chip is still very there but now at least its only a slightly different purple color on the metal, instead of a silver chip winking at everybody.

:edit2: Screw it I'm over it. I've got it even less noticable now. Its still the best grinder in terms of how it grinds, which is perfect for vaping. I'm not going to get that anywhere else. If anybody asks about the chip I'll just say "what chip?

You aren't worried about nail polish flaking off?
Doesn't strike me as a good fix for the health concious consumer...

Or are you talking about exterior scratches?

Definitely bad luck, I've always been happy with my SCS..

Do you think the space case "standard" will flake as well? On their website it says even the standard silver ones are anodized which kinda confused me as i thought only the colored ones are anodized. Or should i just get a scs

So with further use its come to my attention that in the grinding chamber on this santa cruz grinder, where the thing spins, and where grinder can become gummed up. Well in this finely crafted santa cruz grinder is a huge indent thing. So every time I grind up weed, it gums up there really bad. So if I want anything close to that smooth action I get to clean this thing out after every bowl or two. Otherwise it all build up around that really bad. I have had three of these things sent to me, and not one of them has been anything close to what its supposed to be..... How do these grinders have anything but a crap rep by now?

Where are you buying your grinder from are you certain it's not a knockoff?

My SCS has performed like a champ. Any herb that is compressed against the walls of the grinder typically come loose eventually. I rarely try to remove any gunk from the walls, I let it come free when it wants to naturally.

I'd been using tw cheapo grinders for years, I finally upgraded to the SCS after I was tired of gunk buildup on my cheapo non-anodized grinder. So far I've been pleased with my purchase

Yeah I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem on mine either, other then the fact ( of what I already described mind you ) that there is a huge indent where the bud gums up. Or rather not an indent, but like a very wide deep scratch, but its not a scratch. Its been painted, and anodized over. However it is a very nice groove for bud to build up. After you grind 2 or 3 bowls you have to clean it out, or it feels very rough.

I purchased a ergo grinder a long time ago. It had several of these grooves on it. The ergo grinder wasn't anodized at all however, it was very cheaply made. I never thought I would fine the same thing on a santa cruz.

Oh also, the last two Santa Cruz grinders I owned, I ordered from SCS themselfs......

The first time I contacted SCS I was really pissed. I am starting to wonder that if because of that, they are sending my faulty stuff on purpose.

:Edit: I had even googled and found this polish that is made for aluminium anodised surfaces. I was going to order it, and use it on the outside of the piece that I received so badly scratched. Now though, I guess fuck it.

http://www.polish-up.com.au/products/autosol-anodised-aluminium-polish-1920.html

:edit2: I just don't understand how I can have so many horrible products sent to me from these people. So many rave reviews. I don't understand how anything other then them ripping me off could be happening.

Edit3 you guys know what? I'm getting a awesome shotglass and some awesome scissors!

Are you speaking about the area underneath the centerpost?
Don't put material in the center. This was just discussed in detail,
