How fine do you grind your herbs?

Radio

For vaping; is it better to have your herbs (whatever they may be) ground to a dust, or more like crumbs, or chunky?
Like on a scale of 1 to 10 how ground up and chopped do they have to be to vape evenly and effectively.

THANKS

I think most here would agree that it depends on the vaporizer you're using but I usually find that finer grinds work better for me. Anywhere between 7 and 10 on your scale maybe.

My best results come from herb that has been dried well because the dryness affects the grind. The dryer it is the more you can grind it; in some cases almost to powder which has worked well for me.

My worst results have been from a rough chop (without the use of a grinder). Most herb grinders should achieve the grind you need as long as your material has been dried properly. Hope this helps.

That is interesting, because I have been seeing a few people recommend that the herbs be SLIGHTLY moistened before vaping to apparently get the most out of your bud. Not sure how that is supposed to work but i've been seeing it around.

They say to put your dried buds in a container with a bit of orange or lemon peel, or one of these RAW Hydrostones.

and regarding the grinding, that's good to hear! I didn't want to fork out $50 for a state of the art grinder. Most cheap acrylic grinders can get herbs to a dust easily.

There are more experienced people here who could comment on the moisture thing. I have heard it too. I believe has something to do with achieving milky hits but I am not quite sure, Just speaking from personal experience.

I personally have never been able to get an acrylic grinder to give me a fine grind but if it does give you a fine grind thats good. You probably have some pretty dry material in that case. If it crumbles to dust in an acrylic you can probably achieve the same results just using your hands.

All my bud is try and almost crumbly to the touch. Depends on the vape, and scenario. I will have a fine fine powder for my mflb, coarse grind in my GonGs with my underdog, whole buds in my GonGs with my underdog, and medium grnd with nylon stems. Medium grind with hammer, fine grind with vapman.

(well, this topic is an oldie by goodie ...)

the trichomes, which contain the bioactive ingredients of the herb, are on the surface of the leaf material, so it depends on the type of vape. a conduction vape requires grinding fine so the trichomes rest against the heating element. a convection vape, should have the trichomes loose and distributed in the herb container so the hot air can caress each and every trichome on the way to the lungs.

so, since i use a convection vape (i.e. the Bud Toaster, aka The Herbal Cube) i NEVER grind. i use tweezers to pull apart a tightly compressed herb nug and drop the herb loosely into the glass vial.

re: moisture. if there is any water vapor in the herb, it will be vaporized first, so for me, it just slows down the whole vaporizing process.

Nice posts, thanks mate. Very informative. I have am Arizer extreme Q so should I pull apart or finely grind mine?
And you are right about the moisture . A Vape is drying out the herb pretty intensely anyway so why bother moistening it.. Unless someone else can shed some light on it

Adding moisture is a waste of time and energy, the water will vaporize first so you are using energy to vaporize water that could have started vaporizing your material instead and for the love of God do not keep citrus peels in with your herb, all you are doing is promoting mold and bacteria growth and providing a meal for insects and mites. If you plan to store large amounts long term and don't want it to dry out then use an airtight light proof container and use humidapacks or something similar to regulate moisture in the container.

As others have stated grinding really depends on the vape, they run the gamut from the MFLB which works best with an almost powder grind to the HA which instructs you not to grind at all.

Just mentioning that a person should probably try to vape a whole piece or big "chunk" in their convection vapes at least once, just to see how tasty it can be.

When using my FF, I usually just tear a couple pieces off a whole and take a couple rips before I mash it up in the FF bowl. The taste if fantastic. I often do this with my HI as well.

sometimes i don't even grind: just drop a nuglet into a stem on my underdog and draw. these first few hits are wispy. after the first few hits, i take a chopstick or a corkscrew and mash the herb in the stem into a powder. these hits are huge and milky

imo, this method is the most efficient for herb conservation as nothing is left behind on a grinder.

I muddle it down to the consistency of salt or fine sand for my Plenty, and use a thorough shredded fluff out of my SCS for my Lotus and Hammer- sometimes just slightly coarser with the Lotus due to it using a less fine screen.

I have an EQ and a Solo.

Regarding Use of Nuggs:
Have tried whole mini-nugs or chunks in the Solo, nice flavor! Then I drop that into a dedicated grinder for later use in the EQ (for sedative effect).

Regarding Regular Grinding:
All my regular grinding is done with MFLB Nano Grinder. Loaded 1/4 is good for a Solo Stem load. Loaded 1/2 way is good for EQ session.

Don't know much about history. Don't know much vape-ology. Know a bit 'bout the things I cook. Thought perhaps I'd offer this look. Note how scissors my flowers pluc'. Know this will now be oven-stuc'. Sativa soon shall simmer nicely. Never need crush-to-dust the botany.

With gratitude for the memory of Sam Cooke'`s song.

i grind to a cornmeal consistency with most my vapes. I have a wonderful steel large 4 piece grinder that I got a couple years ago from Gotvape. Ive dropped it several times, still as good as new, it collects kief in the bottom.

I want one that will also collect kief! I think with grinders, they range between $2 shitty acrylic ones and at the ABSOLUTE MOST you would pay $50, but regardless; it's worth it to get one that is going to last literally a lifetime. Thanks for the answers and helping me come to that conclusion FCers

You'll get better taste with some moisture but otherwise it doesn't matter. You don't need (or want) an extremely fine consistency when you grind except with a model like the Magic Flight (conduction), and you can't get a powdery grind unless the herb is very dry. Most vapes do fine with a simple coarse grind.

You won't get a lot of kief separated with a grinder unless the bud is dry. I've used a ton of different grinders through the years, and at this point I only use a 4 piece screen grinder when I have dry, crumbly bud (almost always in the moisture sucking wintertime). Dry bud greatly benefits from 'screening kief' since otherwise you tend to lose a lot of it (in the container, on your fingers, etc.). When the bud has some moisture I've found that little of the kief separates (it generally just sticks to the herb) and screening it just isn't worthwhile, so I use a 2 piece grinder.

Lo and Behold! The transformative power of Vapor.
Optimum? Freshly dried, grinded, placed in 'cookie jar', then left out say 15 minutes before ready.
Consistancy? Depends on the vaporizer. Normally I use my 4pc SC shredder(Medical green). It doesn't have diamond teeth like most grinders and pulls the materials apart more than say a cutting edge. It was designed with a CAD program and it shreds anything - no problem. Have considered using a MFLB finishing grinder though.

Can do the 'double grind' method with it. Grind it, contents go into the bowl of the 4pc and sits on the screen. :nod:Tip it upside down and grind again. Stuff in bowl drops into the teeth. grind while holding it upside down. Then empty top half. there you have it. Double grinded.

If I want to go finer. double grind, lift top lid, tap lid only on plate/sheet of paper/coffee filter. place lid back on, grind, repeat. only the lighter particles that are stuck to the inside of the top lid will be separated from what is inside the grinder. Tamp that out. Success.

Oh and I'm skilled with a pair of scissors and the corner of a paper envelope too.:D

EQ - coarse loose pack for cyclone. finer for elbow.
Pax - Very Fine, dense brick packed
Summit - coarse medium pack

I find that it really doesn't matter what I load into my herbie as long as it fits and isn't too tight.

Vaping mini nugs whole is a nice experience. You get a difference experience and the favours and effects come on at different points. Once you've dried it out you can crush it and get some crazy hits.

I've had shatter for so long I haven't gotten bud in a while. I should probably remedy that.

How fine of a a grind depends on the the vaporizer and the mouthpiece screen I'm using or no screen. How much moisture is in your product, A lot of factors to keep in mind. Sometimes it comes down to personal preference if all else fails. Also some folks prefer using little nuggets and that's OK too. If you have too tight of a draw, it might come down to grind and screen, also moisture .

Whatever way works for you is the right way always remember that.
