Im under the imperssion a domed screen pushes the load closer to the heater and extracts more efficiently. Other wise its a way to mesure my load without scale.

I was one of those of needed quite more burnoff cycles, but I did get to pure hot steel taste after 2-3 CHARGES. Both of my solos the same.

How many cycles did you do before you started vaping away?

I use the stock stems and use them stuffed full or with just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl and still get great results so I want to ask;
what do the domed screens or shorter bowl really accomplish ? what are you all just looking to improve upon ? What am I missing on this one ?

IMO doming has a huge advantage in slowing screen fouling. I dome very slightly normally (5/8 screens, perhaps 1/16 'tall'). Not really enough to lower volume of the bowl much, but enough to lift the screen off the glass enough so 3/4 of the holes in the screen aren't blocked by the glass plate. Vapor can go through the screen anywhere and then sideways across the gap to find a hole in the glass plate.

Not only can you go much longer between screen changes, but you get most of those sessions before it becomes very restricted (the holes in the glass plate dominate until the screen fouls a lot).

My advice is to try the experiment yourself. It's easy, educational, and fun.........

Hey guys. Here is a long awaited alternative to getting your hands on a Gong from PV. Very sturdy and works EXTREMELY well.
Just posted this in the DIY thread as well.

Tired of waiting to get your hands on a Solo Gong?
Here ya go.

Very clever.

You can do basically the same thing with the mouthpiece from an Omicron cart (a common enough thing in e-cigs as well). For some WTs you need to cut the top half of the MP off, for some not. It's Silicone rubber so it aids in sealing and is rated for 'vapor temperature'.......but you need to have a Omicron carts lying around, not a problem for some of us.....

For me, when I use just the bottom screen and enough flower to cover the floor of the stem, it takes a little longer to fully extract all of it. I might be crazy, I might just not notice it vaping the same, but when I use a dome screen and vape the same amount I can extract the cannabinoids much faster, in one or two hits. Maybe a little bit of heat is lost when you draw on it and it takes an extra few hits normally vs a dome screen? I use a screen on top of my stems because the taste of flower on the heating element tastes bad to me, so I don't get any tumbling/fluidization effect using very small amounts. I also happen to use a dome screen most of the time because I like shorter bowls. Having a shorter bowl for me means that the taste to session length ratio is higher, meaning it tastes better throughout the load as opposed to a full stem but I do lose half the stem size. It also means I can vape the stem faster as I don't always require a full stem, and when I do need more I have another stem just for that.

I've been using your 1-2 convection hit technique a lot since I last posted about it, I'm really liking it when I have the time and patience to pull the stem out so often  does your ABV come out lighter than if you would just normally leave the stem in? Mine is which was a little weird for a bit until I figured it must be the extra conduction of leaving the stem in that browns the material more.

BTW, after it's on (in 'idle') if you push the right button (down) for a few seconds it restores to the last level used before shutting down. It becomes almost automatic, push both buttons, let it boot up, then press the down key to set your favorite level.

holy fucking shit this changes the whole game

thanks for the tip OF, i'm sure all the OG soloists know about that one but i had no idea :)

The new PVHEGonG that my friend is using on his new Solo is so loose that he just leaves the GonG in his water piece and pops the Solo on and off it when required! There's almost no traction at all. It's been like that since day 1.

His stock stems are just 'normal' loose though. Does anyone know if the new Solo's oven's dimensions have slightly changed? Or maybe he just got a slightly 'off' GonG from PV.

Also, does anyone know which type/size 'thin' o-rings PV sells for the Solo?

TIA

Glass stems are each a little different so you will find a slight variance in size in each bowl you try.

For glass I only have 2 sets of stock stems all four are a little different in size, none will stay in the chamber if the solo is upside down.

I'm sorry your friend is not happy, but I think his expectations are off. The maker has said he doesn't consider holding the stem in when the Solo is inverted is 'right'. He specifically told us they expect a stem to fall out if you turn it upside down. I bet PV has the same policy, although they will no doubt find a tighter one.

Nor is the o-ring mod intended to make it do any more than keep the bent one from rotating.

As near as I can find the oven size is the same in both models. The finish on the inside of the cup in mine is different, and the holes bigger, but the cup and seal seem the same. The seal will loosen up with use, which is how we got to the o-rings in the first place.

Oh, he's not unhappy. In fact, he's in love with his new Solo. I'm just worried he's going to break his GonG before he gets a thin o-ring in there. It's much looser than the GonG in my 1+ year old Solo without an o-ring. Thanks for the information regarding the oven!

I can guarantee he will break it sooner or later if he counts on lifting the Solo and having it go with it every time. O-ring or not. If he wants to lift it, best to use the ears provided and do so deliberately I think.

Best wishes.

He's new to the Solo, but a seasoned vaporist, so I don't worry about him so much. But his wife and some of his friends are quite new to it all. Actually, they've both started reading FC, so I'll probably get in trouble now.

Edit: 'Ears'. I like that. I've been unimaginatively calling them 'bumps' till now.

I place a 5/8th" screen at the base of the Solo's heating element. My reasoning, and I admit, it could be flawed, is that it elevates a standard tube a touch so that air flow might be increased. As an additional benefit, it keeps the heating element clean and provides some blockage from material entering the air intake holes.

I recall another guy who had the same general thought. IIRC he came to like coarse screen (biggest gaps?) and 1/2 inch (so it would lay flat?).

There was also a fellow that made a few thin SS discs with dimples to hold them off the bottom, Stu kindly sent me one. I thought they all had some merit, but came to like the simple joy of filling the stem and sipping away with no further worry. I like the way the slightly domed 5/8s stay put and run a long time before fouling out.

Call me shallow if you must......

its definitely true that the slight dome screen helps. i still prefer to keep my screen pushed down from the top of the stem to 3/4 of the way down, and i scrape out the entire bowl regularly. i have been doing this for as long as i've had my stock stems and it's never given me a problem.

Do the holes on the bottom of the Solo help with airflow, or just the holes on top? I ask because I'm still doing things minus one opposable thumb, and it's easier for me to keep the bottom placed firmly in my lap at the moment. :)

What's the best way to charge the Solo when I get it? Full charge. But after that, let it drop to a certain percentage then recharge to full or?

I could be wrong, but I think any airflow to the chamber is supplied by the holes in the top of the unit. the bottom holes probably help cooling while charging. Yeah, I'm guessing.

Thanks! Maybe someone can confirm that? :)

Just wanted to confirm the rumors. Randy @ Puffitup is amazing. Very fast response and above and beyond for customer service. He did a good thing for someone who needed it :) It's nice to know that in this day and age good people are out there. Thanks everybody here who pointed me in the right direction. I can't wait to get my Solo!! :)

Best battery life probably comes from running it down until there are no LEDs lit for the first time, then do one more session (no more, deep discharges are bad). Then charge until the number 7 LED is lit (but the charge LED is still flashing). This takes maybe a session per charge off but doubles, triples or more the total number of charge cycles you can expect (from say 300 to 600, a thousand or more). This class of battery degrades all by itself just sitting at full charge (the reason it doesn't come fully charged to you). Avoiding the top 10% doubles the lifespan, another 10% (to 20 total) doubles it again.

So 'leaving it plugged in all the time so it's fully charged and ready to go is probably the worst thing you can do?

Thanks! Maybe someone can confirm that? :)

Consider it confirmed, Lady, the man is wise and telling it straight (at least this time). Vents for cooling the electronics and slowing the heat spread down from the oven. No effect on the draw at all, tape up the vents for a few hits and see for yourself if you want.

Stop worrying about it, enjoy the Solo. Close your eyes, repeat after me......

Thank you! Not worrying at all. Just making sure. It's extremely difficult for me to do just about anything nowadays, so I need all the help I can get! :)
