I have a pen now and its great but I'm looking to vape my shatter a different way when at home. I always read people talking bout dab rigs but I have no idea what that is. I am confused on what a oil rig is and what I am even looking for.

I do know that I want something that will get me more ripped than my pen, can be used with all concentrates, works well with shatter and wax, needs to be small and compact, and I would prefer to not have a giant torch blowing in my living room.

I used a rig a buddies house and I was amazed and scared for my life that he was torching up in his living room, I would prefer not to have a giant torch for the sake of my animals.

what should I get? what are the basic pieces needed? Besides a pen what are my options for consuming concentrates?

Thanks!

I personally prefer the Hammer, while I've only taken residue hits and convection hits without water they haven't been too intolerable. And when new users that have oil experience use it they tend to mention how smooth of a dab that was. I recommend getting a small ss screen you can mold and put into the tiny crevice of the Hammer to collect the oil residue otherwise it will easily just go through but when used horizontally its less likely to have as much oil fall through.

Its a bit tricky without water but definitely possible when you get used to hand placement.

For true dabs you're gonna need a torch or an enail. Enails are expensive and many are prone to breaking, so probably not worth the investment if you are only doing a few dabs a day. Torches seem a little crazy at first but you get used to it. I was wary of using one at first but I've come to love the ritual. I have a friend who heats his nail with a big propane plumbers torch and that still sketches me out a bit honestly. All you need is a small(ish) chefs type torch like this: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/bonjour-reg-professional-creme-brulee-torch/1013057451

A rig is basically a glass bubbler or bong of some sort (usually set up with a male connection rather than a female one), a nail (lot of options here, ti, quartz, glass, ceramic, domed or domeless), a torch, and a dabber. Fit the nail to the glass piece, heat the nail with the torch, scoop up a dab with the dabber, drop the dab on the hot nail, inhale the vapor through the glass piece, fasten seatbelt.

Check the glass section of the board to see what's out there as far as glass pieces go. Specifically this thread for an inexpensive first piece. http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/cheap-high-quality-bubbler.5255/ It can be a bit overwhelming as there are endless options as far as rigs, nails, etc. if you do your research you should be able to put together a basic but quality setup (rig, nail, dome, dabber, etc) for <$100. Hell, could do it for half that. Alternatively, you could checkout your LHS. Expect to pay more there but it helps to see all the pieces in person and see what appeals to you.

Happy dabbing, cheers!

Like @walrus said. It can be intimidating and non MJ users around the process recoil from the torch.
Typically, the volume of the can on an oil rig is smaller than that of a combustion piece. Although I use my larger ones sometimes, mostly I use my DO20. It is a great entry- level piece and comes with dome and nail. For ONLY $30 shipped to the USA. You can't go wrong. Check the above referenced thread.

Starter rig go to your LHS, get a small 2-5 hole downstem mini bubbler style rig a la
http://www.thedablab.com/silika-she...t-showerhead-diffy-dome-nail-slide-combo-set/
-- a rig with similar shaping, I wouldn't recommend silika. See if you can get one blown by a local glass blower. Preferably removeable downstem for easy cleaning. These mini rigs are dope for a daily driver but they are gonna be a strong hit for a beginner at first, but you'll love going easier on the stash haha
EDIT: forgot to mention: if you are checking a few rigs, pull on them all, some pull better than others, and also make sure u won't be drinking any water on a hard pull

Not sure on price of silika but for a domeless most of the time I'd recommend HE- maybe the dualti in your case, although Santa Cruz Omni Nail looks great
