A question about log vapes

I just adopted a UD from someone on the classifieds and I wanna keep it looking nice. I've noticed a lot of people with log vapes end up getting cracks/splits in the wood near the lip by the heaters. Anyone have some insight into why this occurs (something to do with moisture in the wood) and how to prevent it (generous applications of underbutter)?

Some woods are more prone to cracking than others. And even within the same type of wood, you have variables like how long it was cured as well as grain structure. If the wood is prone to cracking near the heater, I don't really think that there is anything one can do to prevent it. Either it happens or it doesn't.

My original Cherry PD had a small crack near the heater but it didn't get any larger and I buttered the fuck out of that vape.

Damn, guess I'll just have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

I too have a crack in my UD, however in my case it was already there, I bought it as a lost dog. I can't remember how old my UD is, I just know I got it somewhere in january or so, and it wasn't this year, I guess my UD is 2 years old or so.
anyway, the point I was about to make, my UD still only has that crack it had in the beginning, no additional cracks have appeared yet, while it has been on every day or almost every day since I got it(I do turn it off every night though). I regularly apply underbutter, but I have no fixed shedule for that. just now and then, the underbutter I got with my UD isn't even halfway, maybe I used 1/4 of it or so. so I wouldn't worry too much.

If it's already had some use you probably don't have to worry. Cracks usually show up pretty quick. If you get one, it may stay small and it may get worse, but there's nothing you can do to prevent it.

That's comforting. I got it used so it should be pretty old and there aren't any cracks/splits yet. Hopefully it stays that way cause I really like this thing. I'm able to get like 7 hits from such a small amount of material that it doesn't even register on my .1g resolution scale. It's also very aesthetically pleasing. I love the rustic look of the wood.

Vapes with small bowls (most often log vapes, but the Vapolution, for one, also qualifies) are great for stretching your supply and/or keeping your tolerance low. I have an EVO handy but I don't use it all the time. Sometimes I just need/want some smaller hits. I often find I'm good for a while after just a few small hits.
