hmm.. do those fumes have an effect on the sinus thing?

(majorly offtopic :p sorry)

Nope, not nearly running the 3D printers as often as when I've got a big project (like 3D printing a bunch of parts to build a new printer). I usually only run for 4-5 hours once or twice a week.

The fumes from printing the biodegradeable plastic made from corn are much more pleasing - almost smells like maple syrup when printing!

No headaches for me :)

Does anyone know any easy way to get rid of charring on the maple? A friend got crazy with the torch!

Nope, don't have a hammer nor have I used one. What kind of butane are you using in your torch?...

...It's a mold/moderate headache, nothing like a migrane, but enough that it's starting to get annoying.

I am using Iolite butane, I don't notice any smell or fumes at all with the Honest/Lotus combination, but the Hammer is far more noticeable to me and does give me a headache when using somewhere without proper ventilation.

Yeah, I'm going to try expirementing with some higher quality butane and see how that does. Been vaping all evening outdoors, and haven't had the same headache I've experienced recently after several sessions back to back with the Lotus

It's definitely looking related to the butane. Oh well. Just another excuse to buy some higher quality butane and a new plug-in vape (nano) to use in my Lab

guys, what's the headache got to do with the butane, i don't understand? i thought the Lotus bypasses the butane thing because the air path is from below the cap, no?

i also have a theory that sometimes the prolonged heat from a vaporizer is an 'underated' negative, especially longish hits for people who seem to be more 'heat' sensitive. unfortunately i do not have enough experience and research to give a final conclusion. from an eastern point of view, too much concentrated heat can imbalance the body's "yin & yang". personally i have experienced pain/headache behind my ears around the back of head when i feel heaty (or dehydrated) and still take longish hits.

Not much butane escapes a torch's flame... I find it hard to relate the headache with the butane. Never had this issue with the Lotus even with prolonged sessions inside while I did experience it with my old VG.

This is exactly right. The only butane that escapes into the air is whatever is lost as you light your torch. This is usually an extremely small amount, if any. @Ratchett, there's a simple experiment you can do. Simply blow out the flame on your lighter and let a couple of seconds of butane escape. Go ahead, inhale it. Butane isn't toxic or dangerous in small amounts. (You can and should look this up.) Do you get a headache?

I'm going to try this when I go home. I believe it's a cumulative effect. This morning I had a brief pre-work session (3 small loads in under an hour). The first two sessions were fine, but by the third, I could feel a tinge of a similar headache forming. This was done in my living room with only one window open about 2 meters away from me (no breeze). Yet yesterday when I avoided using the Lotus indoors for the whole evening, not a single problem.

Maybe I'm more sensitive to it? It doesn't seem that one or two quick sessions with the Lotus are causing the headache, it's moreso on weekends when I'm vaping more frequently.

Also note, I don't like my Lotus sitting directly in my D020 with a reducer. I've got a custom angled 18mm to 14mm reducer from OregeonGlass - it's angled only 15 degrees, but maybe that has an impact on how much butane is getting inhaled as oposed to those who use their Lotus sitting fully upright?

Either way, I'll try to do some further research into the subject and report back with my findings.

------------------

Switching gears slightly. Yesterday I grew tired of my bent spare cap which I installed after cracking my first plate. I had a suspicion that the dent in the plate was causing one area of the load to always vape faster and hotter than the rest.

So I installed the new updated plate on my Lotus. WOW! I'm loving it - more even heating of the load, and it seems to take a bit longer to heat up than the old design. But I'm liking it so far.

The D020 is a very good unit for Thursday's!

Salutations,

That butane concern seems persistant, so would it help to move away a flame before it's extinguished. Well, maybe it would i think.

Tried a test yesterday which i extinguished the flame on my torch and inhaled some of the butane - not an instant effect, but about 20 minutes later I did have a faint headache. I want to run that test again sometime this weekend to confirm it really is the butane.

I suspect I'm inhaling some of the butane through my nose while I'm preheating the cap (I have my lips on my bubbler, so I inhale through my nose before I start drawing on the bubbler)

I'll keep you guys posted on what I figure out.

I find this a cumulative effect - usually only notice it later in the evening/weekends when I've already done several sessions with the vape. I thought it might have been an effect of simply vaping too much, but after reading about the butane headaches, I'm wondering if that's my problem.

It's a mold/moderate headache, nothing like a migrane, but enough that it's starting to get annoying.
How long and how often are the sessions that give you headaches?

Sessions usually lasting longer than 30 or 40 minutes (probably about 4 loads, 5-10 minutes between loads) are when I usually start to feel the effects. However, as stated, when I inhaled butane directly, the headache was not immediate. Also note, I don't believe I'm using the lotus correctly, I have my cap + WPA angled 15 degrees, this could have have an impact

I only recently realized the butane might be the cause of my recent headaches while vaping. I'm going to try recreating the conditions I was experiencing now that I'm looking for it. (I've been careful to avoid any sessions in the house since discovering a possible correlation). I've got a long 3 day weekend full of research, for SCIENCE! :science:

Once I get a baseline for conditions, I'll start the process of changing as few variables as possible to determine a solution. One of which is to try switching butane to a more refined premium butane.

Thank you all for your concern

Does anybody know which j hook mendo is offering on their site? It seems that the one in the j hook kit is different than the one pictured to be included in the duel stem kit. Are they kit specific? Because I prefer the grav labs j hook if I was able to have the option to choose.

I'm going to be able to pull the trigger in two weeks time, I can't wait !

We sell only the Grav Lab j hook. If another was in a photo, it was an error.

@Ratchett is it just one sample that gives you headaches?

Don't believe so. But again, the headaches were mild, now that i've been paying closer attention to avoiding butane inhalation, I haven't yet been able to fully recreate the sensation yet, but the weekend is still young. A single extended session isn't going to stop me from experimenting.

Dabs are vapor too!
I want to try an ash catcher with J hook combo for the Lotus, thinking the better line of sight and clear tubes will help me learn better technique. I know this one fits the hot plate:
1.0x0.jpg

thanks to @jambandphan03's video.

Does anyone know if this will fit without adapters?

Or this one?

Should they all hit about the same?

You will need a 14mm connection to connect to the GRAV j-hook from MT. I have the Ash catcher in the second link (honeycomb turbine). The turbine action is hardly visible, you really can only see it with an overhead view. Also note, the Lotus cap does NOT fit into the female end of that turbine AC because the cap is too wide. You would need a male to female extension. Also note, that AC is quite tall (the turbine one) - you would not see the hot plate while using the torch (you'd be heating blind so to speak).

I wasn't thrilled with that setup (I can take a picture if you'd like).

I would suggest this AC instead (NOTE - I don't have this AC, but I thought I saw someone else who did and used it with a j-hook)

Haven't several folks also suggested that frits tend to be flavor robbers? I know one of the things I like best about the Lotus is the taste, and I am trying to be careful that I don't do anything that reduces it too much. One of my reasons for going with the 20-T rather than the full HC.
