It's an interesting idea. Kind of a small load. Always being used upside down it probably doesn't need a screen, especially using nugs. I have been finding I am overcooking my loads and this would help with that...

I always pack it securely enough that nothing would fall out even if it weren't inverted.
I mostly use it inverted myself, but i've used convection mode upright many times without incident.
It works great for bag fill as well, you'll be amazed at the difference in flavor versus stock.

Also, it's very unlikely you're overcooking your loads.
Stock 400 does achieve dark chocolate colored depleted ABV, but it is well away from any combustion.

Well, it has been very dark and occasionally nearly black. Being cheap as I am I am trying to get every last bit of "effect" from my loads, but I don't want to defeat the purpose of going to vaping.

No worries, the temperature range is unable to reach combustion. the HA is just very efficient.
Borderline black finished results with the HA are certainly a possibility, but combustion is not.
It was designed with the intention of extracting as much as possible short of combustion, and it does so very effectively.
Be proud of how dark and uniformly extracted you can get your full, unground pieces.
No other vape on the market can achieve those same results.

the tweak of which we speak:

X1WZSVv.jpg

So, you just dig the ABV out after? I'm sure it won't tap out.

As long as it is a coarse enough screen I can't see how it would be in the way of anything or interrupt your ability to use the TonG more traditionally if you wanted. Maybe a little messier.

Which reminds me of a question. On the screen on my regular MP I have been getting a goo. Is this reclaimable? I burned some off on the spoon and it gave off black smoke, which was not very attractive...

I never reclaimed anything when I combusted, and I didn't intend to now, but if it were that easy I might. I have to scrape the screen anyway.

I either use the tool that came with the HA to pick it out or just blow it out like a straw.
The latter is the most simple solution but requires something to blow into.

Yes, you can still use the TonG completely normally with the screen in the deeper position.

That goo is buildup often called vape honey. It is reclaimable by scraping or with iso.
The hardened honey on the screen will likely not be very potent, as it has seen a lot of heat.
Whether it is worth salvaging or not will vary from person to person. Only one way to find out.
The runny and sticky honey buildup inside the MP tube is definitely worth keeping in my experience.
It is a surprisingly potent concentrate.

After many decades of indulging that is something else I have never seen or even heard of before I started learning and reading about vaping. Oils and wax and concentrates didn't exist (as far as I know) in the MJ unfriendly states I've lived in. Maybe that is naive as I know nothing about crack either and that is everywhere now, but I would have thought I might know about other ways of consuming weed. As medical product and availability has spread, so has all this info, and frankly thank the earth mother. So many people lives are made better.
Sorry, off the box, but I find this all quite fascinating.

Thanks to MG23 and everyone else for the Tong screen explanation, especially the photo. I think I prefer this idea to my "mini-crucible", as I have not been using my HA very often for a while due to the "train effect". i.e. having to keep going so as to not waste any, and ending up vaped out your tiny mind - when you really hadn't intended and hadn't wanted to. Means you can better control how stoned you want to get. Had enough? Worry not, the rest will not be used up by the HA. Excellent news!

As I said before, this was the only downside to the HA for me, and now I have the solution. Perfect! Who needs anything else?

Glad to hear you're finding this method satisfactory as well!
The flavor and convenience of convection mode are really top notch.
The only time I use the 'traditional method' anymore is when I need to use over .2, which is very rarely.

I haven't made a mini crucible yet so I haven't yet used the TonG. I will try to find a 3/8" screen or cut one down and give this a try. I don't have a scale yet (one is in the mail) so I don't really know what .2g looks like, or how much in weight I am currently using per session. A completely covered crucible bottom 2 to 5mm deep is about normal for me so far. I have yet to do a half filled crucible. I am usually not sharing.

Tell me that this is the way I will always use my HA going forward so I can rationalize spending $6 on 3/8" screens... ;)

This is like buying a house. I have spent nearly as much on peripherals as I did on the HA...

.2 isn't a mandatory amount; it's a rough maximum due to space limitation with this method.

If you are spending $6 on screens hopefully you are getting over 75 of them.
Here is an ebay link for 75 3/8" SS screens for just over 5 bux: >>Click Here<<

As far as spending nearly as much on peripherals as you did on the vape...how?
The bub was only around 30 and you got the TonG for free due to a mistake, no?
I hope you didn't spend 100+ on aftermarket silicone tubing.

OK, ya got me. "Nearly as much " was an exaggeration. Then again, I'm sure I'm not done... :)

Let's see: $14 on silicone, $14 on a scale, $29 on glass (so far), $3 on screens, $6 on a reducer (came in pairs). We won't count the movie I bought to get over the $35 needed for free shipping. ;)

So, you are right. Nowhere near $200. But I'm just sayin...

I understood that the .2g wasn't mandatory, but I can only estimate weight so far. I have an old analog triple-beam but it's useless at measurements this small. I would guess that the amount I am using in the crucible (say 4 mm) is probably close to the .2g.

Oh, and yeah, the $6 was for 75 screens. If this becomes the favored way than I'm sure I will use them. I may start with 10 around $2, tho.

10 for 2 is a good deal.
Stainless steel is tough, they should last a long time.
75 screens will last you a very long time.
Either way you go, seems very fair for the amount of use you'll get from them.
You can also torch or iso them clean to make them last much longer.

Also, you really don't need a reducer for the D020 + TonG HA combo.
The TonG tapers to both 14mm and 18mm so it fits naturally without any additional pieces.
If anything using a reducer will lower overall stability due to a much higher center of gravity.

Well, of course. :) NBD, $10 (it turns out) won't break me. It's on the way. I'll probably find a use later...

How much should I cut off the crucible to use it with the Tong?

I think 1/8" is probably ok, but I thought someone said 1/4"...

So, with more time to search I found the posts on it. It appears that The Shrike came up with the idea and at least NicleyToasted and McNerdius have done it. I am going to try it and I want to keep as much crucible depth as possible for the most (potential) goods as possible. 1/4" is what was mentioned. For you guys that have done this, is that the minimum that can be cut off to use the crucible with the TonG? It looks to me just eyeballing it that the TonG needs only a hair over 1/8".

Measure twice cut one and all that. I am having a buddy who has a dremel do this for me or I would just experiment...

If i'm reading you right, your eyeballing is correct. Roughly 1/8" trimmed from the crucible is minimum to fit for use with tong, 3/16" to be sure.

Cool. Thank you muchly. :) I have noticed that the TonG fits tighter than the regular MP. I can't even get it in the whole way unless the HA is hot. I thought about trimming it slightly and the decided tighter is probably better, especially if there is a chance it won't always be perpendicular.

mine was pretty tight at first too, when both were cold. After the first week or so of using it the tong a "warm together, cool together" fashion, it was loose enough to spin when both are cold.

I think that made sense, lol...

Kind of interesting, since I have been using the TonG I have noticed the tightness issue reverse. It is very loose in a cold HA and gets much tighter after heating, which is better for stability when inserted in glass.
