I'm sure we all know this one already. But given what is happening in Uganda, the new law pending in the state of AZ, the state of affairs in Russia, etc, it must be remembered now. First, non-poetic version is attributed to Martin Niemoller, but it is the poeticized version below most people know and that is on display at the US Holocaust Museum.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

From a collection of anonymous poems written by Irish monks from the 8th through the 13 centuries. 10 of the poems were translated by various authors for American composer Samuel Barber's great work, "Hermit Songs." This quote comes from last line of the last song, "The Desire for Hermitage." The poem was translated by Sean O Faolain.

I heard a lot about this book and really wanna read it. Did u get to read it, if so is it as good as I have heard?
