Is there an easy way to make sure its not a first gen model?
look inside the bowl; if it is black ceramic you have a first gen, if it is metal you have one of the later generations.

Keep in mind this is not an indication of quality or worth; first gen solos are kind of sought after by those who want the higher temperature range. The only thing that will wear out is the battery.

It's almost certainly not the first generation. As has been said, it had a ceramic bowl. Since there is no model number, the only sure way to know is 'does it heat with the charger plugged in'? If it does, it's the newest version. If, OTOH, it doesn't heat (only charges) then it's the older (most common by far) version that has true PA mode. IMO a great find as Pipes points out. Congrats.

Newer is not always better, as you can read all about here?

Yup, pretty easy to hate a guy like that, isn't it? I mean if he wasn't already giving you all them other reasons and all........

Knowing Ataxian that's probably the pool at some condo complex he doesn't even live in. He'd do that......

*******My Cleaning Technique*********

Hey guys. Last night I gave one of my Solo's stems a cleaning and thought I'd share my technique as it's simple and a procedure worth passing on.
I was going to post last night but by the time I was done.....well, it was too effective and I lost the ability to think very clearly..:ko:

First thing is to have the proper tools for the job. I have a flat dental spatula I got from a kit of picks and such.

SlolClean8_zps2e6c5210.jpg

Works quite well to get 90% of the sweetness out. Notice I do not use a screen so the goo has a few chucks in it. No matter as I add it back to a loads worth of herb.

SlolClean1_zpsca809627.jpg

SlolClean2_zpsd756da4c.jpg

SlolClean3_zps8a7ab67c.jpg

I continue until I get as much as possible with the tool. Then I pull out my small torch and heat the lower part and get a few puffs directly from the stem this way. Great head rushes at that point......

SlolClean5_zps460d68ce.jpg
SlolClean6_zps443eb697.jpg

Look, some of the honey has travelled up the tube from the heat of vaping the lower part. Have to scoop that up and add to the herb-goo mix. Gerb..

I then clean the stem with ISO.
Followed by the well deserved session.

SlolClean7_zpsc770103a.jpg

The session(s) were freaking endless. It went for 3 FULL 12 minute with end to end clouds and even went into a fourth bout but the taste was getting burny tasting and I needed to concentrate on crawling up to bed.

It was good to the last blue vapor cloud!
I posted the wrong photo again!

The CAISEN I added to use as a carb.
Time to take more photo's!

Anyone know of any other place that sells the 14mm GonG attachment? I have been going on Planetvape for the last couple of weeks and they seem to be perpetually out of stock.

That doesn't make a lot of sense, unless they're trying to put PV out of the HES business? Won't the larger stem stretch the seal out and make everything else but that one stem too loose? You know, like the bent one that's a PITA when loose? I think it's a safe thing to say far more guys object to loose bent stems than straight? Many of us are used to PD and other stem vapes where loose doesn't start to describe the fit.

It doesn't seem like a good way to fix loose stems somehow.....tighten one up by making all the rest looser?

My take is this will make the o-ring all the more useful?

If you have a glass blower in your town, why not have him add a 14mm connection to your aroma therapy bowl that comes with your set? He punched a hole into bowl and I added a small screen. Has room for nice big loads. It works great and cost me only $20.00 and no shipping.
Of course an 18mm connection could be used instead for those who need it.

I like to recycle and MacGuyver useless stuff. Built a used video game and computer business that way. Operated "under the radar" for years until the corporations got wind of what the small operations were doing and took most of it over. This kind of thing helps keep small business alive in America. I know your local glass blower would appreciate the business.

Yea I read your reply after posting that, sorry. Its funny because a few weeks ago I wax experimenting using a mushed up SS Hercules coil in my E-Nano for this very purpose. Worked, but was impractical... also didnt like the tiny metal links that were chaffing off all over the place after cutting it. Do the Volcano liquid pads act the same way after cutting?

Id like to give the S&B pad a try, but I cant seem to find them for sale at very many places (that I'm familiar with or that are within the USA).

Aside from PV, where do you guys usually get them from?
You can do this many ways but what was working for me is a fine metal wool folded into a football then then say cut in half. After torching to burn off oils etc, the uncut tip goes against the glass screen, and the cut end pointing towards the oven floor. Then pressure applied so the cut ends are a little below the edge of the stem, but sticking "up". Once the stem is slightly warmed, a dab melts into the fibers that are very fine and can hold a huge amount of oil/wax. The folded fibers are continuous and carry heat well into the core. Of course some shreds have to be shaken out. The wool material ideally is Stainless Steel, but Bronze or Plain steel can be used temporarily.

The other way I llike better is to get a Volcano pad and unfold it gently until you are holding like a tube sock some 2-3 inches in diameter. Cut off say a third and shake out any pieces . The wire is one wire so it can be cut without creating a lot of shrapnel. Then you can press the loose woven tube back together but with the diameter to fit inside the stem. Do not cut again and you will have a pad made of one continuous wire. This Stainless is very taste-neutral. You can find the pads on ebay under Volcano Liquid Pad.

Yea ive been meaning to order up some of those pads. Do guys iso soak these things before use?

Edit: ordered! Gotvape has them and they take PayPal unlike the ebay sellers.

@OF @fernand what do you use to cut these Volcano pads as not to mangle them? Is one layer of pad enough or do I need to "layer up"?

Double edit: I was picturing cutting out a small circle of material thats the diameter of the gong. Im now rereading and youre suggesting folding up and stuffing a larger diameter piece into said gong?

Anyone have pictures of this?

@Caligula See how the mesh unfolds into a "tube"? To quote a fine film of bygone days, "One Shot", try to only clip the Volcano wire once, well, maybe two times. You cut yourself maybe 1/3 of a 30mm one, torch it, then keep corralling it back together, sort of like it was, but smaller, and into the stem. Just one layer, continuous wire. That should give you the best heat. Works well for me, but it seems hotter in the throat than the finer wool pad.

p.s. See the green rubber band on the Solo? Limits overtightening on the lid. On the bottom screws they are IMHO very tight, easily crack the base. Loosening them a bit seems rational.

I cant wait to try this with my E Nano. Ive been looking for something to replace this organic cotton with for a while.

This should provide an interesting experiment. At least it comes with two "pucks", so I can try first with a backup in tow.

@OF @fernand what do you use to cut these Volcano pads as not to mangle them?

Hard to explain, but it makes sense when you play with it. It's all one wire, it's woven into a 'Chinese finger trap' of sorts, what I once called a chain mail condom. The tube can be long and narrow or short and wide. If you cut the tube exactly at right angles you cut the wire only once, it's easy to cut it (scissors work well for me) and then shake or pluck out the odd strands that got cut and you have only one tiny end left, not much bigger than a hair really. Then just stuff the piece you cut off in the stem. It's a bit of 'cut and try' but I'd say starting with it stretched thin (easiest to cut and deal with) six inches is a good start?

I also found I like the bad a little less tightly packed than the factory one comes, easier air flow. You can put too much oil in if you don't pay attention.

Yeah, I ran the broken down pad through the ultrasonic cleaner in a jar of ISO when I first started messing with it. Next time I might try a detergent and water wash or just go straight to flaming it before use. The pad seems very clean to start with.

Good luck with it, I think it does a good job once you get it sorted out.

@OF, Chain mail Condom is great. It's what the Teutonic Knights carried when they raped and pillaged their neighbors' lands ;-) Torching kinda trumps washing for cleaning the wire. The way they pack it is sort of how you fold a pair of socks onto itself, and repeat it. I couldn't see how one could finger-pack it too tight, it never blocks airflow, and I think a dense mesh to hold more oil and slow air are a good thing. The much thinner wires of a (Stainless Steel) wool might offer advantages, like having a chance to cool the vapor a bit. When I packed it too loose I thought it was quite hot/harsh, it kind of makes sense.

@OF the picture @fernand posted cleared a lot up but so did your single strand description.

So if im following correctly, I need to unravel that net, then coil up my own "Puck" inside the desired gong/stem with a single long strand?

@ataxian im using/want to use these materials as a medium to hold my shatter/oil. Im sure youre already familiar with the McFinns cotton method.

A bit coarse, perhaps, but a true family heirloom, handed down from father to son......

No, leave the net woven, simply tease the pad apart and straighten it out. Imagine if you'd stuffed a nylon stocking into a toilet paper tube, packing it real tight. You want to straighten it back out then cut a section off it. Then stuff that piece in in a random manner and you're ready to test.

Poke at the pad a bit, it kind of flakes apart, but it's all one piece really. Fun stuff.
