Need help liberating shatter from parchment! HALP!

So let me start off with this:

FML. I got some of this badass shatter yesterday. Smell is amazing, and it looks super bomb! The issue is that it is spotwelded to the fucking parchment paper.

Upon trying to open the parchment, I see that it is completely glued together. I SLOWLY tried tugging at it, but that just resulted in the paper ripping a bit. I then tried warming the stuff up with my hand... that made things worse.

I tried freezing it, using my teflon coated tweezers to try to pull it open, still nothing except more shredded parchment. Eventually I was able to get the parchment open, only to see that the slab of shatter had basically pulled itself in half.... with each side firmly stuck to the damn paper.

At this point I can chip pieces of it off, but a very large amount is still trapped on the paper itself. I am at a loss as what to try? Even worse, I have two 0.5g envelopes of this stuff, and the other one is in the same situation (although I didn't try to open that one after seeing this).

The only good news here is that the dispensary is legit and is replacing my shatter, while allowing me to keep what I already have. So now this begs the question...

HOW THE FUCK DO I GET THIS OFF THE PARCHMENT?!?!?!

And before you say dissolve it, I'm looking for alternative suggestions.

Put it in the freezer for a few minutes.

Should have read more closely. Freezing has always been my answer to sticky situations.

Yes, I tried that. It still doesnt allow the concentrate lift off the parchment. The shatter is pull and snap consistency for the most part even at room temp. You can see in the pic the little shards that have broken off as I was trying to get the stuff off the paper.

Parchment not wax paper right? Hot wax poured on wax paper usually means trash can.

Id assume its parchment since its a brand name extraction? You cant scrape any wax coating off of it.

Maybe try putting the whole PP with the shatter in the oven at 110f-115f then scrape it off while warm. your concentrate most likely was at these temps when it was purged anyhow so you shouldn't lose too many terpenes.

You tried literally everything I would have, at this point I would've lost patience and just thrown it out.

Only thing I can think of (and no idea if it would work, just thought of it now) would be to try and warm it up with your hands and then use a paper clip to kind of scrape the paper. If you can't scrape it try to pull it up and off the paper at the very least and then turn it upside down (wax down) and put it in a glass dish. From there I would try and gently heat the bottom of the glass to get it nice and sticky and then try and wipe off as much wax as I can into the glass.

Honestly though if you already got a replacement you should just rip off as much paper as you can and eat the remaining wax.

Edit: Thinking more on it, wiping it off on glass will probably be most effective (short of dissolving). Is there some way you could heat up a dish or glass dabber really lightly (so it's like barely warm enough) and then just use it to wipe the wax off the paper? Would be tough not burning the paper but can't think of any other way.

So basically you heat up a glass dabber, slap it in there, roll it around so it gets as much wax on it as possible then pull it out and scrape the sides. Very inefficient but seems like it should work

I'd try to put the parchment in a Pyrex dish and set the dish on top of a pot of hot but not boiling h2o on the stove. Let it melt back down to a liquid. then pop the parchment in the freezer for a minute or so just until it sets back up and try to peel it off. If that still doesn't work, heat it to liquid again and lightly scrape it off the parchment onto an oil slick pad or just right onto the glass to be scraped up.

I think this is next up. I was somewhat successful at scraping (more like "pulling" sideways) at a very shallow angle . Allows me to pull off everything but a thin layer of oil in some places (see bottom left corner of the pic below). Think im SOL in the spots where the parchment got shredded.

Any more ideas about the one I havent opened yet? Im thinking maybe pulling the first one apart made things much worse...

Also, you should be able to take the unopened one back to the Disp and they should refund you / trade you out for something without PP.

This is bonus oil. They are giving me a replacement gram, no need to return this stuff. Doesnt mean Im not going to try my hardest to get at it tho!

Oven should work just as well but I'd rather try it on the stovetop double boiler as it would be easier to work with it and see everything while you are heating than it would be in the oven. Good luck.

Indeed. Although for the sake of laziness, Im going to pop the unopened one in the freezer. Hopefully intact PP will allow me to pull it apart without tearing.

Oh and I asked the BT and he said they get big 7-10g slabs of this stuff, then they break it into 0.5g chunks and place that in parchment. So it wasnt poured onto this stuff, and yes it is indeed PP.

i agree double boiler would work easier but depending on your ovens settings there might be a proofing bread option, and that might satisfy not going above 115f.

I was going to suggest simply throwing the paper into a stainless steel thermos and then emptying some butane into it and let it stay liquid long enough to dissolve, then just re-purge,

but you seem to have corrected your situation.

@itschad thanks for that anyway.

BTW, I spoke to the owner of the dispens, since I posted this on IG and tagged them.

"@caligulasruination We honestly don't know why it's happening. The parchment paper used it Reynolds precut sheets that we cut down to size, we have never had an issue with the paper before but since people have had the issue we have switched to the thicker silicone lined bleached Reynolds parchment paper from the store instead of the minimal silicone unbleached Reynolds sheets. We honestly think it's a manufacturing issue/change with the parchment we were using as none of my personal stash or even @yb_concentrates were like that."

As you can see she even tagged the extraction artist, who came in and said:

"Sorry about the issue it's definitely a Reynolds problem and not @newcannabisrepublic and not to say I'm perfect but it's not something I did either. Like bhoss said, ours were fine and so is the stuff I dropped off in slab form so it has to be the pre cut sheets. Sure @newcannabisrepublic will fix it ASAP and take care of you for your current meds."

Well, there you have it. As I said, this organization seems to have their shit together and took care of the problem not only for myself but all the other patients as well...

Plus I got about .8g of free shatter for my my troubles, lol.

I know this is a few month old thread, but I am having the same issue as OP - only mine is more runny at room temperature! There are also some holes in the sheet of PP.

I'm assuming OP simply scraped the oil off the parchment, but this stuff has been in my humid drawer so long that it nearly leaks out of the folded paper! In fact, it's ALL OVER the area of one side of the parchment. It is sitting in the freezer right now. I've tried scraping it after being the in the freezer, but it's almost like thick toothpaste. It gets everywhere. Some of it even sticks to the parchment somehow. I will post a picture of it when I get home tomorrow.

I have access to 99% ISO, but no EtOH nor butane.

Would it be possible to soak the impregnated PP with the ISO? Should I freeze the ISO first? I've never done an extraction/purge before, but I've read a few teks out of curiosity... Any help would be appreciated. Yes, I do feel it's worth salvaging.

Thank for reading.

I just wasted a gram of wax by playing the "Tar Baby"
I touched it, used another finger, then a toothpick, then a dab tool and proceeded to spread the wax evenly everywhere but my Enano tube. I know it isn't the same as the problem you are having.....but it is similar.
I don't have an answer, just wanted to let you know there are others out there making Rookie mistakes.

@Pallzley that sucks bro. I'm not sure how well parchment will handle being soaked in iso. That would be my only concern as I'm sure you don't want little pieces of silicone paper inside your oil?

@TeeJay1952 ROFL @ "tar baby". It's been a while since I've heard that. Also been there done that with my oil too. Super suck.
