Just ordered one yesterday. Can't wait ! Will post experience asap.

Great news and choice IMO. Good to meet you, welcome to the fun.

Looks to me like Solo may be your second best smoking decision of this life.....right after dumping cigarettes? Vaping weed, as you know, not only lets you enjoy the herb more and save a pile of money (like say 2/3 of your current weed bill) but you get to live longer to enjoy it all the more. Good combo, that.
Well done!

I just got a Solo. The instructions say that it cannot be used while charging. Does that mean I did not get the latest model?

I was able to use while plugged.

There was a bad smell, so I let it run at maximum for a bit. Seems better now, but I decided to use my firefly tonight and try again tomorrow.

Thanks so much !! Yes I dumped cigs , got into vaping wax with my Vhit type C ( love it, so simple, so elegant), also have a Glacier which aint too bad. Got em on eGo's v3 multi-voltage digital battery. I'm using an Aerotank Mega (3.8ml) for my e-liquid which is %100 organic and VG, available at http://www.virginvapor.com .

Again, thanks for the warm welcome ! :)

When I talked to the dealer, he said the 2014 model could be used while charging. Elsewhere I've read there is a separate charge cord for pass-thru ? I'd like to hear your thoughts, did you use the DC wall converter ?

Also : I was also told by dealer some models have been reported as bad smell on 1st use, and, as nu11ington said, they recommend a pre-burn off at high temp until smell dissipates .

Keep reporting ! Mine's coming Thursday ! :)

There are basically two different kinds of Solos, and lots of model numbers that don't mean anything to us (please refer to signature). The "old" Solo does not have the charge-and-use function. I have this model, and I have to use a separate cable to use it in power adapter mode. The cable that came with it only charges the battery. The "new" Solo has slightly larger air holes in the stainless steel bowl and you can now charge it while you use it, effectively killing the need for two cables.

I also never noticed a smell on my unit, I smelled it a bit and took the cap off and everything. Nothing but the "electronics in packaging" smell that aired out after a few minutes. I still did a few burn-offs anyways just to be sure.

Yeah do a burn off at heat 7 for two 12 minute sessions

Really ? 12 mins 2x on 7 ? Okay if ya say so.... :) thx for the tip.

Can
With all the praise about the Solo there's one aspect that really puts me off and I rarely hear it addressed: it can't do low temps runs! Don't you guyz miss this ability?

From Arizer website:
  • Level 1-50°C / 122°F (15 sec)
  • Level 2-185°C / 365°F (1 min)
Meaning on level 1 you can only decarb or dry buds, and on level 2 it's already super thick and you cook most of the fine terps and flavs. If I start my Ascent at 185°C the taste is somewhat altered and the vapor is more irritating. For many of my strains having delicate tastes (ex: Pineapple/tropical fruits in C99, or some menthol-like compounds for instance in others) if I don't start between 170-173°C, most of the fine taste details are "lost in translation"! Heck I even vape at 160°C sometimes...

What's your take on that point? That and the draw resistance are still show stoppers for me with this device. Sorry if this has been discussed before, but let's be honnest, at this point nobody will ever care to read 1000 pages of back-log....(and it's a problem overall with this forum, past some point threads are just useless (impractical), and people have to repeat more and more the same things until they get bored and stop answering noob's questions altogether...)

Can anyone get me a list of the complete list of temps/settings in Farenheit (F) ? Thx.

Hey vakers !

Hey, sorry to bother y'all, but I found the temp list (derp, on the main site). So, thinking people might not have this yet, I"m posting it.

  • Level 1-50°C / 122°F (15 sec)
  • Level 2-185°C / 365°F (1 min)
  • Level 3-190°C / 374°F (1 min 10)
  • Level 4-195°C / 383°F (1 min 30 sec)
  • Level 5-200°C / 393°F (1 min 50 sec)
  • Level 6-205°C / 401°F (2 min 10 sec)
  • Level 7-210°C / 410°F (2 min 30 sec)

Yes, my model definitely needs a burn off to eliminate the smell.

After it had charged, I tried heating it up without anything in the glass tube, just to try to get the tube inside (it being too tight when cold.). Still plugged in, FYI.

Then, I tried puffing a bit. Smelled awful! Like burning plastic or something.

Question: is this thing really convection? It looks like the glass tube gets really hot, and how about the steel plate at the bottom? If I stop puffing, won't the flower continue to cook? Do I need to remove the glass stem to stop that?

Are there some glass stems available that have a screen on the bottom to keep the flower from falling out if it's not in the unit?

See the "Temp No Draw" to see how much your flowers are cooking when a loaded stem is sitting in a heated Solo :
Code:
Step# Temp No Draw. Temp With Draw. Arizer Temp
  1. 37.8C. 52.0C. 50C
  2. 98.5C. 187.9C. 185C
  3. 108.7C. 197.1C. 190C
  4. 117.1C. 205.2C. 195C
  5. 123.9C. 214.0C. 200C
  6. 131.2C. 223.1C. 205C
  7. 140.1C. 231.0C. 210C

IMO it doesn't need to be removed, but you can if you want, to prevent (very) minor loss of vapor.
Also, taken from personal experience, the glass gets hot mainly when you are drawing (convection). It doesn't seem to get that hot when it's just sitting in the Solo (conduction), and cools down between hits.

Are there some glass stems available that have a screen on the bottom to keep the flower from falling out if it's not in the unit?
Not that I've read about, but I think for those that don't want their flowers to fall in the bottom of the unit, it's a quite common practice to simply load the stem then place a screen to keep everything inside.

As mentioned recently, you could also simply use the bent stem and use the Solo upside-down "Hamster style" :)

The solo uses both conduction and convention
You can if you like add a screen to cap the herb and keep it off the heater if you like
I also hear glass screens work well for this?

So it turned out to be a charge issue at the House I was staying in. It was strange as I had stayed there Thursday and charged the Solo in the master bedroom, as well as through the day Friday. Friday night I charged it but it didn't charge... the unit lights were kind of flashing oddly. I went into the kitchen and tried that outlet and same thing. That is why I had just assumed that my battery had crapped out. After buying the Pax, and returning home I plugged the Solo unit into my outlet and it worked again...WHEW!

Buying the Pax only solidified the thoughts and feelings I have about the Solo... that it is hands down the best vape out there and also the most financially sound choice. Although I have finally gotten the Pax to perform well enough it still falls short when compared to the Solo in regards to taste, performance, efficiency and user friendliness. Of course the Pax is stealthy...but that's about it. I can just hand my buddies the Solo for the the first time and they hit it like a champ... I feel like I have to hand them an instruction pamphlet with the Pax.

When I was out searching the shops of Asheville for a replacement unit, nobody carried the Solo...and I notice that here in Nashville. It is hard to figure out aside from the fact that I am sure owners don't make near the profit they do on the Pax. The mark up on those things is ridiculous. It is a shame because I feel that not only is the Solo the best portable out there it also pretty much makes my desktop obsolete. I still go in and hit the Silver Surfer with the SSFG travel Beaker but most of the times it's easier to hit the Solo on the couch, in the studio, in the backyard etc.

I have recommended the Solo to anyone who asks about a vape and to be honest the best thing about now having a Pax is that I can show them the comparison. I think everyone is initially drawn to the Pax because you really want to love it. It is small, stealthy, sexy etc. ...it just doesn't perform next to the Solo in my opinion... or to my friends who have tried them both.

I am so glad the Solo is still kicking.... I think I will grab one of the new ones just in case....:)
What are the comparisons with the new unit and the older ones?

I LOVE my Solo!

As Ano say to you, I think the best it's to use one or two screens with the solo, one up the material and the other down it, between the two screens the weed.

I did a video some time ago for a little review of the Solo, I think I haven't posted it here (it's in castilian but can use it to see how to use the Solo and put 1 or 2 screens, I hope it can resolve your doubts between 1:10 to 1:50) I have to say I only use one screen normally.

Ok, I will look into getting a screen that will fit the bottom of the stem. FYI, the draw resistance is fine. Not so different from my firefly.

Since the new solos can be used while charging, maybe someone should make a docking station with a pass-through for the power?

Ok. Anyway, the nice thing about the solo is the stem is replaceable. I bet some clever person will figure out how to make a stem that can be pre-loaded with weed, and just inserted when needed. Maybe in two pieces that fit together.

I'd buy two, at least.

For me, the concern isn't the loss of vapour, it's the change in flavour. When you leave the stem in, the load develops a "cooked" taste. It's not prominent but it's there.

I've never used a screen to hold the load in place. I just tamp it down lightly and I've not had issues with it falling into the heating chamber. Once heated it tends to stick together and stay in place, and of course inhaling pulls everything back into the stem anyway. I usually have to poke the ABV to get it out. I tried blowing it out—once. That did not go so well. :(

Here is more of the conversation I had about the PA with Vapor Nation:

Me: Ok, so, if Arizer recently updated the Solo to only work with the standard wall charger, then does that mean the power adapter will not work?

I am assuming I have an updated Solo since I just purchased mine.

Vapor Nation: It simply means that the the power adapter will not be necessary, as the unit can be used while charging. Which is essentially what the power adapter is intended for.

Is there any alternatives to planet vape for solo gongs and shorty stems? Would requesting custom glass from pv get me anywhere? Every time I look out of stock and I'd love to find a alternative so I can look at hydra tubed and what not. Why look without gongs

Quick question. Is it ok to leave the charger plugged into the wall in between charges? It's a pain for me to unplug it every time.

It's an opinion, of course, but from what we know it's OK but will lead to early battery failure. The issue being that it will constantly be at maximum voltage, something that's a known bad plan. This is the exact reason it comes to you partially charged. The standard practice is to never store these types fully charged (recommendations are about 60%). Keeping such batteries fully charged will kill them in storage.

IMO the best plan, what I intend to do with mine, is to use it on battery power alone (not plugged in) until 'all the battery lights are out' (or nearly so) then use it one more session (one with 'no lights' seems safe enough) before recharging. If possible, unplugging it before the charge light goes solid (just as the old version). Sessions 'plugged in' I will continue to unplug after before it fully recharges.

Then again, a replacement stock battery is $20 from Randy (when he gets them back in stock.....) and changing them out is pretty straightforward.........

It's all good, just some is gooder?

The main point is to enjoy Solo for what it is I think.
