Although my Solo has never been dropped or abused in any way, nor have I ever tried to squeeze in O-rings below the cap, I had the unfortunate experience of finding the baseplate on both of my Solos having cracks around the four screws. My guess is that the technician got a little over-zealous when they were assembled and over-tightened the screws.

A couple of folks had sent me PMs asking about what screws I used to replace the OEM ones on the bottom of my Solo. So I thought I would post here so all can benefit.

Here are a couple of pics taken through my my 10x jeweler's loupe showing the cracks around the screws:

So I went to my local Ace Hardware store and bought the following:

- Panhead Machine Screw, 2mm x 8mm, p/n 4306, 25 cents each.
- Flat Washer, 2mm, p/n 4298, 17 cents each.

The new screws and washers help alleviate some of the stress that was induced by the original screws. The new screws went in nice and snug with little effort.

I've used these for more than 2 years to reduce load size and enhance the flavor profile.

Be creative!

Do a search on ebay: glass filter screens or just google

Are those the Atmos Raw RX glass screens? If not, does anyone know if the Atmos screens fit nicely in the Solo bowls? Also, how many screens does it take to fill an empty bowl? I'm guessing about 5...

A little single sample fact. The single oem stem from pui I have seen is considerably deeper than the pv ones. A 3/4" screen cuts my pv oem bowl in half, 1/3 in the pui oem stem. Others have noticed the same?

A solution often repeated to reduce bowl size is the domed screen. My version of it is the flat domed screen.

Here is a 3/4" screen flat domed pv oem stem.

If anyone has a link to SOFT 1" screen, let me know please. I down 2 orders from ebay and they are much harder and very difficult to shape. The 3/4" ones and 5/8" ones are soft and easyly formed on the back end of a big pen.

Anyways

Thank you for posting this! Do they still sit nice and flat on a table?

Hey guys, just made an account here cause I have a few questions. So I've decided I want to switch over to vaping, and it looks like I've narrowed it down to either MFLB or Solo (leaning to Solo way more however) but I have a few concerns. I've kind of been going through random pages here and there on this thread and I'd like to know if it's safe to buy from Vapor Nation. Is the latest model safe? I don't want any health concerns such as burning plastic, flaking ceramic issues, or anything of the kind, other wise I'll stick to pipes and joints versus burning plastic fumes. Thank you! Hopefully I'll switch to vaping if I get enough info.

Yes the solo is safe. Ceramic solos are long long gone. Most popular low priced sellers go through alot of stock, so its actually hard to get old stock.

How much is vapor nation charging you? Thread favorite is puffitup.com for their great service; can even price match ebay sellers.

@hd_rider

Think this first one would work good?:

M2x6.h13.jpg

Has a nice wide flat head (4.38mm head) so no washers needed

EDIT: NVM, just check and the thread pattern used on the solo is course not machine screw

I use the stock stems and use them stuffed full or with just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl and still get great results so I want to ask;
what do the domed screens or shorter bowl really accomplish ? what are you all just looking to improve upon ? What am I missing on this one ?

Oh okay, the ceramic issue made me worry a bit too, that's good to know. Should I be worried about any plastic smells/heat against the body issues at all, because I've came across some posts that brought such issues up and don't want to spend ~140$ to end up sending back the Solo constantly. I believe Vapor Nation matches prices, so I was going to show them a site where I saw it for $126.99 (vapor sellers.com) but if puffitup.com would match, then you suggest I go through them?

@Vicki My current solution:

It's a dessert jar from a local bakery. The panna cotta it previously contained was delicious!

I like that! I was using a ceramic cup about that size for the same purpose until I got that handy stand from @Pipes

I'll try to get a picture of it in a little bit. It was really not the best way to do it, and I'm glad I have a better solution now.

They just help with the conservation of your weed .
It creates a smaller bowl , and prevents bits of herbs going up the stems too .

We all can't be High Rollers like yourself .;)

Yes puffitup is the best! And no dont worry about the smell issues that happened along time ago. Your good to go, the solo is an amazing vaporizer and from many what many past MFLB owners say is superior in every regard other than stealth factor. Just do the burn off (search if you dont already know) and you will have a great time!

@OF any idea what kind of screw the solo uses? I know I could do your washer trick but I kinda wanted to try some new black screws with large flat head

Thanks a lot, the info you guys are providing is definitely helping! I've read bout the burn-offs, but there's been mixed posts, how many cycles on temp 7 would you suggest, and do I need to do any wiping off the body or just burn off and begin?

I'm doing the same as you.
The reducing of the load may work for some however I find the Stock load size perfect.
The glass disc still holds more than a shorty.
I do this more for the flavor obtain.

Yeah, they're SAE near as I can tell. Number 0 sheet metal screws from Macmaster Carr is what I used for a similar project (I was making a permanently attached base with right angle connector) that needed longer screws. For what you're doing the stock screws work just fine if you pick your washer right. Again, M/C sells the right size SS ones for this. There's a photo of this and the part numbers drifting around.

I think Pipes sells a kit as well?

One thing you'll face is the metal screws now sit proud. They can catch on things and scratch stuff up. I've used 1/16 inch (you might need more if your washers or screw heads are thicker) neoprene gasket material (self adhesive). I've also had good luck with stick on felt. In the rubber case I notched the corners but the felt runs over them leaving four little felt feet.

When preventing or repairing the Solo base plate problem, one could also add little rubber-bumper feet.

There are mixed posts , because we're all different .
Some are more sensitive than others .
I did 2 burn offs at level 7 , and it was good to go .

You don't need to wipe the body , but some have used a damp
q-tip/iso to wipe the oven chamber . Hold it upside down , so
you don't drip any iso into the 4 holes .

Wow , you've done some reading/research . Good on ya .
So what do we need to do , to put you behind the wheels
of a Solo , today ? :brow:
