Well it passed the first hurdle.

"The Empire State took an important step towards becoming the 23rd state to adopt medical marijuana. On Tuesday the Senate voted 9-8 in favor of S. 4406B, the Compassionate Care Act. This now sends the bill to the Senate Finance Committee."

This is big news in the Republican controlled NYS Senate. Often bills will die in committee, never even coming up for a vote on the Senate floor. However there are several more hurdles: the bill still needs to clear the Senate Finance Committee and then it may or may not be considered in the full Senate before the legislative session ends on June 19.

The senator who introduced the bill, Diane Savino, said it "would create the tightest most regulated program in the nation."

Well at least it would show some progress.

is it still the understanding that if we reach over half of the states as being medical that it becomes mandatory amongst all states like it was with alcohol coming out of prohibition? if so then we only have a few to go!

No, this is not correct. You may be thinking about an amendment to the United States Constitution.

But that would take a two-thirds majority in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives & then approval by three-fourths (38) of the states legislatures.

And while we're making some progress, we're a long way from that happening.

I think my chances of ever becoming a legal user of MMJ in NYS just went down the drain. They already removed Glaucoma from the list and removed Psoriasis yesterday... :(

It seems like the Democratic governor of NY is more conservative than the notoriously reactive Republicans in the NYS Senate. Is Cuomo afraid of appearing soft on drugs? Or does he just want to scuttle this bill?

It looks like all New Yorkers chances of becoming legal users of MMJ are going down the drain. At least any time soon.

He gutted the bill down to almost no medical conditions and wants stricter control on prescriptions and limits. Honestly, how can dr , who's probably never used cannabis, realistically know how much and what kind to prescribe. The patients need to try what works best for them .

I think this is about a future run for president ..

There are certainly political ramifications, especially for Democratic governors. Here are some quotes from a NYTimes article that examined this issue.

But the bill was restrictive to begin with & in the latest revision it's been watered down even more. Is this progress? Honestly, I'm not sure it is.

The bill, which will be taken up before the Legislature ends its legislative session this week, also contains a 7-year sunset provision, up from the 5 years Cuomo had pushed for.

Yes I would like to know more about the illnesses contained.

I have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and live in pain 24/7. TMI but my colon is clear and the doc thinks it's due to the MJ.

So I just want to be able to try to get it for myself. Not sure why they allow oil and not then plant itself. Don't they realize the oil is far more powerful?

I notice some of these states aren't including chronic pain as some of their criteria for medical use. Thats a real shame for some folks that live in constant pain.

Edit: If vaping is legal, but combustion is illegal, will the police receive specialized training on identifying combustion? Like when they stop someone and look at their ABV.... "Son, there's black in there. You've combusted. You're busted."

This is the most ridiculous MMJ bill EVER!!!. He just lost my vote :rolleyes:. None of my legitimate conditions are on the bill and those that can get a card, can't vape whole flowers:mental:. Oils and edibles are not for everyone. What a fucked up bill:uhh:. I'm happy for the people in my state that "may' benefit from the bill, if they can get a card :doh:

This Senator Libous is an ASS, he has prostate cancer and he's against the bill. He's worried that it's gonna give people false hope for a cure :rolleyes: No one is saying it's a cure -it's palliative care. The Cure studies need to be done, like they are doing in other countries.

Now someone wants to know if the "dispensers" will favor hiring vets and women and minorities-um YES, if they are qualified and knowledgeable on cannabis.

No they won't because the bill keeps flowers illegal, the bill only allows for oil and limits consumption to vaporizers or pills.

It's really a stupid bill and leaves so many patients out of it altogether . I don't have an issue banning combustion , but it's obvious that none of these people have any clue about concentrates and that you can just vape flowers without combustion.

So what are they gonna do-hand out vape pens and edibles? A lot of people don't like using MMJ that way.

Nys also wants to regulate e-cigs but they essentially just made them a medical device, or at the very least opened the door for a lawsuit claiming they are.

even tho it legalized, they require you to get from a total of 20 hospitals in ny and limit how much you can receive. even tho we all have vapes most low income families cant even medicate. ny is the strictest medical marijuana state now besides nj......also fucked up they took out ptsd(post tramatic stress sydrone) out of the bill, which many soldiers come back with cant even medicate when they risked their lives. and the sob tried to limit hiv/aids and tumors, that lil fucker. he needs to hang himself, at the beginning of the bill he was fine with everything now he being a whiney complaining bitch about it. hope no one votes for his ass in the upcoming elections.
