Police Chief Cites Hoax Story in Testimony Against Legalizing Marijuana

“The first day of legalization, that’s when Colorado experienced 37 deaths that day from overdose on marijuana,” Pristoop testified at Tuesday’s Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee hearing. “I remember the first day it was decriminalized there were 37 deaths.”

But Sen. Jamie Raskin, D-Montgomery, who has proposed a bill that would legalize, regulate and tax the drug, immediately fact-checked Pristoop.

“Unless you have some other source for this, I’m afraid I’ve got to spoil the party here,” Raskin said. “Your assertion that 37 people died of a marijuana overdose in Colorado was a hoax on the DailyCurrant and the Comedy Central website.”

I don't like how they're just brushing it off.If police make false statements then they should be held liable or something.

If I went around lying to the public while in a high up position I wouldn't get away with that crap

Yeah it's bullshit, but at least they called him out on it rather than just taking his word at face value.

Chief Pristoop also has a law degree so he should be smart enough to get his facts straight before spewing bullshit like that at a Senate committee hearing.
He's getting flamed pretty good for it...what a laugh .

According to the news police chief Michael A. Pristoop did lie and that's no trivial event as it occured during the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee at the Maryland State House (well, if i read this correctly):



Most obviously he did not. So much for professionalism & integrity...

Not sure if a Senate hearing is the same as court proceedings, but wouldn't that be perjury?

Considering that a US general has been caught lying to congress with no repercussions, I don't think the police would be held to any high a standard. I guess it just comes down to what your definition of "is", is.

It only makes sense if one considers the idea that police perjury causes real damage to this major public institution by eroding the citizen's confidence in it.

Well, his initial statement about some "really hard" attempt to validate the facts tells me if it's good enough for a leading member of police then i guess it's OKay for average guys to ask Google what it has to say about it...
