Just Some Loser
my middle son (of 3) was recently diagnosed as moderatly autistic. my wife really wants me to go and have a diagnosis too... eish:uhoh:. a whole other thought process that brings me great anxiety!...

One thing that I am still learning (from a dear friend and mentor), is... Having a name that explains the reason for certain things you do.... It offers nothing more than comfort and a clearer direction on where to go next.

It is not my intention to discredit your anxiety, in any way! In fact, anxiety is my best friend/worst enemy and roommate. Just, try not to let anxiety own you.

Autistic or no... there are plenty of people out there dealing with something. No one is perfect! And, should you prove to be autistic, you and your son will have something extra to bond over while you learn, together!

Either way, autistic or no... It is an answer, not a death sentence. Remember that.

Take care!

but in his honor I thought I would share a little photo of some pumpkin carving I did a few years ago for him. he thought it was the coolest ever! and it won me a little prize in the contest I entered it into... I really enjoy this thread every time I read it.

First off (backwards), Awesome Pumpkin Carving!!!! If you have Aspergers, is definitely a different version than mine. I'm as artistic as if I had 10 thumbs!!!!

You may want to visit this site and take a preliminary test...

Aspergers or AS or Autism is a journey of learning. Learning how to deal, blend, cope, enhance or use gifts given, and a whole lot of other things. Please always feel free to drop by and post, questions/comments/ or just to vent. Welcome!

My hubby scored 32.

His outward personality is pretty opposite of mine - he's the quiet, thoughtful one - but we both know that the secret to successful relationships is finding someone who's crazy is compatible/complementary to one's own. He and I dovetail so very well...

the test was actually difficult for me, in some ways. I have, over the years, built so many layers, personae, and coping skills, that digging down for my inside, true, gut responses... well, that wasn't my best effort, I'm sure. I feel that way about all quizzes, though. I do not have the ONE right answer for anything... I have to analyze, ponder, and qualify every f-ing thing.

When I was a kid, I did not play well with others. I spent all my free time reading books. cereal boxes. labels. hell, I found the cutest money back coupon once, by reading the f-ing fine print!

I cry extremely easily. for the stupidest reasons, too. seriously. I cried over VXL's making their IGG goal. Yeah, I know SM probably cried too, but mine was a deep, emotional response that really was entirely out of proportion to the event. That's how crazy I am, in that sense. :)

I have developed amazing coping skills. When they are working, you would have no idea I'm not just a sweet, outgoing, friendly, extroverted grandma who can talk to anyone about anything; when they aren't, my anxiety makes me very cold, uncommunicative, and shy.

Unless my anxiety kicks in hard, then I will start talking to cover it... a mile a minute, hardly a breath, and you won't get a word in edgewise, ever. I get very bright, like a bulb flaring before it breaks, and almost frenetic.

And, quite seriously, I was unaware of just how much coping skills I was using my entire life, until I broke recently. 50+ years of coping is really tough to crawl out from under, and it's f-ing scary, too.

Hi @Enchantre,

it's really great to hear how you and hubby compliment each other. I've been blessed with an understanding "better half" who is an Neuro-typical. We do a lot of communicating, and I think that's part of the key!

I hate tests as well. I normally talk myself out of the right answers while I reanalyze, quantify, qualify, etc... really hate that! hahaha

Coping skills are fun, no? Kidding... but disguising yourself as "sweet, outgoing, friendly, extroverted grandma who can talk to anyone about anything", that's awesome! Still working on my alter-ego, but once done am out to get me a jumpsuit and cape.... ;)

And you can probably tell how much I can talk, by how much I can type in a posting here at FC...

Have an awesome weekend!

I feel a little silly taking this test when there is a "CHAT FREE WITH NEW THAI LADIES" advertisement right next to it.

Or is that part of the test?

Just kidding! Anyway... here goes...

I'm borderline as well :D

I think the biggest variable might be self-honesty, on a subconscious level. It's really difficult to make accurate self-assessments with tests like these, there is too much second guessing and interference by factors such as self-taught mitigation of one's condition as a coping and even survival skill. We need to find a way to test people without interference from these subconscious filters, good luck with that!

@Enchantre, I can cry from a damn mickey d's commercial, I'm such a sucker for emotional manipulation even when I know it's happening. I cried this morning from reading lebron jame's letter about returning to cleveland, like it has anything in the world to do with my own life. Yes the mask, it only happens in private.

 edit: sorry about getting you two mixed up @Vicky (whoever you are;)), and @Enchantre!

Agreed on all counts! Those tests are very subjective in relation to what 1) we truly are in comparison to 2) who we want or see ourselves to be!

I've yet to find the stereotypical Aspie who has no emotions. We may keep em hidden, but they are there --- stronger than most would believe!

It's weird - I've taken that test over the years just for shits n giggles ...very different score each time. First test indicated a significant number of points above borderline; 2nd test within borderline range; and yesterday a score of 23, much below borderline. It appears that self truths and denials are a constantly shifting picture. I always strive to be honest, painfully so, with myself and in my dealings with others - for me I think it is as much of a practice as it is an art - each modality has its fluidity, and I think is no less genuine at any point on the spectrum. "To thine own self be true" may be more of a tightrope walk than we ordinarily realize, or are willing to consciously admit.

@Snappo, very very true!

Two very close friends took the test last night as I watched.... They are Neuro-Typicals, but I had to call them out on several of the questions as they answered so completely out of their normal character it wasn't funny... Well, actually it was hella-funny how many times I had to call them out, that they started calling each other out too....

There's sometimes a big difference as to who we are in relation to who we want to be!

In my experience I find that the truth is usually somewhere in between - be it between two or more people, or oneself;).

It's okay, I understand. @Vicki seems to be my "soul sister" here on FC... we have some amazing similarities... she is "thin, gorgeous" Vicki, and I'm "really not thin" Vic... um, yeah. me.

See, it all makes sense.

You mention self-honesty. I like that phrase. Since my emotional breakdown [just so you know, that phrase is making ME cringe] I have been digging through the piles of "coping" masks, layers, personae, etc., in an attempt to figure out who "Me" is. Some of those piles are covering some pretty nasty scars, many of which aren't really healed, so I'm still shying past a few "issues", so far, in order to gain a little traction with coping while going through all this. I am the world's biggest fraud. seriously, I was hiding so much shit from myself, let alone the rest of the world... I still have to double-check that I'm not using a personae/mask when I'm talking to my hubby!

Okay, you know that cartoon about having to stay online because "someone is wrong on the Internet!"?
Yeah, I'm more like "someone might think I'm wrong! I have to exPLAINNNNNNNNN....." :)

Hey! Was listening to music while working on something and wifey overheard... her comment was "Hey, that's your song." You know, I identified with the lyrics, the music was pleasing to me, so I didn't catch the content.... but as always... she was right! I do :luv::love: her!

"Monster"
By Imagine Dragons

Ever since I could remember,
Everything inside of me,
Just wanted to fit in (oh oh oh oh)
I was never one for pretenders,
Everything I tried to be,
Just wouldn't settle in (oh oh oh oh)

If I told you what I was,
Would you turn your back on me?
And if I seem dangerous,
Would you be scared?
I get the feeling just because
Everything I touch isn't dark enough
That this problem lies in me

I'm only a man with a candle to guide me,
I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me.
A monster, a monster,
I've turned into a monster,
A monster, a monster,
And it keeps getting stronger.

Can I clear my conscience,
If I'm different from the rest,
Do I have to run and hide? (oh oh oh oh)
I never said that I want this,
This burden came to me,
And it's made its home inside (oh oh oh oh)

If I told you what I was,
Would you turn your back on me?
And if I seem dangerous,
Would you be scared?
I get the feeling just because,
Everything I touch isn't dark enough
That this problem lies in me

I'm only a man with a candle to guide me,
I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me.
A monster, a monster,

And it keeps getting stronger.

I seem to be finding more and more music written about or by us! Wondering how many of us have shaped the music industry? And history?

That's a great song! I sometimes thought this similar song was "my" song.

My score was only 15 and I'm not very social at all lol. I think that's the lowest so far.

I think my anxiety and guarded nature are more of a factor in my lack of social interaction skills. I have social anxiety which I mask for the most part, but definitely prefer being alone or in small groups where I know everyone. I dislike large groups or parties where I have to meet and communicate with a lot of people. It's just tremendously uncomfortable...

When you're a type B person like me and you're thrown in a room full of type A strangers it's just exhausting...
