I also need the tiny spring loaded pin for the SR74. Mine stopped being "springy" and stays retracted unless you physically pull it out. I filed a ticket yesterday (#2139048) but I hadn't heard back and I saw you and istchad talking about the exact thing I need so I thought I'd chime in.

The top does not blink without the cartridge. The top worked with the kiss cartridge until I broke the coil yesterday. I broke it trying to adjust the coil because it was only heating in the center. I didn't burn it up.

Ive tried the Herc loose and tight, there is a definite gap between the tank and the top.

My multi reads 8.5v coming from the top, so I don't really have a clue what the problem could be.

What batteries are you using with the unit?

Do this press the button and keep holding the button down and gently screw the herc on. See if this resets the top.

Im working on it finalizing the final top versions so i can put this flashing behind us.

I'm using the stock batteries with the unit. I tried screwing it on like that. Same result.

I just got one of these bad boys from @masaki and holy crap!!!! this is the best thing ever. If you have an omicron with an hvd top as you can attach this and run it at any voltage from the 3.7v all the way up to the 7.4. It also works perfectly on the Persei and can be ran at variable voltages by just pushing a button and boom you are done. You wont need batteries or have to wonder if you are running out of juice as this bad boy is doing away with them while you use it. Also it has an attachment to hook it up to a cars cigarette lighter!!! If you plan on using the hercules or any of the other wonderful attachments. Then this should be on the top of your list of need items!!! I had to rave about this as I feel I have just seen the light and it is better than a Double Rainbow!!!

The core is cool for sure! But I primarily use my PERSEI as an on the go unit. The core for at home use for me is kind of pointless, as I love a gold old fashioned torch, and a nail.

Stock batteries are most likely the issue. Aw imr is required for the Hercules.

From what I understand, the stock batteries cannot supply the current that the Herc demands. Voltage is the same but it is all about the amount of Amp draw. I use the Herc with 2x AW IMR 18650 with the SS kit (Herc-saber), or The Core. I have 2x AW IMR 18350's on the to be able to use the Herc with the shorter tube. I never had very much luck with the stock batteries. They run the KISS perfectly however.

several things will give the blinking (error message)

with the stock batteries, I get a hit or 2 and then it starts blinking part way through a hit or as soon as i let go of the button. This won't happen with better batteries.

a short in the cart will cause the blinking as soon as the button is pressed

the cart pushing down too hard on the center contact in the top of the head also acts like a short.

battery shifting also causes blinking but one push of the button resets that back to normal instant use.

@itschad have you tried the 3.7v rod with a Ti coil yet?

yes. I just would really rather turn this SR71 into an SR74. I dont want to have to be bothered with a multimeter, and I don't feel like waiting 20 seconds to begin getting a hit, as it defeats the purpose of my 3.7v setup

You Need the AW batteries. The Hercules Amp draw is too high!!! Which basically means the Hercules is trying to draw more electricity than the battery can supply! Wherever you read that the stock batteries work is probably half true, but not words to live by. I personally look at it like this... If you just spent at least $300 for your Persei/Herc set up, what is an extra $30 to make it work to its true potential? Lets face it, if you have the money to feed a hercules, you will have the money for quality batts and a good charger.

Never made any complaints about buying better batteries, also didn't spend that much but that's beside the point ;). I simply won't be able to order any batteries for this weekend which means that I can't try this bad boy out until mid next week. I already had plans to pick up a better set of batteries.

At this point I'm not really frustrated, just anxious, but I'm going to be a little upset if the batts don't remedy the issue. Hopefully I will be able to get my KISS cart rebuilt tonight.

i used the supplied 18350's and a set of trust fire li-ions for more than two weeks before i got AW's. i really didnt see much difference except for how long the bat lasted. i recall changing them often to maintain good results. that was on a sr74 7.4v rod.

Do you have a V3 top as well?

IDK what the deal is with the v3 tops but I can confirm the Hercules works (albeit shortly before they die) with the stock IMR batteries with the earlier tops. Perhaps @THC SCIENTIFIC can elaborate on this, regarding if there is an issue or not with the latest tops (which are slated to be replaced soon?)?

It doesn't really seem like a problem to me, but rather a "feature" that keeps you from putting too much stress on the batteries and the top.

the v3 Low voltage Circuit is different and is designed to protect the Persei even more from shorts caused by two possibilities.

1. A badly assembled SR71 or a SR74
2. Center Pin issue and the very few we have seen a button issue.


Elaborating on #2. The new circuit board when paired up with the new center pin design and better button makes the Persei tops almost bullet proof.


These new tops are totally different then anything else and we have decided to implement them on our repair program asap so that majority of all issues are resolved. They will have a 6 amp limit and can handle the Hercules without issues. The only issue i see rising from this is leakage and this should be taken into account that these tops need a little more maintenance to keep the threads clean if there is a leak. Im sure we will see issues with this but there is no way to get around this and we will be implementing a service fee if we discover the tops have not been maintained to provide best possible user experience.


Now to explain the AW difference with standard batteries.

There are few reasons why the tops flash.

1. Battery Low Voltage
2. short protection

Now the current top BLV are set at 3.2v (when using single battery) and 6.4v (when using dual battery mode) and when the voltage drops bellow these set points it will make the Tops flash. To fix this issue we will drop the low voltage protection to 3.0v or 2.8v and 6.0v or 5.6v still have not decided yet. This allows the battery under load to work a little bit more before the 3 flashes pop up. The standard imr batteries when under load fall below the Low voltage protection circuit quicker and cause the 3 flashes. The AW Imr batteries hold the voltage longer and can take a greater load before the BLV kicks in. I hope this explains it.

2. Short circuit now i would like to talk to you about this but we would like to keep proprietary stuff off the interwebs. I do apologize but i cant explain how this short circuit protection works.


Now please bear with us while we implement these tops and get these out asap.

I am familiar with low voltage cutoff circuits from RC. I had a feeling that this was related. The peak load on the battery causes the voltage to temporarily drop and trips the LVC. I'm pretty sure this generally happens on the higher discharge batteries though which seems opposite from whats going on here.

Edit: Nevermind, had my discharge rate facts backwards. This is exactly the same as the issues one has with an RC vehicle. I'm feeling pretty confident that the new batts will rectify the problem. I also found a local supplier!

Well it happens to high drain batteries as well your right, but it happens little bit slower since the AW is top notch and can handle the loads. The internal resistance on the AW is lower meaning will give you better voltage when under load vs the generic imrs which have a higher internal resistance and give you a lower voltage under load.
