Chemicals and Flavour

Recently been vaping an indica and it tastes very acrid. Why would this be, and has any body else noticed a big taste difference from sativas and indicas? cheers

problemchild,

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
I think its safe to say there are many vast differences in strain flavors within both families (let alone between different peoples individual perceptions). Same with smell IMO.

Know your source and growing methodologies is the only way to 'really' know what might be in there if anything ;)

smokum,
This one is harsh on the throat, and i've got a haze that like fine wine. Hey, do males and females taste different? cheers

Sorry, don't have the luxury of a dispensary/coffee shop. still banned in the uk so getting to know your source isn't happening.

Welcome to FC problemchild

The compounds that are responsible for the awesome fragrance and tastes of our favourite plant are the terpenes and terpenoids (oxidized terpenes). Many plants produce terpenes, but mj has a distinct mix and ratio from other plants. This terpene "profile" can vary greatly between strains, and can even vary somewhat between the same strain, with different growers.

There are hundreds of terpenes in mj, the major ones being myrcene and limonene. They not only work together to give the tastes and odours, but play a major role by working in synergy with the cannabinoids to give the overall high that we get, as well as the medicinal benefits, imo.

Terpene compounds have been used in the perfume and fragrance industry for years.

Sadly it's really hard to actually get a pure indica or sativa in the UK.

Also I think some of the terpenes etc may vape at over 450? It's weird as some super stinky cheese only mildly tasted cheesy but amnesia lasts very zesty.

Do you like the Damned by chance?

Is the harsh one very green? If it hasn't been properly flushed in the final stages and it retains a lot of nitrogen in the plant, this will make it a lot harsher (in my experience). A proper flushing will generally result in the green softening up (or almost going away lending to purplish hues and others on some strains). I've always found proper flushing/nitrogen content to be a pretty important factor in relation to harshness ... also varies a lot strain by strain depending on the particular characteristics ... but if you want a strain to be as smooth as possible, a good final flush is of utmost importance.

Sometimes a slow dry cure can improve poorly cured harsh weed but not always Imo.

But on the other hand I have some 9 month old poor weed it is poor to smoke pure as it burns uneven and goes out. I'll try and vape it.

I was discussing poor weed with a friend and he says a % of it is probably because they have robbed someone's grow too early or just cut them and cured them badly just a theory mind

If it's really unbearable and you're okay with removing most/all of the flavor, you could try a water cure.

Water cure that's a new one on me?

My method is hermetically sealed jar leave in in there and even now and then leave the lid off for a while. This mainly seems to work with dampish stuff.

I'll try the rubbish stuff through the solo when I can be bothered it's hard to use crud when I have some lovely hi grade

Yeah! Props for the Solo!!! Sorry, I digress!

I recently picked up a Q of a strain that I've had many times before, but same as you reported, harsh as anything I've ever had! Came down to not being cured very well.

I had the option of waiting before vaping the Q, so I took the advice of another member and burped the storage container twice a day for a week.... Was shocked that a lot of the harshness was gone by week's end!
