ALUMINUM is a completely safe material at vaporization temperatures, despite alarmists that believe and spread ignorant hearsay claiming the opposite. Remember that while the Herbalaire maxes out at 400F, Vaporizers that run much hotter, such as the VOLCANO (450+), safely utilize aluminum in the hottest part of the unit; the heater itself.

From the VOLCANO website:

"Does the aluminium heat exchanger block emit any substances which may be noticed?"
"No. The heat exchanger can reach a maximum temperature of 464°F (240°C). This temperature is well below the temperature threshold required to emit any substances from the material. To ensure user’s safety, we use heat resistant materials such as aluminium alloy AlMgSi (melting point 1220°F (660°C); boiling point 4566°F (2519°C). The University of Leiden in Netherlands made an independent study of the maximum air temperature produced by the VOLCANO, indicating it was below the minimum for substance release."

EDIT: CONGRATULATIONS TO HERBALAIRE ON REACHING 60 PAGES ON THE FUCKCOMBUSTION FORUM!
IT ONLY TOOK 10 YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL PUBLIC RELEASE!
FEEL FREE TO SHARE SOME OF THAT FC HYPE WITH THE ORIGINAL HERBIE; THE TRULY REVOLUTIONARY HERBALAIRE! :p

As you saw, my answer to this query was brief. However, if the crucible and heating chamber ARE aluminium, I have no qualms exactly for the reasons MG23 gave - it doesn't get hot enough, because we are vaping the goodies not combusting them.

Still, this has sparked my curiosity, so I have asked Herbalaire to clarify this and will get back with their answer when I get it.

After vaporizing with both shredded and non shredded bud, I believe the best way to get the most out of your bud, is to vapor it whole without shredded it, and then after you get almost no vapor to then take the bud out and shred it then put it back in and vapor it again. I find this still produces a lot of vapor after shred it. But I find that if I do not do it this way, and if I shred it first and then vapor it that after the vapor is gone that no matter how much I reshred it that it is no good. I used a scope. And the scope shows thc on what is shredded and vaped even after it is vaporized, but if I shred it AFTER first vaporing without shredding the first time but only the second time with the scope it seems like less THC is still on it. Hope this helps everyone. I know efficiency matters.

I received my new TonG mouthpiece yesterday and have had a couple of evenings to test it out "properly" in the name of science...

To trim down one of my crucibles, I used an old snug fitting, plastic piece on the inside as a dowl, to keep the shape of the cruc intact. Then I taped the outside, marked a line of ~ 1/4", and cut it with a dremel. Used a fine file to smooth out any barbs on the cut line, and was good to go.

I'm really enjoying this TonG. I've always just used the stocker mouthpieces, which were temp conditioned to make a snug fit into the HA. This new TonG fits much better and stabilzes the whole inverted HA into my 18mm bub setup to a point where I can do it rather easily, one handed, if I wish.

Shout out to The Shrike for this very handy and practical "upgrade"!

I also wanted to add that as an air scientist, I have no qualms about using aluminum in the HA, or any other vape. We just don't get near hot enough to affect the aluminum in any way, ime/o.

Whoa... Another convert. Might be starting a trend here!

Glad you found my little "upgrade" beneficial nicelytoasted. It's certainly not too difficult to do either - shame Herbalaire are giving a misleading description of "cannot be used with the crucible". Must be quite a few people missing out on the advantage of using the crucible in this setup as a result.

As regards my email to Herbalaire regarding the metal used, I have had no reply, so fired of another one today. Hopefully, they will get back to me soon.

Hey The Shrike:

I'm almost positive that the HA core and the crucible are made of aluminum, or an aluminum alloy of some sort.

I am now an official TonG convert

So i finally succeeded to convert a friend from smoking to vaporizing. He ordered the herbailaire 2.2 and so we tried this unit out. Really like the temp control on this unit. We started at 175°C and went way up to 200°C. Before we knew the herbailaire knocked us all 3 out we were hanging in the couch totally VAKED.

Tong to the rescue !

I've been using a pair of Solos as my daily drivers for quite some time. I ordered an herbalaire, in part seeking a more consistent/precise experience. I've been wanting to try bags, as well.

While i've had the HA for a while now, I managed to crack my solo gong before i even had a chance to "borrow" it for use with the Herbalaire. Finally, this week i got my (unbreakable :D) tong adapter and a lowpro adapter (for clearance, see pic) and have had a couple nights to "evaluate" hehe.

I haven't had the opportunity to compare it to my Solo usage, as that was all direct draw + gong... (HA was much hotter than solo, 1st/only time i tried it.) In a few weeks or so, when i've had the chance i'll toss some thoughts about that in here.

Till then, all i can say is i love it, and......

here's mah setup:
vdpkfcxl.jpg

and here's my take on the tong-crucible-conversion & a little tidbit i enjoy using for concentrates.

Left is a filthy ceramic screen from VB's ez-change whip kit. I luv loading it up with goo and tossing it in there. It matches the inner diameter of the crucible nicely. To shorten the crucible for tong-usage, more or less all i did is plop that section of dowel in, put a small cutoff wheel on my dremel and shoved it in, turned it on, and let it do it's thing. The dowel kept it level and at a consistent depth. Smoothed out the edges, too, of course.

Howdy Folks. New here, and new to vaping. Have a friend with a Volcano and liked it, but being unwilling to fork over $500 I have been researching what to get. Reading this forum and others led me to order an HA 2.2 direct. Hasn't arrived yet, but I am kinda stoked about finally pulling the trigger.

I am an old fart to most of you and have been imbibing for over 4 decades, but Vapes are pretty new to me. Since quitting cigs a few years ago I have been bothered by the idea of continuing to breathe in smoke. Also with the cost of herb these days I wanted to reduce my daily cost, which I am hoping this new toy will do for me. While I expect to ask some noob questions now and again, this seems like a good place to get the skinny, so I will probably hang around some. :)

So, I thank you for the knowledge you all have already given me to help me buy in, and I will see you around.

While that is true, there are more of us old farts here than just about any other MJ site on the internet.

Welcome.................from an older fart (turning 70 next month). :myday:

Damn, you ARE old. ;)

So, what toys do I need to get for this Vape? I imagine since I am going from combusting I probably won't need to cool the smoke. I was thinking a couple extra crucibles might be a good idea. And maybe a silicone whip. Probably should have ordered them with the device.

You should really get a bubbler or a hydrotube and a GonG or TonG adapter imo. I love how smooth the hits are and how hard it hits.

I am going to wait and use the vape for a while to see what other methods of drawing I may find interesting. I suspect that the change from combustion to vaping will be dramatic enough that adding a bubbler would pale in comparison. That may be something I want to try later, but for now this should suffice.

I was thinking more in terms of accessories like a food grade whip or extra crucibles. Having never owned anything "mechanical" (other than passive water pipes) to augment my smoking I don't have any idea how durable or "degradable" it's constituent parts might me. I tend to be a "measure twice, cut once" kind of guy. :)

I like a magic flight silicone whip on the HA it's 1/4 inch ID food grade silicone. It can be nice to have an extra crucible but one should last years.

The best accessories off the bat IMHO would be some High Grade Top Shelf Bud, and a silicone whip.
But the whip that comes with it works fine so ...

Fine Herb & Beverage of choice is a must.

You already have the right idea if you're looking to upgrade the "stock" experience.

I would definitely recommend 14mm flexible silicone tubing as your first upgrade. You can cut a long whip for desktop use, and a short stub of a whip to use as a mouthpiece extension to "lift and sip" from the entire unit. 14mm tubing has a much wider bore than the stock whip; it goes overtop the main mouthpiece instead of inside it, allowing for a much more open airflow. Silicone is also preferable to the stock plastic tubing in that it can be easily reclaimed from when it becomes honey-coated.

Secondary accessories I would recommend include the 5 pack of extra crucibles, and the Teflon on Glass adapter that Herbalaire offers on their website. Even if you aren't interested in using the TonG adapter for water filtering your vapor yet, it still acts as a complete upgrade over the stock mouthpiece (provided you can cut a quarter inch or so off of a crucible).
It can be used for whips, bags, and direct draw just like stock MP, but it has a more secure connection to the unit itself to avoid any accidental "popouts" of the MP. Herbalaire offers both of these accessories on their website, but their shipping is a little steep so I would recommend getting them both at once.

Thank a lot for your suggestions. I just noticed on their website that in reference to the included whip they say "Food grade materials". Does that mean that the whip they include is already a silicone whip?

I don't think so; as far as I know the stock whip is food grade PVC plastic.

Salutations MG23,

...as far as I know the stock whip is food grade PVC plastic.

This corresponded to mine when i used an HA v2.1:

« PVC tubing (marked Kuri Tec Klearon K010 by Kuriyama 3/16" I. D. x 5/16" O. D. 70 F Non-Toxic PVC NSF-51 Canada K090302 00:36 )... »

E.G. Food Grade PVC as well.
