18mm Glass Roasting Tube

I have been looking for a solution to the problem of securely holding a screen inside of an 18mm roasting tube and having it easy to change out / clean. It had to be all glass and fit multiple configurations. I was thinking that it had to be done by a glass blower. I was wrong. I just needed the right adapter pieces to fit together with a screen. The clip holds it securely and gives you a handle to hold. The screen (started as 5/8") won't fit all the way through the fitting but can't get back out since it is supported by the 18mm male fitting. The distance to the screen is just right. This only works with 18mm male fittings that are 22mm long otherwise it would push the screen all the way through. The bottom piece can adapt to whatever you need. The concept works equally well with 14mm joints and requires a 1/2" screen. The OCD is the only vaporizer I know with a 14mm glass connection though.
The 18mm version will work with the any wand style vaporizer with an 18mm male connection (which I believe is the Cloud, MagickWand, Versa, GTV, herborizer, Verdamper, and Glow Pro). If the top chamber was male to female, then it would work with the LSV and EV-2.

It has been working really well. The glass does not get too hot for the clip. Only the top fitting gets hot. Cleaning will be a snap.

It is just too simple of a design that I can't keep it to myself so I thought I would share it with the vapor world.

Was thinking about how I could use the 18mm glass roasting tube in an inverted orientation when it occurred to me that all I needed to do was install a 1" screen in the middle of the FtF adapter. Now I can use it with the heater unit in an upright position. A HT could be used if the MtM adapter was 18mm to 18mm. If the MtM adapter as replaced with an 18mm to hose connector, it could be used as a whip with any box vaporizer. I have just been connecting a silicone Turbo Tube onto the end of the 14mm fitting and it works great for direct draw.
When using in an inverted orientation, the material lays on the bottom (1") screen until you take a hit at which time it gets pulled up against the top screen. The material falls back down to the bottom screen after the hit which has the effect of stirring the material. The roast is always so even since the hot air coming in is diffused by the 1" screen. Since the hot air is always hitting the 1" screen first, it doesn't get dirty. The other nice thing about it is that you never have material in contact with the 18mm male end of the heater unit which means it should stay cleaner much longer.
To load the tube I place enough material in the FtF adapter to just cover the 1" screen in the center. Then I drop the smaller screen into the adapter followed by my choice of 18mm adapter fitting. To unload the tube I remove the 18mm adapter fitting and push in on one side of the smaller screen until if flips which allows me to remove it. The design allows for the 18mm adapter fitting to be changed half way through the roast if desired. I might use a direct draw at lower temperatures for flavor and then switch to water filtration for higher temperatures.
Really enjoying the versatility of this roasting tube.

If you use an 18/18 male too, and you cap the end with an EQ dome cap you'll have double the fun IMO

@Caligula - The EV-2 has an 18mm connection. The nano tube is less than 10mm so there would be too much air leakage.

@Zangano Cruel - Thanks. The modular design allows many different configurations. It is fun to build it yourself.

@bagelbanger - You are correct. It isn't meant for the HI. It is made for anything with an 18mm GonG connection. Too bad it can't really be called an invention since it is just two objects connected together. Thanks though. The screen happens to fit just right.

I posted this to another thread but thought you might find it interesting as I use it with a friends HI. He has some 14m connections from you that work very well but we've had pretty good times using this with a HI. More or less the same as some of the other fittings, just slightly more airflow.

It's basically a 18m vapor bros gong connection with the "funnel" end shaved off a bit and flame polished with a torch. Then grabbed some silicone tubing and wedged a screen and finished with an o-ring to grab when it gets hot and to make it look cool. Again, the water spots are just condensation from blowing through it.

Very nice roasting tube bagelbanger. Silicone Turbo Tube is still my favorite roasting tube. Although I have been using my new 18mm glass roasting tube the most lately. I have an 18mm fitting with a straight section of tubing connected that works great for direct draw. It is 22 mm long so it works just right. I have never tried a roasting tube with more airflow. Very little restriction at all.

Here are some photos of the 18mm glass roasting tube with the two screen configuration. It is always easier to explain with a photo. I am able to use fine mesh for both screens so the glass stays much cleaner. The smaller screen is shown on top of the 1" screen in the top photo for a size comparison. I tried to get an angle that would show the two screens and the chamber it forms between them. The tube must be opened up to load, but then never needs to be opened for stirring. It functions similar to the ELB in that it can be placed in any orientation without spilling. The ELB cap could be used in place of the smaller screen if you happen to have one. The small flat screen is a lot cheaper and easier to clean.
I had ordered some 18mm x 22mm glass fittings which have a length of glass tube attached. It fits perfectly into the 18mm FtF adapter for holding the smaller screen in place. It may have taken over top spot for my favorite roasting tube. At least for 18mm glass style vaporizers anyhow. I do have another cool roasting tube for the HI as well.
I am using a Kill-o-Watt meter as the power level indicator for my 18mm glass style vaporizer. 10 watts gives exceptionally good tasting vapor. I step the power up in 1 to 2 watt increments (up to 26). More visible vapor is produced at each increase in wattage. Some levels produce more than others depending upon the strain. The taste stays very good due to the excellent air flow.
The tube with the blue clip would be perfect for use with the Cloud or Versa.
The tube with the white clip in the second photo will work on a glass piece with an 18mm male fitting.
The tube with the orange clip in the second photo will allow an LSV to use a HT. The MtF adapter can also be used for direct draw with any 7th floor 18mm glass style vaporizer.
I just love how these tubes mix and match.

I installed the glass heater cover (minus the screen) back into my LSV to try out the 18mm glass roasting tube. It still has the ss heater cover installed as well. 10 watts is a very good starting point with the LSV. The flavor is as good as I expected it would be. I didn't get a transfer wand with my LSV, but this works very well for direct draw. I tried it with a silicone whip inserted into the end of the glass mouthpiece tube. It also worked really well. I got to see what is happening in the roasting tube when you draw air through it. The herb lays on the bottom screen until you start drawing air. Some of the herb jumps up and sticks to the top screen while the rest sort of bounces around in a fluidized bed. The draw strength will affect how much it fluidizes. It is fun to watch. A more complete extraction can be accomplished at a lower power level for better flavor. Amazing how much difference a roasting tube can make. Liking this one more every day.

Thanks Alan. You've helped de-mystify "DIY" wands for me. I'm shopping for pieces to make an all GonG pathway / roasting tube WPA for my DBV and D020 bubbler (18mm female).

I think all I need is an 18mm MtF and a 90 degree 18mm MtM, and some screens. So the vaporizer isn't right in my face, maybe I can find a longer elbow (trying to keep it down to 2 pieces) that isn't an arm and a leg - the best I've done is this MtM one second from the bottom, but it's $25 shipped (glassblowersdirect.com). I've posted this pic a couple times this week because I like the curvy elbows - good for airflow, reduces height, and the extra length is welcome. Just wish it was cheaper.

Just wish it was cheaper.

I have 2 ideas for this, but I'm not sure if it will save any cash. My point to this is that the DBV wand/bowl is one of a kind made to hold the screan perfectly, maximize capacity, and maybe even improve function. Yes, any 19mm male GonG could be made into a DBV bowl and possibly work for you, but they will not be the same.

First, you could have 7th Floor custom make you exactly what you want in one piece, using the oem DBV wand/bowl. 7th Floor is great to deal with, just give them a call.

My second idea and what I'd do if it were me... Buy a DBV wand and take it to a local blower to customize. Even if it's only to put a GonG on the other end with nothing fancy, then add a 90 degree adapter.

That's a great solution. I could really use the reclaim version like this.

I just devised a fluidization roasting tube that will work with the e-nano the other day. I have had great success using it with my HI. I'm sure it would work well with the PD and newer UD as well. It is made from wine corks, 13mm glass tubing, and 1/2" ss screens. Should even be able to use a glass tube with a 14mm end connection. The air flow is quite good and the screens don't get very dirty. Just got some wine corks ordered so it may take me a week before I can get some assembled. May be best to send me an email to alan@toasty-top.com to discuss more.

Air is continually forced into the roasting chamber, which creates enough of a vortex/turbulence to keep the materials suspended in the air while heat is being transferred, for 100% convection without any conduction from the material touching the inside of the roasting chamber.

"Hot-air roasters force heated air through a screen or perforated plate under the coffee beans with sufficient force to lift the beans. Heat is transferred to the beans as they tumble and circulate within this fluidized bed."

The 18mm glass roasting tube isn't intended to work with the HI. It requires a unit with an 18mm glass connection and at least 20 watts of available heat. My new glass and wine cork tubes however, are designed to work with the HI or any other vaporizer with a 3/8" heater cover. They also provide some fluidization and you don't need to worry about spilling anything with them.

With the extreme q's cyclone bowl loaded, and not elbow packed, does this do about the same thing?

The glass and wine cork tube will work perfectly with the nano since they both have the same size heater cover. The inside diameter of the aluminum outer sleeve looks to be 1" or larger so the cork will fit down inside. Trying to get some more glass tubes finished up today so I can offer some for sale.
