David Goldstein's Fritted Disc

Cleaning fritts is fun . . . I have noticed, now that I finally got some good oil, that a big hit "drags" through the fritt and "restricts" it to a certain degree. More cranberry helps "lube" this but its not a silver bullet.

Have you tried it with a fibre pre-filter?

No.

Edit: It seemed like smaller dabs weren't a problem, it was the umm . . larger ones that seemed to condense in the frit.

Yeah, I meant with a big hit. I was replying to the post where you said that a big hit "drags".

This question is kind of OCD but seeing as how the perc is just shards of glass stuck together, overtime cant the structure deteriorate and make glass pieces go up in your lungs through the bubble stackage?

Nah the pieces are way to way big to be inhaled much less respirable into the lungs.

Has anyone been noticing the quality of the dg pieces is getting worse? I've owned a dg for a few years, my bro just picked up a converter and the
Frit is super thin, the ground glass joint is thinner, also the bottom under the frit no longer has a dimple pushed in it. The tube is a lot shorter as well. It's not just a one off problem either. I have a friend that owns the shop and all of the newer pieces are like this.

That's funny that you say the fritt is thin because I actually sent one back to Nvs for that exact problem. They sent me a better one but I know that David wasn't blowing his own pieces anyone and the quality seemed to suffer.

god are you serious? This is making my glass choosing so difficult! Everyreputable company has some shady backstory to it where they have gotten too popular and now they are sending lower quality pieces to make up for the demand. Maybe I really should just go with the cheap "American Glass"

I see he still puts those shit ass labels on there too.

BTW, have you ever browsed this guys webpage? Dude seems like a grade A dick.

Check out some of the stuff from this FAQ page:

http://roosterapparatus.com/faq/

Q. Can I get custom fabrication?
A. Sculpture, worked sections and other non-functional external decoration are frowned upon.
Apparatus with non-functional decoration is extremely rare and not available for less than a thousand dollars.

Q. Can my friend who blows glass decorate the piece in the aftermarket?
A. This is very risky and not recommended. The first bonehead who tried broke the piece.

Q. Can I get a splash guard?
A. No. If you don’t like water in your mouth, choose a chimney shape

Q. I have a fritted disc that has a growing crack through the center from every day usage. If you could email me so I can show you some pictures of the disc and get some answers and help. Thanks Dave! Jason.heinzmann@gmail.com

Never heard that before. There is no rationale for such a thing happening unless you are dropping stuff on it, or cleaning it with boiling water, both of which are negligence on your part.

There is a possibility that the disc was broken (by rookie worker) to start with. Send a pic of the damage and piece to glassguy@spiritone.com. If it’s a rookie piece, I can accept it was broken to begin with and replace it. If it was made by someone who’s got experience, I’m attributing it to negligence on your part.

Pieces that are broken to begin with don’t work right to begin with, they usually come right back through the retailer. Your story falls on the doubtful side thus far

If you want to make a good impression, be polite and get to the point quickly.

If you want to make a bad impression, display a large ego, use bad language, or expound on how much high-end glass you already own. We bust ass to get product out the door, please don’t distract us from that task with information we do not need or care to know. It is also unwise to refer to ground joints as “glass-on-glass” or to refer to a 19 joint as an 18 joint.

Check earlier in this thread, he was around here for like a month.

If his attitude while he was here is anything to go by, then his website seems to be a pretty accurate representation of his personality...

I love the glass he makes (I guess made? The newer stuff doesn't look as good to me - the designs of his newer micro pieces looked underwhelming to me, and that thin frit above looks like a second...), but it really doesn't excuse his attitude...

The dude actually accused me of trying to destroy his business...

Yeah, you know, us glass collectors, we love a bit if business destruction every now and then

Reminds me of something that I heard Adam Savage say the other day:
(Paraphrasing)
If you're a creative person, you have a new/novel technique, and someone asks you how to do it, SHARE.
You aren't you're technique, you bring so much more to the table.
Secret techniques kill creative industries, be confident in your own artistry, and share...

I don't get how he can be so friggin overprotective of the design if his Frits, when they are just a modification of already existing scientific filters...
Meh... Water under the bridge now.

Yes he was quite the dickhead to me when I asked him about a custom piece. He basically yelled at me and said no and to stop wasting his time. This is when the first dg's came out and all I wanted to have him do was make the can bigger above the fritt. Then a few months later I see him release a new can basically exactly how I described it. Lol

I recently purchased a micron dg(by recently I really mean in early April) from aqua lab tech. Got it on the small 15% discount and let me tell you guys, not so great experience. I think because there was a sale and partly the fact I am on east coast these "professionals" figured they could pass off a second.

This was my 1st "high end" piece and spending 300$ on something like glass on the internet was very nerve wracking. My advice, pay a little extra and go to your local glass shop.

They sent me what was obviously a second. TONS of bubbles throughout the piece. If you're buying a DG the only bubbles you should be looking for are the ones stacking. Not all over the mouth piece, all over the base, and a good amount on the bulb. There was a black blemish on the bulb, shit when I first opened the package it looked like there was a piece of frit stuck on the bulb too(it eventually washed off but at 1st glance it looked like a piece of frit was fused into the bulb).

I sent it back.

ALT never did refund me the money for return ground shipping like they say on their return policy. But they did send me a decent piece 2nd go around. The difference? Night and day. Only imperfection is a slightly off centered glass joint which I actually prefer because it easier for me to pull my Enano gong to clear it.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Looking back I should have just went to my local glass shop, payed a little extra and all the problems I experienced would have never came up.

BUT I will say, I love my little rooster. All the bubbles and the style of perc are amazing. I can take monster rips with my nano(green screen dabs) and LOL at how smooth it is. Like breathing in air.

I'm am very glad I got to experience the rooster but like a lot of people have mentioned, customer service is crap. David doesn't even come to these forums anymore, this dead thread is evidence of that. His site is horrendous! When he has a sale for his seconds they are stupidly high prices for shitty pieces that he or a learner fucked up on. Ummm nty. Especially when there are tons of amazing American glass blowers willing to sell you their perfect art for the same price or much cheaper. The quality is definitely going down and the price doesn't reflect that.

All in all, love my rooster, making tons of memories, but i should have got a möbius .

Peace, love, and :leaf:

ALT did the same thing to another FC member over in Europe during their most recent 420 sale. They sent him a Mobius bubbler with a VERY crooked mouthpiece (like really, really noticeably not straight).

Interestingly he went though Mobius and they had him smash the glass on video to prove he destroyed it then sent him a new one.

Team NO SLEEP!
Sux to read of these experiences. IMO there are far too many reputable blowers and dealers out there to deal with this snobbery and offensive customer service from DG.

It befuddles me, with all the options in the marketplace, why anyone would send money and support this seemingly bad person.

That's capitalism for you. As long as the quality of product is there, there will be people willing to buy. Once the quality crashes (as reportedly seems to be happening) people will move their money elsewhere. Doesn't really matter ultimately if dude's a dick. If someone sees a great piece in a shop or online, and they can afford it, chances are they will snap it up.

Attitude and customer service are important. It's what's kept me with one vape for... god, 2-3 years now? But it's not everything in a market.

I still have no fucking idea why the "jim dandy" was 1000, they might have tried to pull a fast one because it was one of the original 65mm discs. but before it even came on ALT a guy i know on instagram had gotten a 65mm red frit from NVS for 550. So yea its weird.

This one VapeNstone looks to me like a 65mm disc, becasue the tube doesn't come back inward near the frit like the vase shaped 50mm frit tubes. I could be wrong but it just looks from the pic like the bigger discs. They have been going for 500 dollars retail now (more for more color/design in the frit I guess) since aqua lab has updated them and they are also in local headshops around.

---

As far as cleaning the frit I still don't get the people who say it is hard or have any trouble...

if you are having any trouble with abrasives or the frit being clogged, try Heating up your iso for 10 seconds (no more) and throwing it in there... it will dissolve that reclaim/resin so fast your head will spin.
I've had my fritted disc since I started this thread and it's only been clogged to the point that the hit was becoming more draggy one time, and I hadn't cleaned it in like 2-3 weeks.

It takes me less than 2 minutes of shaking to get my frit clean, then a quick simple green rinse/wash to keep it sparkling.

I know this was an old post but I just got a David Goldstein mini and I'm having trouble unclogging my frits. His website says to use acetone but I'd much rather prefer your method of heating up the iso. What do you mean by a green rinse?
