PBW & the Chemistry of Clean

do you mean a like a citrus acid or are you actually squeezing a lemon or lime or orange in your glass?

I have a very funny image of a bong with a juicer built in.....

the breakfast rig!
I have a LIME tree that produces the juiciest fruit. My neighbors have Grapefruit and Lemon trees. So at the end of cleaning I squeeze a citrus fruit on hand into the glass.
Then rinse with RO water.

Once dry I cover the diffuser with pure RO water.

I find that my method works for my liking. You can use citrus acid in your rinse cycle however fruit is free!

Don't know if it's news, it was to me (mostly because I am totaly clueless about those things) but "gritty" cleaners can strip the fuming off glass according to the guy who made my fumed recyclers. It seems PBW is what he would call "gritty" because it stripped most of the fuming off one of my pieces (10 minute soak, hot tapwater). Just a heads up ;)

Hey everyone I have a couple tubes with pretty bad hard water stains that I would like to get clean. I read through part of the thread and some other people asked this but I didn't ever see a response or success story.

I have already tried iso salt and lots of shaking. I also tried a 24 hour soak in simple green. It is such nice glass and I feel bad about how I used to treat it. Combustion day in day out, changing the water every other day maybe. I was a monster!

Someone help me please

Lol yeah I thought about but there are no home brew stores in my town so I thought maybe someone would have some advice for me specific to hard water stains. There has to be something out there. I am sure pbw is great and all but I'm also sure it is not the be all and end all.

I think I read some people suggest vinegar a while back. I might try that next. Please limit suggestions to products that can be found at Walmart, target, Lowes, Menards, farm and fleet, or supermarkets

Thanks

I get PBW on my doorstep via amazon, but if it's not to your liking, have you tried products specifically designed for hard water stains? CLR is one brand I see at many places. Another thing that has worked in the past is Oxi-Clean, I'm sure there are other brands. Very fine steel wool soaked in iso should buff out the spots on the outside.

@Herr_Dampf , I appreciate the response and to learn from your experience. The question was asked by me a few posts back. Now regretting the single time my fumed piece got the same PBW treatment yours did (well a cold water soak).

If I may ask, how does your recycler look now? Did it just lighten the fume, or strip it away completely? Is the de-fuming even across the surface or in blotches?

After seeing your post, I look at my little fumed recycler, and think, "It does look a bit lighter in tone...." but when I take it outside in good light it appears fine.

Thanks again for this post. I hope it helps others how it helped me.

For hard water stains, PBW isn't going to help a whole lot. Try vinegar, lemon juice, or one of those citrus based dishwasher cleaners. CLR as a last result.... I had a bubbler that took about a month of vinegar soaking, risnsing with lemon juice, more vinegar soakin.... before the hard water stains dissolved. It was process of attrition. I learned my lesson. Nowadays I only use distilled water with Rezblock. No more hard water stains whatsoever.

Sometime a table spoon of baking soda to 1 cup white vinegar will do the trick. Now the big chemical company don't want you to know that.

Pretty cheap and available in most countries!

I lived in France for 5 years and learned to love wine. So I get these wine plugs call wine o vac!

Their made in Switzerland!
You can buy them in Europe or USA.
I clean all my glass pieces and put these wine stops before I shake.
Works pretty well!
Awesome thanks. Found them at my local total wine (aka a giant walmart like store with everything to do with alcohol). Only $5 for a two pack, it even tells me what isle to goto.

When MJ becomes legal me and @ataxian are going to partner up and make total ganja!

IDK for sure, but I have 1 of those and it isn't hurt by ISO, should be fine.
Thats what I was reading as well. But with PBW I have heard of it eating labels and eating the anodizing on a grinder. Thought its best to ask.

ELBs are soaking right now, fits in that tube container perfectly, a surprising amount of gunk came off. I know the tube holds very little water so this might be why but was pretty cool to shake it and instantly get brown swamp water

pigfoot

Dabs are vapor too!
I notice if I clean with only hot soapy water, I get spots when the water dries, even if I rinse with RO water.
We have hard water here, and when I clean with PBW, it's like it stops the water from spotting and leaves it crystal clear, I love it!
