Ascent Vaporizer by DaVinci

Just thought I'd share this with you guys.

My friend uses a thick rubber band to create a seal between the main body and the pivoting bowl.

The band was about 3/4" in height, and he just wrapped it around the circumference of the gap between the main body and bowl portion.

This rubber band band-aid definitely made a huge difference when comparing with and without it.

It ensures that the air travels through the bottom grill and through the bowl... vs any air passing through the body-bowl surfaces.

I don't own an Ascent, but hope this helps.

The rubber bands that bunches of broccoli come secured with are perfect for this. For me, though, I don't notice enough difference to be worth the extra effort, but then again I use a slow and gentle drawing technique. Those who suck harder or faster might find it useful.

Then again, if you are drawing that hard, are you not having a problem getting bits of biomass in your mouth? Drawing slowly helps mitigate several issues that are exacerbated by drawing too quickly:
  • Temperature regulation (and thus vapor production) - drawing too fast cools the load too quickly as cold air replaces the warm.
  • Vapor dilution - drawing too fast bringss in more fresh air from various leaks in the unit (broccoli rubber band seals one, but not all leaks).
  • Load migration - drawing quickly actually does two things to the load - it lifts the entire 'puck' out of the bowl, reducing contact area with the heated walls and bottom thereby reducing production efficiency.
  • Turbulence - this is the second type of load disruption that occurs, causing tiny bits to dislodge from the 'puck' and make their way into your mouth.
So, I recommend a slow gentle draw. A good rate would be such that it would take you a good 30 seconds to take a full hit. Alternatively, you could take repeated small gentle sips (without exhaling in between) until your lungs are full.

One thing to add - the mouthpiece. I found that when I switched to using a GONG as a mouthpiece instead of the normal glass outer stem, the draw seemed to have much more resistance.

What I *think* is going on is some clean air leaking into the outer stem via the bottom of the stem when pulled out several CM. When using a GONG as the mouthpiece, I found the draw was noticeably harder when pushed down as far as it can go. When I pulled the GONG up several cm off the bottom, the resistance was similar to the original glass mouthpiece.

@Sativape - interesting, but I believe one of the revisions Davinci made to the design very early on was to add a tiny silicon 'lip' around the oven itself where it meets the inner-stem glass piece. Does your Ascent have this tiny 0.25 - 0.5mm silicon lip around the inner glass stem?

@ Ratchett,

It was my friend's Ascent.

I do not recall the lip, but I wasn't looking for it either.

I have a feeling, that my friend's Ascent has been used excessively and the lower bowl portion has become loose. I thought that it should be tighter than what I felt.... although I do not have any experience with a new one that I can compare against.

I 've been using the Eds wooden stem exclusively over the last few weeks, has a good feel and a nice draw. I prefer the glass gong over the glass stock stock stems. I will be using either the glass gong or the Eds wooden stem with my Ascent in the future.

The glass gong definitely has a tighter draw, I like it.

If you just play around and mix and match your different pairs of stems (depending how many you have), you might find that some are virtually air tight and others you could drink through they are so leaky!

You need to match up pairs where there is virtually no leekage and you'll get the advantages of the retractable stem and the tighter draw :)

That's what I've done and I'm super happy with my glass retractable stems :)

Interesting, I have 3 pairs, (plus 1 extra outer stem, one of my glass inner stems crumbled in my hands after a 1+ week soak in ISO), but I don't see how tight you can get, there will always be several hundred microns of tolerance. When I use a GONG, I get a completely tight seal against the bottom I'm actually still undecided if I like that, or the slightly cooled intake by raising the glass up a cm or two.

my oled screed is faded on bottom... functions but kinda annoying just hope it doesn't blackout

Interesting, in the 200+ pages I've read on this thread, you're the first I've seen to report this issue. I'd call DV and request a replacement. You'll get a new one (with fresh batteries!). It's worth it IMO, if you have a second vape to use while you wait a week for your replacement!

Unfortunately not, this one is but days old and used less than 4 times, another replacement would be...something

and alas upon checking it today I can hardly tell it's on...

HONESTLY what the actual fuck I'm struggling to believe anyone actually has one of these that works. I've now had two of these and a PnP and all have crapped out within a month the most recent being gone in 3 days of sparse use and delicate touch. They said they couldn't refund me the first time and so the send me another, I pay IC and the useless thing is gone in 72 hours after 5 or so months of trying to get the fucking thing

IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET MY MONIES WORTH AROUND HERE

I sure hope they can resolve this as the situation fits well in the confines of a consumer protection claim. I don't even like the idea of another replacement as I believe the next one will be no different, they say they can't refund me and I don't want to but will try and pursue legal action instead of call this a $300 loss. Still need to send my fucking PnP back aswell.
HELLO SHIPPING AND HANDLING COSTS

I have a lengthy email thread with Aaron from customer services and waiting for a email seems easier than trying to explain this bullshit to someone over the phone although I may heed your suggestion so I can shout at someone until they fix this abomination

If the product has an advertised 2+ hour battery life and the unit breaks within that, is that false advertising?

Sometimes that happens especially with the newer vapes that are new to the marketplace. It's important that you buy from a store that will back up their product, after care is so important. Many of us have had to replace units that were defective.

Good luck with finding the vape that's right for you. It's always good to have a back up unit.

Expanding on what CarolKing said @BLaKSmith as with any technology, many of the design flaws aren't worked out until people start to actually use the device. As a programmer, I can't tell you how many times I've built a database interface, only to have my users bitch because I forgot about some tiny feature I thought was unnecessary, but they use EVERY day. The Ascent is a new device, less than a year old. While in a perfect world the bugs would all be fixed before anyone purchased it. But this isn't a perfect world, not even Apple get's it right on the first release of any product.

The OG Davinci had issues when it first came out, but since then, the product has come a long way in reliability and customer satisfaction. Davinci's customer service is fantastic, but if you have problems obtaining or shipping these vapes, maybe you should consider something more "bullet-proof"

Remember the age old KISS rule. Keep It Simple Stupid. The more complicated something is, the more likely it will be to break.

When my Ascent died, I decided to look for a stupid simple Vape with no electronic parts to break. Now I have two vapes. I only use the Ascent for long extended sessions and portable sessions. While my other vape is my daily driver with no moving parts or electronics to fail, it's a perfect combo for my needs.

Sorry about your luck

I have an Ascent that I bought from Davinci on Halloween, and my screen just died. I used the chat feature on Davinci.com, and in less than ten minutes my problem was resolved. I barely had to do anything. I am going to send my unit back, they will send a new one. It was simple.

I just don't believe that they would keep replacing their products and yet not be able to just refund me, surely that would be cheaper on both sides. I wish there was a easier way to prove your unit is defective without sending it home EVERY TIME, then they can just send another. But really is there no testing time? How can it break so fast it doesn't make sense, when my PnP stopped working it was obvious but this seems to slowly passed away in the night and left a ghost in the morning.

Been thinking on a solo, but its rather large, I know at some point I'm gonna wanna use it outside so portable, I think I prefer convection to conduction unless it's done right but I'd still like all glass.

I've smoked since it broke I had hope I could cope but I know there's a long way to go.
In other news just got some decent blue cheese, would be nice to vape it :(

Just realized a possible issue withy vape. Where the bowl connects to the main body. It seems looser then normal? Should I be worried? Has any one heard of breaking off

They have had some problems with the wiring around the hinge of the unit, I haven't heard lately with a loose hinge. When I open mine, I don't open it all the way. Just to be on the safe side.

The Ascent is an awesome portable vaporizer, when you get one without flaws. I really enjoy mine. I have had mine since last October. The first unit I bought in August, one of the first group shipped out. It had a couple of issues like air leaks at the hinge and a cracked bowl.

When I sent my first unit back I had great service with Davinci. They promptly responded to my emails and turnaround time was only 2 weeks, but I live in the US.

Davinci is a good company to do business with IMO.

The Solo isn't that big and you can get an Eds stem for portability. The Solo is about the size of a can of Red bull. With the newer model Solos, there are some faulty units. There have been some revisions to the newer models, where you can charge and use at the same times also a longer battery life .... You can check out the Solo threads. Just read the last 30 pages.

Do you deal with MassDrop or DV themselves for warranty processes? If it's through MD, I'd rather buy direct.
I would assume you deal with DV since Massdrop is more a fundraiser than a normal retailer. I know the MFLB warranty is extraordinarily amazing but I dealt with MF rather than MD. Also, if your buying from CA there will be taxes since the company is based in Palo Alto.

I suggest this is not a good time for assumptions, unless you're really keen on gambling? As I've said several times in discussions in this area, you (as buyer) have no warranty claims on DV. You have no contract there, no 'quid pro quo' (you've given DV nothing of value) they have zero legal obligation to deal with you (even to the point of answering questions).

It might be that MD has an agreement in place with DV that you can gain support through, but in the end the only legal recourse you have is with the guy you have a contract with, in this case MD.

The fact that MF honors warranty in a much larger way is great......for them and their customers. Aside from a good example we wish all makers would follow (but not raise the price we pay to cover it of course.....) it's completely meaningless in this case.

If it were my money, I'd verify who will stand behind it if there are troubles (which seems to happen a fair bit???). MD saying 'DV will cover it' is pretty thin I think (unless you get DV to verify it), if you can prove MD actually promised this to you (saying it in an email doesn't count, it has to be in the contracted term of sale) you might have a claim with MD if that doesn't happen, but DV can blow you off. MD cannot commit a third party. That too is 'settled law'.

Understand that DV might either want to 'abandon' you, or be forced to by their own Dealers. Those Dealers my well be abiding by MFRP and other requirement and not be very happy about losing sales to those who aren't? I've been there on this one in a former life......

I'd check, unless you're willing to risk owning a lemon with no recourse. Peace of mind has real value, IMO. In the end you just want to enjoy your new vape, warranty concerns can be a factor there even if it works just fine.
