Perhaps the lighter is better...perhaps the company adjusts the lighter to the best flame length...perhaps I'm just out of my mind.

I don't think the brand of lighter matters much, but for sure the total heat output (flame length) is an important factor. It adds to what I think is the biggest part of the learning curve here, guys are too shy about heat at first. Once you push it past where you want to run you get a feel for how aggressive you can be and still stay under the mark. Combustion is easy to avoid I think, but guys suffer needlessly through thin vapor.

I use the mouth of the VM as a gauge of length. There are basically two flames, I set the longer (thinner) of the two to the diameter of the mouth. That is base of the lighter on one side, the tip of the outer blue would be about 1.5 inches out at the other side of the rim. This tune varies some with temperature and fill level, but it's easy enough to check if the light is low enough (hard to see the outer flame in bright light).

BTW, I assume everyone knows the control valve is typically around the fill hole on these guys? A thin screwdriver or even a knife blade works fine to adjust.

By all means experiment with blocking the holes (although I recommend tape, less chance of problems) but after doing so I came back to 'as designed'.

As to why VM is such a secret, I suspect it's because the money's on stuff mass produced in China?

I get what you're saying about applying the heat but, honestly, the process is far more "effortless" now than with the previous VM/lighter. I played with the flame on that lighter and just never hit the sweet spot. As an example, it would take 3-4 applications of heat, 5-6 seconds per application, to even get a wisp of vapor. Now, 2 applications of 4-5 seconds and things are rolling. And all following applications take 4-5 seconds (longer than that and I'm heading into heavy cloud territory)., where it would be 6-7 seconds per application to keep the train moving with the previous lighter.

Of course, everything I just typed substantiates what you've already said! We need to get our flame properly adjusted and then this bad boy delivers big-time. That's why I decided that maybe @vapman were tweaking their privately branded lighters before sending them out.

And, it's post Zombie Apocalypse or post-EMP strike friendly!

Hahahhaaa! EMP proof baby!!!

They should seriously use that on their website!

That's aweosme. Hahahhaaaaa

Now, without getting into one of my lengthy (hopefully not so boring) posts, I just have to say that this is the best designed, coolest-looking, finest-made, bad ass piece of machinery ever freaking invented!

Pros - not in any logical order:

- The price is right!
- it's beautiful
- off the grid friendly
- butane is never near your face (watch your fingers though)
- lighter is never near your face (seriously, watch your fingers)
- uses very little herb
- it has a very nice Ritual when you use it
- the inventor is super cool and helpful to everyone
- it has that super cool Steam Punk look and feel
- it's the ONLY vape you will sit and caress and look at for a few minutes after you us it. - we all do!
- And, it's post Zombie Apocalypse AND post-EMP strike friendly!

Well, popped into my LHS and they had a couple of Vapmans as testers to see if they wanted to stock them. Needless to say I grabbed myself a basic (whoops!). Had my first few yes runs yesterday and first impressions are good, very good.

Ill be sure to report back after having it for a few days or so.

Dave,

I'm glad you got your new Vapman!

Look up OF's old posts with his excellent tips. Especially his mantra: "Don't be shy with the heat."

If you put in the time to learn how to use it, I'm sure you're going to love it as much as we all do.

Look up my old posts on charring the Vapman Pure and see you like that as well. (But that is not for everyone).

Had been looking at these for a while and was fortunate enough to grab one from a fellow FC'er on the classifieds.

Still getting the hang of it, but am loving it very much! MFLB has been my portable for a few years, and will still have its place for stealth - but VM has already become 1st choice for out in the woods, or on the water.

Many thanks to all you regular posters for all of the great info and tips in this thread. Was able to read through while deciding on my purchase and waiting for it to get here. Really can't thank all of you enough!! You made what could have been a daunting learning curve a simple application of all of the good info here.

@utekai ... really enjoyed your post on previous page. Full of good info all in one place. Thank you! Definitely don't want to derail on my first post in the thread, but you should check out the nano thread for home (plug in) use if efficiency and flavor are your thing. Have tried more than a few vapes myself and it still amazes me after more than a year as my daily driver. Sorry for off-topic! Just trying to give back a little.

I'm just on my second read through this thread. The charting thing was great, if I had more than one I'd def give it a go.

What's the general consensus for treating the basic? The inside of mine has started charring (I'm really not bothered about a bit of wood smoke, off gassing in electronic vapes scares me but with hardwood I almost enjoy it) but on the outer edge, stem, and outer inside edge? Is it neccessary to sand and oil?

I love this cape because its a tangible analogue product. Very satisfying workmanship and functions very well. Can't wait to get to know it better.

Peace

Are you really going to make me spend more money?! It looks like a shrunken satellite and I might need it.
And I agree with OF ...... you should really check out the Vapman!

Yeah, check it out:

It's got that 'Steampunk thing' wall to wall. That's Pear wood (of all things), Mica, Gold plated parts, bitty screws, hand made Swiss stuff. They make those little chocolates that look like money and don't take sides you know. Works amazingly well as well.

Bottom line is it's well made, fun to use, very efficient, tiny, fun construction and a real trip to get loaded and waste time checking out. Over and over and over. You might poke around the web some, there's a neat video of the guys making them and one of a guy with a fun accent using it in the backyard.

And EU made.

Highly recommended as the saying goes.

Do they make a water adapter for it or is it only dry?
I guess I can mill a piece of UHMW to replace the mouth piece with a 18mm or 14mm male end.
Why limit your market?

Not that I know of, at least they don't claim they did.

It turns out there's a usable fit if you pull the MP out. The top part is the same diameter (give or take) as the Solo stem so it fits OK in the 14mm connectors. I was too chicken to heat in place, but that's probably possible as well. Heating it normally then putting it on the WT upside down (you normally hit is sideways anyway) works fine.......although IMO really isn't in the spirit of VM.

Might as well order one now, you know yer gonna.......

My glass collection is growing so large.
(my wife say's: "you have more stuff than a smoke shop"!)
I guess I could retro fit the VAPEMAN to work as well as my SOLO does.

Walnut. I think Walnut would be good for you. Maybe a Hawthorne or Ebony stem?

I know other members have oiled theirs - I must admit I haven't bothered. I think those that have, have tended to use linseed oil - as that's what's used on the classic model.

I'm really glad you're enjoying getting to know your Vapman - I've had mine almost a year now - and I am still in awe of it!

I used plain old Virgin Olive Oil on mine because I oiled the inside of the wooden ring and the base of the mouth piece and I figured that Olive Oil is edible — Some oil burns off the first two or three times after oiling.

I oil it every three weeks or so, but only on the outside after I charred it.

I really don't think the Pure/Basic needs charring or oil, but I just like tinkering with stuff. :)

Toothpick, or not toothpick, that is the question...

With the basic VM and the Honest torch, I had a strong preference for three toothpicks. With the walnut and the new torch, I prefer none. In fact, I really dislike 3 toothpicks because it is like drawing on a thick milkshake. It's interesting to me that I can have such different reactions between the two.

Now, since I haven't posted a stupid question in a while, i have to get back on that horse. When I got the new VM, the first few sessions hit remarkably hard. As the days passed and I continued to use it exclusively, the effect seemed to diminish a bit. Last night, I opted for the PnP. It had been losing effect as I used it exclusively. Last night, it hit astonishingly hard after a hiatus of a week or two. It doesn't make sense to me that one would habituate to a specific device but that's the sense I get. I don't think it's all in my head because the difference is so stark and because I had no expectation that switching would alter the experience (quite the opposite, in fact). Anyone else experienced anything like this?

I can't say I have experienced that, but I have a theory anyway. (And anyone can have a theory, right?)

[please, someone smarter correct me here:] Could it be that each Vape heats differently enough that it delivers a certain soup of chemicals, making this the vape's "chemical signature" – you might say.

So the MFLB delivers his chem stew for a while, and your brain receptors get bored with it...

Then you get a hard on for the PnP – brain gets the bored with that...

Then it's the Vapman's turn...

Then you go back to the MFLB and – Wow! Why is it hitting so hard! I thought this one bored me already?

But it's like landing a date with the high school Cheerleader! You know, the you "just knew" secretly had the hots for you, but didn't rape you because of peer pressure? And now she wants to bang you because she THINKS you have a ton of ca$h now, which you don't – but I digress... Where we're we?

Ah yes! Chem-Soup – That's my theory.

It has been discussed in several threads, using different devices has mildly the same effects as switching strains- and can work wonders in battling tolerances.

Variety is the spice of life.:D

Thank you for distilling my rambling into a short, simple, yet very intelligible post.

That's exactly what it sounded in my head at first! Haha.

Seriously, thanks! :)
