Has Colorado THC Potency Become Too High?

I guess this is kinda the edible thread, so I thought I'd share my recent pickup. Best edible I've gotten from a dispensary:

My tolerance has dropped recently but I still get impressively stoned from just eating 5-6 of them. They taste great too!

Bill Maher wouldn't have the control like he has now, if he was on CBS. He wouldn't be able to say curse words. For me he's up there with comedian George Carlin, who I will always miss. Wanted to see him in person, but didn't happen.

Comedy central, but i get your point. I didn't mean get BM over Colbert for his new gig.

Idk about flowers being too strong, but I agree with the above quote that edibles may be too strong.
JUst got back from Colorado 2 weeks ago. Yes, the potency of the edibles is too high. 2 small jelly berries were sufficient to have music completely usurp the interior of my skull. And I had the misfortune of under-guesstimating how many actual 10 mg segments were in that melted lump I decided to down after we got out of Nebraska (I lost all sensation of having a body, becoming pure awareness in a 360 degree sphere). Now for ME, someone who is 55 years old, has experienced acid, speed, coke, mushrooms, etc, a panic attack can be managed. I can simply tell myself this is a bad trip and that in one to several hours it'll be over. But for a newbie, for a child, this could be a traumatizing event. They can't recognize the markers, nor know that it will really be over soon. They could very well end up in the ER. So I'm equivocal about the edibles. I don't think they'll really hurt anybody, but the subjective experience of a panic attack is extremely frightening. I wouldn't want to see children consuming these (and it would be really easy to mix up those berry gummies with regular berry gummies), or even adults who haven't been educated as to how to use them.

Do you mean these? I took 6, it wasn't enough. Plus I was over charged I paid $25. I see other places it's about $15 - $18. They have wonderful herb at their dispensary, so it's cool. Make sure you shop and get the best price. Ten mg per candy. Most folks with high tolerances go a bit higher I hear. Maybe 80-100mg? Everybody is different.

Go slow with edibles, only you know how much. Sometimes is more than a hour before it starts to kick in.

I find it very interesting that edibles are so easy to over medicate with, seeing as they have supposedly standardized amounts of THC. Is 100mg a 100mg a 100mg across the board ? Why do so many, including me, have trouble finding out how many mg's it takes. I get the impatience thing, thinking it's too little and then overcompensating. But it seems like there is something else at play.

There's a difference between it being too high in general, and it being too high for you. And that's beside the fact that there's thousands of options with different doses.
True Jared. But it's a part of my point, so I'm glad you raised the subjective aspect. Since it depends on the person, I think it's even more important to keep dosages low, especially for products that could be easily mistaken for candy. The effects of higher dosages are just too unpredictable.

Yup, those are it. I must have an extremely low tolerance because 20 mg (the 2 berries) was more than enough for me.

Why should someone with a higher tolerance be forced to eat possibly 100 times as much candy or food in order to feel the same effects as someone with a lower tolerance? Why can't adults just be adults, and read the labels? There are different doses for a reason. Also the "mistaking it for candy" thing is absurd in my opinion. Parents and adults should be responsible enough to keep marijuana infused products out of the reach of children and in a labeled container or package.

That would be amazing, I would have to eat two of those bags to be where I would really want to be.

If I had two of those bags I'd be unconscious. lol

Yeah, it is inconvenient and expensive being me. Luckily there are finally some potent edibles for a recent donation rate in my area: Coma Treats. They have a 257 mg THC brownie for only a 10 dollar donation. Thanks to them I can finally get obliterated off of medibles for less than $50.

I recognize the good sense of what you're saying and for myself personally I see nothing wrong with THC packaged in whatever form (as long as it's labeled). But this is the thing: when it comes to public safety we usually err on the side of being more careful. It may be an inconvenience for you to have to consume several bags of edibles to get the same high as just a couple pieces. But a couple pieces might send a child to the emergency room of the local hospital. Convenience won't trump safety (or perceived safety). It's like putting a child lock cap on a bottle of tylenol. It might be a pain for adults to open the bottle, but we recognize that we just have to make it as hard as possible for kids to get a hold of these medications. In the same way, a kid is much less likely to eat a whole bag of candy right away than a couple pieces.
Apart from the actual problems related to consumption by children, there is also the issue of bad publicity for legalized weed and its edible products. If people really start freaking out on this stuff, there will be a call for more regulations. They might even outlaw edibles altogether. I don't think we want that.
Maybe I worry too much about these things (I'm a mom). When I saw and held and ate those berries...I flashed right back to being kid and how YUMMY they were.

Well that's good! Wow, if I ate one of those things, well I guess I already said I'd be unconcious, but who knows? Maybe an acid trip? That is a lot of THC. I bet in the future there will be a 'top shelf' kind of product that will be super saturated. Like a high end high alcohol content vodka it probably wouldn't be marketed as bubble gum.

I had that experience with the chocolates. The first time I tried them I ate two pieces. It wasn't bad. The second time I had the equivalent of two pieces but it had melted and then hardened (after I put it in the fridge). The second time was the bad trip (it was actually worse than the time I consumed 10 mushrooms in Jamaica and got super paranoid, hearing the spirits of dead jellylfish tell me that I should avoid any American made light fixtures). I wondered later if the fat content (which acts as the medium and catalyst for the THC) was of uniform consistency in the chocolate. Other variables were more obvious; i was tired and hungry before eating it the second time or maybe there were double the pieces in the melted lump and I didn't know it.

The potential safety of people who shouldn't be ingesting this stuff isn't more important than my freedom :)

And about the whole kids getting a hold of it thing.....I guess prescription pills shouldn't be a thing either. Kids might get a hold of them and think they're tic-tacs! And it only takes 1 of those in some cases to kill a child!

Ok....(and I like that you're challenging me btw because I really have to dig into why I'm feeling and thinking as I do) I'll present to you a scenario. There are two cute little red candy berries on the table next to two pills. If you're a kid, which would you rather pop in your mouth? And which do you assume is candy if you're old enough to know the difference? When I was growing up a pill was a pill. You didn't take it unless you absolutely knew what it was. Even today if I find a pill in the house I study it. I want to know exactly what it is, how it got there, if it should be tossed out, etc. You could say it's guilty until proven innocent. It's the other way around with the gummies and chocolates. I first assume, as my children would also assume, that it's only candy. It only gets to be 'guilty' after I eat it and find out that space has contracted and time has slowed down. By then, of course, it's too late.
Which brings me to....what you're saying about the toxicity of prescription pills that kids do get their hands on and that do kill them is a really critical point. What we should be able to understand, in this country, is that NO ONE has ever been killed directly by marijuana consumption. That includes kids. I wish sometimes I could just scream that out and have everyone hear it. It is just so incredibly ridiculous to me that mj is still considered a schedule 1 substance. People should understand that even if there is an accident and child consumes to much of this stuff, they are not going to be seriously harmed. They just have to be calmed down, maybe go to sleep and wear it off. That said, I'll pose to you another hypothetical (borrowed from a comment I just made to another person on this thread): would you be ok with a high alcohol content product being marketed as bubble gum?

Bought this at a dispensary in WA. The cost is $5 donation. I got one free because I am a new patient. Each has 50mg THC. I see the chocolate one is bigger, but it should be the same THC wise.
EDIT: I ate the fruity Krispy treat 2 hours ago. I don't think I notice much of anything.

Maybe some sort of standardized logo for cannabis, like a stylized leaf in a red and green outline or something. Just like you can recognize a liquor container the moment you see it. The package above doesn't look like something that may very well make you really stoned.

I mean it does say it has cannabis in it right on the package and not for children and it does have the little two snakes medical symbol. I find it very far fetched to think that package wouldn't get you stoned.

Plus the fact that you bought it from a purveyor of Marijuana products could help you decide to keep these "treats" locked away in a medicine cabinet and not sitting out in a candy dish to tempt the kids.

The word cannabis and the medical symbol are very tiny. There should be a consistent, prominent, highly visible logo or shape to the package that tells an adult immediately without close inspection what it is. This is common sense which we have already adopted for alcohol packaging. Tobacco and other types of medicine too.

I am not blaming the current makers of these things. They have no standard yet to follow. But seriously go up the page and look at the package. Common sense tells you that needs a large logo or something which would be consistent across brands. A novice can really fuck themselves up with edibles so let's at least start out with some sort of logo or shape that will prevent the obvious mistakes.

The package was sealed. A child under 8 yrs old would have had to work very hard to open this package. I was glad that they are at least doing that. It said 50 mg that wasn't enough ( i had an empty stomach too) I think somewhere around 80 to 100 mg for me. Everybody is different. There does need to be some uniformity with these edibles with cannabis.

Often home based businesses are filling the need for the mmj dispensaries. I have been buying this fudge that has RSO and melatonin. It doesn't say the THC level on the pkg. The bud tender told me it has 80mg THC. That gets me to sleep, most of the time. It is made from a home based business.

There are some large companies that are starting to fill in the gap such as the Gormet Edible company, Wana and Edipure. I think we will get some standard based edibles in the future. Cannabis is just starting to be accepted in general society, but only in some areas of the world.
