Considering QWET - School me!

I've tried several times qwet and bho can't seem to get it to burn away clean. Maybe I'm breaking it up to much. I'm not grinding but using my fingers to break it up into green pea sized pieces maybe a little bigger.

I recently got the ss screens that 2clicker recommended (btw excellent customer service from clickers link) and was hoping they were going to make the difference. Definitely better than using coffee filters but didn't fix my problem.

Freezing my materials and ethanol for a day. Then doing a 3 min soak with a little shake every minute. Then filtering through the screens and evaping between 100 and 110 degrees.

It does come out a pretty transparent shatter but leaves a black residue behind on the foil.

Any suggestions?

P.S. Happy 420 everybody :spliff:

sounds about perfect to me. not sure whats up. how close are you holding the flame to the foil? i found i was burning the oil when doing a "foil test" i backed off the flame a bit and then it didnt leave anything behind.

I was putting the flame close to the foil. Now trying it further away and not getting a black residue anymore but i do get a brown stain left behind. Is that normal? It looks a lot better than it did with the flame up close.

if you scratch the stain with a fingernail does it come off easily?

honestly i have no idea what that would be... fats or waxes? if its minimal i would worry about it.

how much trim are you working with? would it even take a whole $30 bottle?

and if you have used QWISO then you have used shatter/honey oil/wax. QWISO will make those forms of oil. QWISO is not the same or similar to bubble or keif. QWISO (quick wash iso) is just like QWET (quick wash ethanol) except it is extracted using a dif solvent. both will make oils of dif forms (shatter, wax, etc). no solvents are used to extract bubble and keif.
Hey man, my delayed start is being fulfilled tonight! I am doing my first QWET run with the most trich covered fresh buds I have ever seen in my life. Even the trim on this stuff have trichs caked thick on them! *drools*

So as a refresher - no grinding or winterization of buds, 3 min washes instead of 1 min (as with ISO), don't shake too vigorously? Any other key pointers I should know?

EDIT: Or, alternatively, should I do a run with only kief from said high end bud so I can still use the rest of the flowers to vape? :D Am I correct in thinking there would be no water solubles to worry about with kief, so I could do a non-frozen wash for as long as I want without effecting the quality of the oil?

Am I on the right track here to think that QWET runs with kief only will produce fool-proof high quality wax/shatter?

I went ahead and started my first QWET run with 1.1g of kief in ethanol (filled ethanol about 5 times higher than the kief filled in the bottom of the jar as per Skunkpharm instructions).

Will post results once I finish this 25 odd min soak/shake and then evap. Mmmmmmm!

I figured using kief would be the most foolproof way to get good results, and leaves me the rest of the flowers to vape :D

So I made a fine Keif QWETH after reading up, all went well until ..
Letting Evap over night and found it sitting with a white fluid on top .... shocked I called for help from Forum members and got it (THANKS)!

Turned out to be waxes, seperated from the evap and cold (had it sitting in rather cold), in room temperature it mixed back up.
Nevertheless Purged more and now have a 1A homemade product!
Thanks FC

I find that white fluid often too. I was under the impression that it was water contamination. Either from the 5% of everclear that is not ethanol, or from the condensate created when exposing the ice cold liquid/collection dish to warm air...or quite possibly both. When I warm my dish it does appear to mix up real well. Maybe ethanol extracts more polar molecules than thought?....I guess that's why these shorter washes are better?

Regardless, I've been super stoked on my stay at home science experiments!

Oh crap, I forgot to include a pic of my QWET results!

No white residue on mine, I did accidentally wash too long though, got a bit of plant waxes in there. Still was ridiculously powerful and tasted great :D

My theory on this is that it isn't the plant waxes so much as it is the terpenes and flavonoids which are water soluble. Once the alcohol evaporates you're left with the remaining water which holds whatever remains. Stuff smells more than the oil IME but I don't remove it or anything, just let everything evaporate.

Round two of Kief Shatter. Straight off the evap.

By the way everyone, if you are using kief, you have likely got a very small amount of solution to evaporate. Get one of these blind espresso machine filters (used for cleaning proper espresso machines (not automatic ones). After filtering the kief out of the ethanol, pour the results gradually into this and place it in shallow boiling water on the stove to evap, then simply pick this up off top with rubber gloves. No need to scrape/heat/fuck around. This is food grade stainless :)

This stuff is more oily than shattery. It is clear and tastes like lime jelly babies though! Amazing heady stoned feeling, very strong!

anyone else worry about plasticizers from ISO bottles ending up in the finished product?

edit: (woops, just realized this is the wrong thread for that question)

Round 3 of QWET: this time with buds.

Took an 8th of Gringo buds/mostly trim. Washed for about a minute, then two more 30 second washes til the trichs were completely spent.

More shatter resulted. Lovely tasting stuff, a decent amount for such a tiny bit of herb. Life is good!

i havent made any qwet in a while because i have found a local source for good oil at prices cheaper than i can extract it at.

i think i am going to do dry ice kief extraction and then run that. been wanting to do this for a while, but just havent purchased the sifting device yet.

I just discovered this thread. As someone who lives somewhere where concentrates nearly don't exist but everclear is $15 a bottle I can not wait to try this. Question though, I have limited space and the only dark place to let it purge with a fan I have is a walk in closet. Would this be unsafe?

Have been looking into QWET but haven't been able to find any ethanol or high enough proof alcohol. Was wondering if anyone knew were I could get some in canada for a reasonable price. The highest proof alcohol I could find is 151 but guessing that's probably not strong enough? Thanks for any help

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
In Canada, Everclear is pretty much non existent to buy now publicly (I've found), except for the odd liquor store (provincial ones) in Quebec. Alberta 'used to' sell Everclear but the outlets have since stopped stocking it. I end up getting a friend of mine in QC to grab it for me however it's damn expensive ( $68 for a 1.14 litre bottle of 94% ), so I rarely use it anymore.

I ran into an old italian buddy from back in the day who's cousins are still running stills for the family alcohol.... he is supposed to get me some distilled grape alcohol that he claims is filtered clear and near 96% that they use for making liqueurs. So time and experimentation is hopefully in my future :science:

So I picked up all the materials needed and tried this out. I think I got decent results. I used a quarter of improperly trimmed flowers that weren't the best. I yielded .7 combined from 2 runs. Now, I have no experience with concentrates prior to this, the oil is dark brownish, if its stretched out its somewhat translucent. It doesn't taste that good but that could be because of the buds I chose weren't of the highest quality, it kicks though. Over all I'm pretty happy, thanks for all the info on this thread, never thought that I would be able to make this stuff with a little everclear and a freezer.
