I just found out that where I live there's atleast 3 different 3d printing places. Can't wait to leech off of ur guys' work :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there plans to deploy printers to office depot and kinko's. (And maybe home depot??) There could possibly be quite a few more places in the near future where you can walk in with a file and walk out with an object.

This is a quick simple design I built using Google Sketchup (not the most powerful CAD software around)

Printing this now, hopefully it will work nicely

Cool. One of my biggest gripes is the "not having three hands to load" problem. :)

I don't have one. Can you at least "napkin sketch" a general idea of what your are talking about? Also, if you can include dimensions that would help, but no worry if you can't as I'm sure others can. That'd be a start.

Edit: I imagine that the mechanism for affixing it to the Cera might need to be rethought?

For scale, the Cera has a 1 inch diameter.

The dark horizontal line that runs across the Cera in both sketches is where the switch meets the body. Maybe the hinge could be replaced with a simple horizontal ring that would be sandwiched between the switch and the body?

Really lost by those sketches (might help if I had a Cera or even knew what it looked like ha ha ha). If you can design the switch on google Sketchup or another CAD software (Tinkercad is also popular)

There were plans to deploy printers to Office Depot (or some other big chain) in Europe - but this was a full-color paper printer (prints injet paper, glued together, and a laser cutter to cut the paper to size - good for architects, and designers, but not good for 'functional' models). But as far as I've heard, there really isn't any national chain which offers 3D printing just yet - the technology is still very new and would be cost-prohibitive to print currently.

HP is investing in 3D printing - though they are looking at industrial grade machines for use in 'print shops' - they don't anticipate the market to be very large for home 3D printers in the next few years.

Already on my 4th attempt to 3D print that stand - the first 3 attempts this morning failed at various stages - all because a static discharge is breaking the connection between the computer and the printer. Luckily, I can print directly from an SD card on my Replicator - so I was able to eliminate the computer from the equation. Hopefully it'll be done in an hour and I can test-fit it. I'm really looking forward to a proper stand to hold my Ascent while loading

Update - Unfortunately my designs were a bit too tight and while I can use it, I need to modify the design a bit. I've already modified my design slightly from this prototype, can't wait to start printing the new stand.

Another recent development - I have already reached out to @vtac regarding listing my products for sale on this site. I plan to open a Shapeways store which will handle manufacturing and shipping my models to you guys. This means I can offer more exotic materials than if I printed it personally on my RepRaps.

For now, I'm waiting to hear back from Vtac - but my mind is racing - thinking about all the design possibilities. Air-tight TPE case for your portables anyone? mwahahaha

Hi All!

I'm back after a brief hiatus! (Word of caution - don't ever discuss possibly selling 3D printed parts without first getting Vtac's approval!!) - Thankfully Vtac has approved selling accessories - I hope to have an official thread posted shortly (I'm at work, but I'll try to get that thread posted)

Fyi - my shapeways.com store will sell my models in a variety of materials including polished plastics, Brass, Stainless Steel, Gold Plated Steel, Silver, and for some models, glazed ceramic.

In the meantime - check out my latest 3D model for a Davinci Ascent stand.

Until I print a prototype, these stands will not be for sale (I don't want to publish any items for sale until I confirm they are a good fit).

I presume all of the holes are a means to minimize materiel used whilst maintaining structural integrity? How much more would the cost of one being that had solid exterior? What material did you say you were using?

It's called "Voronoi Tessellation" - it's a math formula used to determine those shapes. Yes it's done to reduce material, but really it's about the 'coolness' factor. Showing someone a block of plastic and saying "this was 3d printed" - and everyone goes "oh, cool" - but show them the Veronoi tessellated version and they go "Holy sh*t that's cool!" because really, there isn't any way to make these voronoi objects using traditional manufacturing techniques.

I don't know exactly what the price difference will be between the two models when Shapeways calculates the base price for the models, but we'll find out soon enough! I will say that I've spent countless hours playing with the voronoi tessellation to get the best 'effects' - and the final model may not look like the model shown above.

I personally prefer printing with ABS plastic on my own 3D printers. ABS is the same plastic used in LEGO's and Automotive panels.

Finished printing a prototype of the DV Ascent Stand I *was* going to upload to my store so I could open it tonight. Unfortunately I am NOT happy with the design anymore. Back to the drawing board.....

I personally held off on 3D printing, until the opportunity fell into my lap - my boss decided he wanted to buy "us" a 3d printer to solve a tiny need (blank plates for a computer server, in the 2 years since, we have never needed this part). In reality, he thinks this 3D printer will make "us" rich - by us, I mean he thinks I'll invent something which he can sell for a profit. What did I REALLY do with his fancy 3D printer when I first got it (since I was tasked with learning how to use it)? I printed parts to build my OWN 3D printer for my house, haha :lol:

Currently tearing down my first 3D printer to rebuild as a better and larger 3D printer (With a higher accuracy - 250 micron's more accurate than the 2011 model I built previously!):science:

Here's a Voronoi tessellated stand I actually successfully printed for my Ascent (before the Ascent failed to heat up last night!) - It's currently for sale in my new Etsy Prototype store:

I keep one Ascent specifically for other herbs as I find it affects the flavor when I want to go back to our fav herb), and A) I really need to stop holding the Ascent in "gangsta-rap upside-down mode" (In all fairness, with flower, it doesn't matter that my elbow is on the back of the couch, which would be more natural to have my wrist *ABOVE* mouth level, which, indeed, would mean an inverted Ascent!); and B) I also need a stand for this when there is still oil in the can (or remove the oil can, but I'm lazy, so a stand would be better.)

Hahaha, indeed - that's where his mind usually is - step 1 and 3 are perfectly clear, step 2 is "Easy" - it always is according to him, until you tell him to do it.

Kinda confused, what stand for oil in the can? Do you need something to hold the oilcans? (must be too early in the AM, I still haven't medicated yet!)
