Putting Bud In The Freezer?

So, I've been hearing about putting your bud in your grinder with a nickel in it. I have a few questions:

1. What is the purpose of this? In case this is relevant to me, I have a four piece santa cruz shredder.

2. Should the bud already be ground up before putting it in the freezer.

3. What's the longest it should stay in the freezer?

4. Does this adversely affect the quality for vaping? (I use the Solo)

The purpuse is to stiffen and ease the separation of the kief from the flowers. Grounded sounds better for this purpose of this. As much as needed to freeze the kief.

Number 4, Im under the impression that hot/cold cycles harshens the vapors. Same potency, but harsher vapors.

And I would shake that herb and nickel and herb in a cheap 4 piece grinder. I cant conciously nick the inside of my $$$ scs.

freezes the trichs causes them to fall through the kief screen better use a marble instead of a coin so you don't catch any tiny metal shavings

I would never put my bud in the freezer.
Iwien - I think i get what you're saying: fresh bud minus the trychs dilutes the herb for vaping. A solution to that detractor can be to ONLY freeze the herb intended primarily for kief.

Kief, as we know, is a whole other level of experience that requires less and gives you more than herb alone in similar dose. However, the herb used needn't be discarded, as it hasn't been completely stripped bare. And, there are those times when just a mild effect from our vape is just what the doctor ordered. It's all good!

Yeah. I'll just take an extra hit if I want an extra boost. No right or wrong though. I just never found a valid reason to separate the trichs from the bud.
Freezing can also be a good step in the process of making a nice QWISO tincture;)

That's how I made my last batch of tincture, except I used grain alcohol. :)

Yeah ISO should never be intentionally ingested. It's not like a drop of it will kill you, but large doses can definitely be lethal. This website says the lethal does of ISO is ~8 oz.

And as for the question in the OP, I personally see no point in separating the kief if your end goal is to vape it unprocessed. The only reason I'd do a dry sift is if I'm making hash and want to reduce the amount of starting material (this helps decrease solvent costs).

The freezer/coin method is fairly crude IMO; while it does work, it doesn't really create a quality product. You lose both potency and flavor from the ground weed and the extracted "kief". Since the weed is so brittle from the freezer, it's ends up getting crushed fine enough to fit through the screen and degrades the kief (turns it from gold to green).

A theoretical reason to separate keif in this fashion could be not just to physically separate, but to separate the spectrums. For example keif = trichromes = a more thc-dominant effect, compared to what is left which could provide a more cbd-dominant effect. So maybe the keif in daytime and the remaining bud at night.
