Coughing from vapor? Will it ever stop?

Hello guys,

Recently new to vapor, had a VG for 2 weeks and just got my SSV working yesterday.

I find that I'm coughing an absolutely extraordinary amount on any vapor hit of a decent size. It's very clean vapor, no scorching/black at all, low temp.

I've been smoking 60/40 cannabis/tobacco for the past 10 years and besides the first few weeks back when I was a teenager, I have never coughed since then, I could smoke 20 joints in a day and not give a single hack.

Is it just because I'm not used to straight cannabis? Or is it the vapor in general? It's a different kind of cough, more like a reflex. It's not very painful, just REALLY annoying, I can't take full hits (probably only get 20% of my lung capacity) and its very loud.

Anyone else cough like mad when they first started vaporizing but later on got used to it?

My lungs are feeling better, but god damn I'm coughing 24/7.

Probably, the reason is, is that there is more THC in the vapor than what you are used to. THC is a lung irritant. The other reason, is that with smoke, you get some warning signs due to the toxins, that you are reaching your lung capacity. Being that the vapor is free from those toxins, you are not getting those warning signs until it's too late and you cough your brains out.

Solution............take smaller hits. As soon as you feel the vapor in your mouth............stop the hit.

Try cooling the vapor, if you have a bong try running the vapor thru it with some ice or cold water.
If that is not an option I suggest the following:
rinse your mouthpiece in cold water before using,
taking a sip before a draw,
vape at lower temperature if possible,
do not allow your wand to sit in vape between draws, applicable only if your using hands free.

if this helps and you do not have a bong I recommend looking into a water filter or a bong.

Some people are more sensitive to vapor than others. I hope the above helps you.

Bong adapter is the next thing on my list.

Dunno if it will help though, seems like a pure THC cough, nothing hurts at all, it just seem to be (hitting the SSV right now) a type of spasm in my lungs.

Hopefully I can get used to it, because atm I'm getting 20 SSV hits off 0.2g, would love to take monster hits.

When I quit smoking cigarettes I coughed non-stop for a while. I had heard that people who were long term smokers have a "layer" of tar and whatnot lining the lungs, and it's not until you quit when your body starts to be able to remove it (by coughing it up), so I just assumed that's what my problem was.

I'm not sure how applicable this is to your situation, but you make mention of having up to twenty of the those 60/40 cannabis/tobacco joints a day over the last 10 years, so I can't help but think your problem may be similar. Did or do you smoke regular cigarettes? Have you given up combusting tobacco entirely now that you have been vaporizing?

Try some hits of an indecent size. I think most of us tend to hit a little on the large side. You keep inhaling until you feel the vapor start to irritate your throat or expand in your lungs, and by that time it's sometimes too late and you've overtoked. Cutting your hits short isn't as satisfying, but if you're having coughing issues....

My wife has a problem with PD hits, and she's using 6" of tubing with a 3" mouthpiece on the end. And back when we were both cig smokers, she went through two packs a day to my one (or even half a pack). I just tell her to stop taking so much vapor per hit. Cut the hit short.

I've never been much of a cougher. My lungs aren't the best anymore (which is why I love vapor so much), but I've always been able to hold my hits with the best of 'em. The vapes that have bothered me the most have been ones that deliver a lot of air-more of a throat irritation than lung issue. OTOH I can definitely take bigger hits from my SSV than I can handle, and too many big ones from that vape will bother my lungs, but I still avoid coughing 99% of the time.

yup, i agree with max: take smaller hits

on a lung capacity scale of -5 to +5 (-5 being all air pushed out of your lungs and +5 being lungs absolutely full, 0 is how full your lungs are when the musles are completely relaxed and neutral air pressure) i usually will only take a vapor hit from -3 to +3, and then +4 is fresh air. if i try to take a vapor hit up to +5 im always on the floor coughing, even if im hitting the pd
(btw i didnt make up this lung measurement scale, its a quantification method that is used by vocalists and wind instrument players usually, but it fits so i use it here)

taking a smaller hit and some fresh air afterwards really helps, as well as adding moisture to the vapor (like vaporbonging does)
