I go where the thrills are
The solo bowl does get hot from conduction, but it don't think it is nearly hot enough to produce vapor. That only seems to happen when I draw heated air through the stem. Therefore, I'd say that the bulk of vapor production is due to convection.

As to taste, I've never achieved better taste with my firefly than my solo. At best, they are equal, but results with the solo are consistently good so, on average, the solo gives better results. I've yet to spoil a bowl with my solo before it was spent. With my firefly, if I (or, usually, my wife) wasn't careful, it'd get scorched, and the popcorn taste would taint the entire contents of the bowl. In fact, my firefly currently smells of it, but I'm too lazy to clean it.

In my opinion, especially given the massive price difference, a solo is a much better first machine than a firefly. I think this will provide a more positive experience for most people, will save them money and hassle. I wish someone would have told me that before I bought my firefly, but I was seduced by all the talk about "the flavor", etc., by prolific and experienced posters.
.

I agree the Solo is the best choice for a first vape, and I wish I had a dollar for every time I've espoused this opinion here and in the Solo thread. It has virtually no learning curve.

As to conduction vs convection...seems like no two folks agree on the Solo, or there are certainly a tone of differing opinions on how much of its "hybrid" is convection vs. conduction. For me, it's far from pure convection so I find it worth making a distinction.

Back OT though, flavor is obviously a matter of taste. The FF provides the most transparent, unaltered flavor of any of the 7 or 8 devices I've used over the years. To me if your material tastes good, the FF is a dream. If your material is not tasty, it's more of a nightmare. Easy fix for that problem.

There is a very simple way to test this. Load a stem, turn your Solo on to desired temperature, and let it sit for 12 minutes until the auto-shutoff turns it off. Then empty your stem and take a look at the herb's condition.

You might be surprised by the results you find.

I've done this. Some, but not all, of the material gets cooked. This has led me to believe there's plenty of conduction. Nothing like the VB2 which will reduce material to damn near ash without active drawing, but still plenty of cooking. It also throws plenty of odor just sitting there, which leads me to think vapor production is occurring.

Of course, I know from your past posts that you characterize this as "radiation", not "conduction". Still isn't pure convection, in my experience anyway.

Back OT before I get in trouble...FF says they are making some new announcement in the next day or so, and are urging folks to sign up for their email list to make sure we don't miss whatever the news is. I'm sure it's not all that exciting.

Can you let us know what email list and where was this announced?

Floating on.
Sorry, brother, but I could not disagree more. I think the FF's flavor is actually underrated, and should be considered by all flavor-chasers as a superior option to even the Solo (even when used hamster style). IMO

The flavor of the FF is what keeps me coming back to it. I reach for it more often than my Solo, and just as often as my HI, to get my flavor fix. Flavor is crazy important to me, and as soon as it's gone, I find it difficult to enjoy the herb whatsoever anymore. The FF helps me to get as much of that fantastic flavor as is possible with an electric portable, and that is the reason I would buy another FF if mine were lost.

The FF has many outstanding features, yes, but to me, its flavor profile / signature is what ultimately makes it so luxurious.

But to each their own. This thread has certainly shown there's more than one way to appreciate a Firefly!

:2c:

I completely respect that. Having only tried two vaporizers, I'm definitely not an authority on flavor. There are just so many things I enjoy about the FF that flavor is not on the top of my list, nor was it a top priority for me. Perhaps if I had more to compare it to, I would truly see how good the flavor is. For now, I suppose I'll consider myself lucky I got such a tasty vape right off the bat :)

And I shall also consider myself lucky to have a Firefly!

I will add my voice to those who prefer the flavor from the Solo over the Firefly. Like others have mentioned, I have also had charred bits ruin the flavor of the whole bowl in the Firefly. Never happened to me in the Solo. Even without that, I seem to get more "pure" flavor for a longer time in the Solo.

I will also agree with those who believe the Solo is a better first vape. So easy to use, and it just PUMPS out vapor.

To me the Firefly is just faster, more fun, and more "sexy" :) I prefer the "on demand" nature of the Firefly over the Solo also.

I was recently out of commission for a few weeks after surgery (abdomen/groin, not serious). When my medical needs were more urgent I reached for the Solo every time. When I was feeling better I went back to the Firefly.

olfos

that´s no smoke....it´s called vapor
It finally arrived in my hands - on my lips! I guess it is love! I don´t have the time right now to go into details.
My silver FF looks like a good old something right out the fifties.

If I have to compare it to my other loves (solo, Vaporbrothers, MLFB, vaporgenie) it takes the pros of all combined minus the negatives!
Flavour is imo even more intensed than while using the solo. (sorry for me english...but that sentence makes sense to me ;-))

The vapor is even thicker....depends on the technique of inhaling (of course). I practiced all night and was able to create big clouds without combusting the material.

Thanks to my personal hero: mynameismud - for making this possible!!!! Thanks to this forum!!!!!

I have had my Firefly for about a month, and I am enjoying it immensely. Like others have mentioned, using the Firefly is much like learning to play a musical instrument. Here is my technique for maximizing the desired herbal effect: I take a long, slow inhale, and just before my lungs are maxed out I pull away and finish the hit with some room air. I hold the vapor in as long as possible, then exhale a little bit through my nose, and then inhale some air, hold it, exhale a bit of vapor, then inhale some air again. I can do this about 5 times before all of the vapor is expelled from my lungs out through my nose. This method allows more of the THC to be absorbed by the 700 million alveoli in your lungs, which results in more total "impact". And, by exhaling slowly out through your nose, you further enhance your experience by allowing the mucous membranes in your nasal passage to assimilate the last vestiges of your hit.

Does anyone know what the big announcement is that they mentioned on Facebook? I signed up for the mailing list but haven't seen anything yet. I was planning on ordering a firefly in the next couple days but if it's something big like updating the current version or releasing new colors etc I might wait. The announcement was supposed to be yesterday

Where'd you see this? Did you get a mail? I didn't get one on either of my addresses and their FB page doesn't mention it...but great news in any event.

I was hoping someone would try and report on this, eventually!

Thanks for the info!

I ended up buying the REVITALIZING blend on the MFLB website. I think it's the lavender in it that I'm not loving, but the sage, peppermint and spearmint are quite spritely and grand!

Iolite & wispr screens are the same. Here's the link for vapeworld but they got in pretty every vape store.
http://www.vapeworld.com/iolite-screens

Remove the original FF screen, and put this one in, screen on top.

I tried the Iolite 7 hole Wispr screens and did not like them :(

They fit perfectly, and do a decent job of keeping debris from falling through to the metal plate, however they dramatically altered my Firefly experience.

I feel like the screens greatly reduced the conduction effects of the vaporizer (sorry folks but I think there's plenty of conduction at play with the Firefly). The load is now separated from the metal plate more than before. Hits were dramatically cooler, to the point where I struggled to get dense vapor. I experienced more "tunneling" with the Wispr screens than with the stock screen, even with a full bowl. It took me more hits to finish a bowl. Effects were still satisfactory, and ABV came out very even (lots of swirling hot air in the bowl).

I could see how these screens could "tame" a Firefly that's running too hot, but for me they just resulted in vapor that was too cool.

Neither of my FF's get hot enough at the bottom plate to create conduction...not even close. (Put material in the bowl and hold the heat button...does it cook? Mine doesn't.)

As for the Wispr screens, I really dig them, but I guess I could see how they could make less dense hits...though the slight additional metal seems to create a bit more thermal mass in the chamber, in my experience. I get pretty huge hits with those screens. (Throw on the top screen late in the session and huge hits are possible until the end of the bowl.)

Once again with the FF, different strokes.

EDIT: On re-reading your description, I wonder if you've tried really packing the bowl with the Wispr screen, as opposed to only filling the chamber loosely? Because what you describe is exactly what I've experienced when I don't put a critical mass of material in the bowl; although I have trouble getting big hits with too-small of a load with the stock screen or the Wispr screen, performance with the Wispr is particularly disappointing. Give it a try if you haven't...push as much material down onto the Wispr screen as you can and give it a few long button pushes and see if you don't generate some large clouds.

Is it better to order a firefly from vapeworld or directly from the firefly website or it doesn't make a difference? And are there any promotional codes available for either? Thanks!

Cashew,
Just recently bought a used Firefly after trying a friend's and I'm noticing it acts differently than my friend's in a certain way. When heating my friend's FF, the light pulses green. If the unit gets too hot, it flashes red to let you know it is getting too hot. I don't think the heater fully powers down until you actually let off the button, though. Perhaps it lowers to some temp and levels?

The one I have heats up exactly the same way, but instead of ever flashing red at some point, my light simply goes solid green at 20 seconds and the heating element powers down until I let off and repress.

I know this vape typically has a pretty steep learning curve, but is this difference typical or is something amiss?

Not really, unless they allow current owners to upgrade somehow.

I'm not looking to "upgrade" my version 1.

I'm simply glad there are going to be new options on what I consider an already fantastic vaporizer. I'm glad they're improving what I think is an already great design. Maybe I'd purchase a 2.0 if there are enough differences, I don't know.

I don't think this news is dependent on any upgrade plan that may or may not exist.
