(ABV) Cannabis Salve

IMO make QWISO with it then use that. I used everclear (foolishly) on my ABV to make 3 grams of ABV hash oil. Since its ABV it is already decarbed, so I have 3g of decarbed hash waiting in a slick stack until I have time to make some kind of balm for it.

To be honest I'm thinking of just buying something already made, like dixie's CBD balm, then just gently heat and mix in the hash oil.

whats a good method for reducing the QWISO into oil? Alcohol wont blend into a salve so I assume you evaporate it off but what temp range is safe not to cook off the beneficial compounds?

You don't need to go very hot with the QWISO. If you want you can be patient and let it evap naturally, it'll take days to a week depending on the amount. You can greatly speed this up with a fan, and some low heat under it. I don't have a temp range to give you, but I'd say keep the oil itself under 100 degrees. You don't NEED heat at all. I have a batch of everclear hash evaporating right now. I had gentle heat under it, but while I can't monitor it while I'm at work, I just let it evap naturally. High proof alcohol will evap at room temp easily, just slowly.

That's a great guideline to start thank you darkroom :). With so many people and pets in my house I cant do the natural evap so id need to have it done within a few hours. I have the house to myself after about 11pm most nights so if I can have it done by 2am im good to go.

I've heard of people using reptile warmers, but I use a griddle. Just plug it in and turn it on SLOWLY. Get it to the lowest temp that it'll actually turn on at, usually way below any of the marked temps on the dial. Then add a fan to that mix and you should be golden. Smaller runs evaporate faster due to less alcohol needed to extract.

Its funny, I love the extraction process and all the science, but I feel bothered by the part where I turn my 3g decarbed ABV oil into balm lol.

Ok so for some canna-oil ive gathered plenty of methods (goingback and forth between the jar/crock pot water bath method vs oil/water/herb crock pot method) anyway i couldnt gather as much as id hoped materials wise.I need some relief for the skin issues ive got going on an dont want to wait to save up more ABV or try to catch a shake sale at the end of the month.

So if i do a 1 gram per ounce (should i go by weight or fluid ounce on the oil?) would that be used straight or diluted in a salve recipe? I dont want to waste the potency but most oils call for far more per ounce of oil than i can deal with. Any advice?

I make a lot of things just like I cook, no measuring...just toss things together and wing it. Works for me.

If making a small amount I would suggest putting the ABV you have in a small mason jar, add enough oil to cover the herb well, stirring to be sure it's all wet, then add a teeny bit extra oil to be sure there is some stirring room. Then proceed with extraction in the jar, in a saucepan of water.

I just completed mine last night that I've been working on since Friday. After extraction in coconut oil I added some other things before pouring into final jar (almond oil, shea butter, vit E for preservation and a litttle beeswax to firm it up). I also use one side of electric hand mixer to thoroughly mix everything in the jar while still hot.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Hi Lo sorry it took me so long really overwhelmed this week. If i mix it up by eye like you mention is that concentrated or ready to use? I have some 8oz wide mouth short mason jars would one of those seal well enough? They are barely 3 inches tall to the rim. If it is a concentrated how much per ounce of other materials would you recommend? Like say 1 oz of the infusion to 4 oz other oils/wax maybe?

I couldnt find me e-oil so i bought more today as soon as a find something that can fit in the crock pot to keep the jar off the bottom i will begin infusing

After extraction the coconut oil is ready to use. Can use in cooking or proceed with salve. If you scroll back in the thread you can get an idea of raitios. I just add a little Vit. E, Shea and Almond Oil...then I melt beeswax to incorporate. I'd guess my ratio of wax is about 15-20% of oil volume but it isn't necessary. You can use the coconut oil as is if you prefer.

To keep jar off bottom of crock pot you can use a washcloth and add water - rest jar on top of washcloth. For small batches I don't even bother with crock - I use a small saucepan on the stove.

Thanks Lo. Since you sai you dulute it in salve at that ratio i take it that the base infusion is considered concentrated. I cant stay standing long enough to deal with a sauce pan hence the crock. Thanks for the tip about the wash cloth :).

Hey all. I didnt see anything int he rules about it but since it topic relevant i hope its ok to ask here :). Are we allowed to post pictures? Specifically of the progress my skin issue has been having in regards to topical cannabis? The skin area is on my stomach nothing too low or too high that it would be considered vulgar but i wanted to check in.

I got a freebie in one of my last orders and since i havent had time to make my own cream/salve ive been using it for a week and im really excited to see improvement. I found pics like that other places and they were helpful to me in making a decision to try it this way but i dont know the limits about pics on here.

I love hearing/seeing skin improvements. I have such skin inflammation issues.

Ok i started taking pics to compare so sunday is picture day from now on :). A week seems like a good interval to see progress. I wish i had taken a pic 3 weeks ago when it was just barely coming down off a flare it already looks SO different in that time. Best part though of the short term is that after a week the itching was nearly gone!

Now its minimal and can typically be ignored whereas before it would keep me and sometimes wake me up. The rasied bits of fresh inflamation are nearly flat now too :). I nee to find one of my tank tops to take a pic of. All of my light ones have been stained by the seeping and scabs (sorry for the TMI there). I didnt count specifically but its been over a week since ive had any bleeding.

Thus far all very promising to see after having it so long. Ive had some degree of it since 2009 but this 12-16 months have been the worst. So glad to find relief away from the pharmacy

I made a kind of balm last week to help with some strained muscles as well as to attempt to help a friend with a pinched sciatic nerve (although I was quite doubtful it would help). I started by making half a cup of cannabis infused coconut oil, heating 7g of fresh bud for ~20 hours in a crockpot, the result was potent and effective. I used fresh herb so that I could get a sense of how higher potency would affect the final balm.

I then took about a half of that (so, a quarter cup of the coconut oil I infused) and melted in some beeswax, almond oil, sunflower oil, and shea butter flakes (I can't remember my proportions, found a lotion recipe online and modified that). It was super easy to make, definitely some room for improvement and modification, and I'm in the process of testing.

So far it seems to dull (but not completely alleviate) my muscle aches and I regret not adding in some essential oils to add some fragrance; I can't detect any typical pot odors but I'm still a little wary around other people, especially at work.

Do people experience psychoactive effects from these topicals? And if so, how does it compare to say ingesting the same ammount of infused cannabinoids orally?

Would DMSO be beneficial, or is there a more "natural" carrier oil that is preferred? I have read that coconut oil isn't the best for this applicaton?

Old thread, I know, but the answer is still valid for anyone wondering. Emu Oil is very easily absorbed by the skin.

But I like it!
I've been reading about cannabis patches, and someone suggested DMSO as a good addition to help with transfer. I've never used it tho, so following to learn more :)

DMSO would be useful for an application like patches where you're dealing with a small contact area and concentrated actives in small volume, and you need an effective carrier.

It's interesting stuff. Very powerful at what it does though, so you have to be careful. If you got concentrated amounts of it splashed on your hands, you'd want to watch what you touch before you wash as anything toxic would now absorb very quickly into your body. It's serious and should be researched and used with appropriate caution.

I know people use tiny amounts to increase absorption of sublingual entheogen extracts as well (pharmauasca drops). It could potentially be similarly combined with cannabis tinctures to make them faster acting orally/sublingually... I haven't paid attention to that sort of thing in a while and I haven't looked into the 'state of the art' for cannabis salves much yet, so I'm not sure if it's being used already in the commercial products being sold in med/rec shops. I do know Emu oil is being used in commercial cannabis salves already though.

I want to make a atrithtis pain salve for a person I love.

AVB plus fresh bud.

Do I need to carboxylate the fresh bud when I use a slowcooker for 6-8 hours ?
The temperature on the loe settings is around 210F.

Can i skip the decarboxy step in the oven or am I missing something ?

thanks
