ABV Cannaoil Brownies Question

i'm sorry to hear that this did not work for you but there are a few things that may have caused complications with your recipe.

one. i would not have strained out the ABV after the leeching process. it is just too difficult and not work the time because there is a great chance of lost oil. its very hard to strain out all the oil at that point because the ABV has essentially emulsified.

two. baking at 315degrees F is too close to comfort for me when it comes to medibles. i usually stick closer to the 275-300degrees F. i don't know how well you know your oven but it may run too hot or too cold so if it runs even 10-20 degrees too hot then you're cooking your cannabinoids at upwards of 335degrees F (destroying the desired psychoactives) for 45 minutes.

three. the potency of your brownies is highly dependent on the darkness of your ABV. if you're ABV is around the chocolate to dark chocolate color then you're going to need more of it as opposed to ABV that is a yellowish-brown.

your problem most likely one or more of these issues because the leeching process should have worked and to me is more reliable to simmering it in a pan due to overcooking. on the chemical level, it's kinda like pouring a bunch of salt into water and shaking it for several days which should result in binding. again i'm sympathetic for this not working for you cause i've been in the same boat and its very disappointing when the medibles don't turn out the way you want.
I see, well most recipes I've come across called for even higher than 315, so I thought I was shooting low on the temperature and actually playing it safe. If I do this again, I will most definitely use a lower temp.

In regards to complication one you listed, unfortunately living with two shedding dogs, we get hair in almost everything from food to clothes to stashes, specifically my ABV stash since it is handled much more than green. Dog hair is literally all over the place here, so when it gets on my clothing and I handle anything, it will fall into whatever I'm working with. I don't like eating dog hairs (who does?), so I am very careful when I handle food. ABV is a bit harder to keep hairs away from, as I handle it much more and especially the surface I dump it onto before stashing it. That's why I chose to strain, because thick, dirty animal hairs aren't exactly the most appetizing thing I could add to a dish. Smoking I probably wouldn't care, but eating I really don't like, which may be why I'll make some hash next time. It's nearly impossible to keep those damn hairs out of ABV, trust me, and there is just too many to 'suck it up' and eat it anyways, otherwise I would do that. But I'll try my best for now on to keep the surfaces I dump ABV on as hair-free as possible. Maybe then, if I keep my ABV clean of dog hair, I will attempt cooking again. Although I will probably simmer next time, just to be safe.

Oh well though, it's only ABV, not a big deal. It was mostly low-grade anyways, and some mids. Now that I have kush, I may treat my ABV with a little more respect and make sure I use it properly whether it be cooking or hash.

i highly recommend doing the technique that i do seeing as how i usually have to make brownies under very similar circumstances. my last experience was with 19g's of dark brown ABV and about 0.5g's of keif(decarbed) which produced 20 strong brownies.

i took the 19g's of ABV and ground it up as much as possile, close to powder. then put it in a glass mason jar along with the required amount of oil from the brownie recipe, i usually try to get about 1/2 cup to 2/3 cup recipes. add a pinch of salt and a table spoon of vinegar. this is suppose to help with the leeching process for the actives. keep this jar in a cool dark place for several days and shake throughout each day. do not exceed 7 days as this could risk rancidity of the oil.

now you have cannaoil without the need to heat. however, to be safe i do a slight heating process to be safe. i place the jar with the top off in a pot of simmering water for about 15 minutes and stirring occasionally. the oil after this process is ready to be used for cooking.

after making brownies you can store them for about a month in the fridge, any longer and i would recommend freezing them. there is very minimal, unnoticeable, loss in potency while in the fridge.

I made a batch last week with this non-heating method. I used 26g's of light brown ABV medical grade 50/50 sativa/indica. I cut the pan into 24 pieces, so the math is a bit over a gr./piece. I started slowly getting buzzed and this was great, but about an hour in I began with some stomach intensity the lasted the duration. Now I will tell you that I only ate a few scraps on an empty stomach. So I chalked up that experience to an empty stomach, and not used to edibles. Then a few days later my wife and I split 1 piece, after a dinner of good sushi, and started getting ripped within 1/2 hr. Then again the stomach intensity. It really put a damper on the experience that lasted into the next day. I was surprised by the strength. Any feedback on this info. Sushi was not the reason. Thanks

It's possible that the intensity of it rattled your stomach. I've seen it cause nausea. For some reason I'm not affected in that way but some people are. Were you dizzy and unable to see clearly before the stomach intensity, and unable to get it together to do simple things like stand up to walk to the bathroom because it seemed way too complicated and involved?

I actually signed up to vouch for ABV being very successful in baking. Using a different source, a similar method was used where in a coffee grinder I ground my ABV into a fine powder and then simply threw it into the mix and baked as per directions. The source also included a tip of adding an extra egg to help balance the texture difference that adding powdered ABV does. I did this, but can't really say it helped as I haven't tried it without, however it didn't hurt any. Texture was good, though a bit moist near the center. I may try adding only half an egg.

The box recipe made 16 2x2in brownies. I used 20g of ABV (mostly medium brown, some lighter, but not black). At 1.25g per brownie, my first test of it's potency had me extremely high, so much so that for a small duration of the evening I felt like I may get sick. I didn't, but after I only needed 1/2 a brownie to get a good buzz and 1/4 for a light buzz (but still a good experience). For reference to compare: I'm a daily toker, averaging 4-6 "loads" in my SSV whip-vape between morning to night, with a 8-10 hour break for work.

I'm sitting on 22.8g that I'm going to be using this time around, but instead trying out the ideas mentioned above with shaking in a mason jar with the oil, a pinch of salt, and a tablespoon of vinegar for 4 days. Not sure if it matters which kind, as I have both white and apple cider vinegar, so I'll do half a tablespoon of each.

And sorry, would've included this is my previous post if I had read to the end of the page. I too have experienced stomach "tenderness" while eating brownies made with this method. As described in my previous post, most so on my first test at eating a whole brownie in one go.

As I was working my way through the batch slowly, I found a dose that worked for me and ate it on a non-empty stomach. The high achieved was still good, and the pains minimized to nothing or barely noticeable. My guess is that it's the actual plant matter that's causing the upset stomach. I've actually had a similar effect after having a good helping of matcha tea on an empty stomach (where finely ground green tea leaves are used).

Hey Guys,
I also tried to do the Cannaoil recipe.
I used about 12 grams of quite light ABV (I have nothing to weight it so this is pure approximation) in 100ml of canola oil

My error was to not grind it thick enough, which has forced me to filter it to get usable oil.
Here is the result, about 70ml of oil (lost some during filtration etc..)

I've not tried it yet, maybe this afternoon if I have nothin to do :)

Right, if you ran the ABV through a coffee bean grinder the oil (whether through simmering or cold infusion) would have been very dark and inky with no real need for straining. Regardless what you have should be of value. Enjoy.

Personally I have found that Iftar best way to cook with mmj is to take the time to make a water hash. It really doesn't take as long or require as much stuff as you think. I have a bubbelator (small washing machine that is rebranded as a hash making tool) so this makes things much easier but you could use a big bucket with a lid just as well (like the kind from home depot or ace) you will just need a bit more arm juice :)
If you do this on a regular basis it is worth it to invest in a pyramid bag (a large micron bag with a zipper that you dump your trim into) Makes for really easy cleanup. For lack of, you can replace it with really cheap cheese cloth, just fold it in 2 to restrain more plant matter. Trust me if you don't you will have a mess at the end.
A few hash filters (you can find sets of them online), another one of those big buckets from the hardware store (to catch the water)
The quality of your water will also affect the taste of your end product. It's worth getting ice from the store, 1 big bag is enough. I use filtered water also, but you dont have to.
Dump the herbs in ice water in the washer/bucket and run the cycle/shake that thing
I usually run 2 cycles then drain the water through the stack of filters, make sure to leave room between.
Once the water is gone, scoop it all up and let it dry.
If you are going to cook with it like I do,just pat it dry with a paper towel delicately to not loose a bunch.
I usually bake with it, so it just goes in with the eggs and butter, alternatively apple sauce or a banana and coconut oil

The end result is extremely strong, delicious tasting, edibles and a non stinky house.
I honestly think that if you are gonna take the time to stir butter around a pot for hours, you might as well not take the chance of cooking out all the "good stuff"
:)

Holy crap those are some great results. I have about 17g's of abv here & I'm thinking about just throwing into a recipe As you did to avoid the wait time. Would I get more potent brownies by soaking them for 4days?

Actually, my methods have changed since posting that. But to answer your question, you probably will get stronger batches, but I would argue it's not very significant to justify so long of a wait to process, so that method and wait time is up to you. It is not the process I would recommend for ABV anymore.

My current method is something I've held to for a few times now because of how great coconut oil is to work with when dealing with so much gross tasting bud (sorry ABV-taste lovers). I got the recipe for extraction out of "The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook"... p.23 Cannacoconut Oil, and I highly recommend it (pun intended).

It basically amounts to this. You'll need any jar of quality 14oz Virgin Coconut Oil, and use 2oz of ABV per whole jar, or 1oz per half. You can do half jars if you're low on ABV, which is a bit more than what you'll probably need for general cookie/brownie recipes, but I find it easier to just do the whole thing and save it for when I need it. And if using fresh bud, use 1oz per whole jar. Once the oil is infused, it's good for 3-6 months if refrigerated, but coconut oil itself has a longer shelf life.

1. Fill a large stockpot halfway with water, add bud. Simmer on low heat for 1 hour. Then add coconut oil and return to a simmer for about 5-10 min. Remove from heat. Let the oil mixture sit for 2 days as it slowly extracts, covered, at room temperature.

2. After 2 days time, reheat the mixture to melt any coconut oil that may have hardened. Make sure it's not too hot to touch! Strain mixture into a glass dish, being sure to press the matter firmly against the side of strainer to get all the goodies. Refrigerate the oil and water mixture for 24 hours (or place it outside, covered, if it's hella cold where you are). Any remaining debris that got through the strainer will sink to the bottom of the dish with the water, the oil will float to the top, and as it chills, will harden to a sheet/block.

3. After it's hardened, break off the coconut oil carefully and quickly (almost like a sheet of ice over a small puddle) and pat dry. Melt down the coconut oil on stovetop and place back in the jar it came in, making sure to not allow any of the water to find it's way into the jar, as this will turn it rancid more quickly if you intend to store it.

4. Use 1:1 as butter and oil substitutes in any recipe.

Let me know if you have any questions on that process. I don't believe I'll be wavering to another unless something better crops up. I believe that the boiling process in water helps to remove some of the flavor so it doesn't end up in your food so much. I also love how this oil can harden at lower room temps, which allows for water to even be used in the first place, and provides additional debris removal along with the help of gravity in the last steps. Lastly, it's very tasty! It has more saturated fat than butter, so your food will taste just as rich and possibly even more chewy (for cookies at least). It is also said to be more healthy than butter, even though it has more saturated fat. This has to do with the difference in the type of saturated fat that makes up each. Obviously if you have coconut allergies, this recipe is a no-go for you. Good luck! Happy baking! :)

Hey there I had a bit of ABV laying around that was still pretty greenish and I've never done edibles before because they seem to take so much fresh weed and most recipes call for methods that would produce a lot of odor. I was going to try the original method but then went with the suggestion you could just throw the finely ground stuff into the mix and you'd be good to go. I tried this with about 14g of very finely ground abv from an electric coffee grinder. Mixed in with the on the box double fudge brownie recipe in an 8x8 pan. I was a little concerned because a)I have an old oven that's not super reliable b) I don't really cook much and I'd never made brownies to begin with.

Anyway while making them my friend at one point remarked it was smelling like weed but I didn't smell anything at all. I do have some allergies though and so I'm not trusting my smelling capabilities to be perfect right now, but I did smell a brownie smell while they were cooking. After the appropriate amount of time making sure not to let the oven get too hot and checking them every few minutes past a certain point I took them out. I took a small corner of one to test, a very small corner. After a while I didn't really feel anything. Waited till later in the day, took a bigger piece and still nothing. Finally took a whole half of one. After that I wound up falling asleep but I think this was more due to lack of sleep than anything else. When I woke up I still felt nothing and it'd been about 4 hours since I'd had my last piece of brownie. I went ahead and ate a whole one and a few hours on now still nothing. Now here's the interesting thing. My friend who said it smelled as they cooked tried one and said she's totally stoned. I wasn't there when she ate it but it think she ate about half of one. I wonder if I just have a much, much higher tolerance? I'll have to get another test subject I think.

The brownies themselves don't taste bad at all. The ABV is there but not overpowering. This might be because as I said the ABV was a greenish? Most of it has come from a MFLB and done using a finishing grinder so it was already pretty fine before it went into the coffee grinder. I also didn't really notice any stomach issues, which I'm grateful for because I actually have a very sensitive stomach.
