Sorry to ask a (rather annoying) question

I found a head shop that sells The Firefly for $270, and was wondering if there have been any big revision changes since the launch. Since it's so close to me, I could just go and pick it up and not deal with shipping times. If there have been major revisions, then I would like to just buy directly from the manufacturer

Nothing revised. The current units are the same as the ones originally shipped. No worries.

@mitchgo61 It may feel right, but it is unnecessary to use the FF in a horizontal orientation. On the go, mine is normally pointed down, with my left hand cupping it from up top with my ring finger activating the button, if that make sense.

You are correct, it's not necessary for proper functionality to hold it level. But for me, holding it at an angle, at any point other than when the bowl is first packed, causes material to float around the chamber and makes it messier, and raises the risk of getting material into the vapor path and possibly my mouth.

I guess my point was, the usage tolerance of the FF is less forgiving than, say, the Solo, which is why I wouldn't grab the FF as my first "social" vape choice. Again, I'm not that social, so it doesn't come up a ton. :p

Great Scott!
Try some high end bubble in there and it will slow that move even more. Just put a second screen to protect from drippage.

So it is okay to use a screen on top of the bowl? Or do you mean a screen directly on top of the other screen?

I need to find the ideal screen mod for fine grind and dry sift hash or kief and I'd find it even better.

So long as you're definitely getting it with a warranty I don't see why not! I'd feel safer buying it direct, but if it's a place you trust...

Sorry, I got busy for a bit. I use an extra screen on top of the original to absorb any leakage into the heater. Full melt may need more, and/or a bed of herb to put it on.
If I'm vaping only bubble, I put a screen on top to keep closer to the heater.
Most the time I'll put a small bed of partial melt below a flower chamber to prolong and enhance the load.
A little oil on top of the herb also produces a longer, more intense session, but one has to be careful not to put more oil than your herb can soak up. I find a small bb is
sufficient enough without worries of drippings in the heater.
EQ screens may be helpful in both applications, but I need to play with them more to confirm.
Best of luck.

Even though one of the reasons I got the firefly was because I didn't want to have to mess with any small parts, curiosity got the better of me and I finally tried the top screen method.
The screen I used was medium-sized mesh, and just big enough to fit inside the window.
It was the first time anything has gone in my bowl besides herb.

Pro: it keeps the window and more importantly, the little vapor vents around it, clear of debris.
Con: as feared, it's another thing to deal with but not a problem if it gets lost.
Verdict: worth it, but no big deal if you don't have one; you just have to clean the lid more.

So it is okay to use a screen on top of the bowl?

People have had variable results, most notably several folks have had the top screen increase the chamber temp (apparently) enough to cause combustion. This happened with me on my first unit, but that had a faulty heat sensor. I've used it on my current FF without it increasing the heat noticeably, and it does keep the lid neater. But I find it impacts the taste negatively, and the taste is one of the things I love about the FF, so it's not worth the trade-off, for me.

Also, I finally got those glass honeycomb screens and they are just too small to be effective top screens. Though they are spec-ed at being 3/8 of an inch, they are more like two. You can put two on top of a full FF bowl, but it leaves a lot of exposed material and doesn't do too much to keep the lid neater. (Plus, cleaning those teeny screens is a whole new pain in the ass...)

So the search for a properly-sized glass screen continues. If anyone knows where you can buy similar glass screens that are closer to 1/2 inch wide, I'm all ears. (If they even exist, I have yet to find them....)

Please report back about the new unit.

I am enjoying my Firefly, but I still am surprised at how little visible vapor it produces. I have kept it because it makes me feel good and definitely gets the herb a nice dark brown. But after reading all the reports of the Firefly producing huge amounts of vapor, I still have a nagging feeling that mine isn't working as well as it should...

Well after explaining about the lack of visible vapor and the difficulty browning the ABV I got my RMA and sent the FF back across the country via 5 day UPS ground snail and waited knowing this would take a while. After receiving it 5 days later Shelby wrote and said that "Today, your unit was inspected and the Returns Department felt it necessary to send you a replacement unit." Yes! Next day Shelby wrote again with my tracking info and said "I just wanted to let you know that I was mistaken yesterday when I sent you that email; our Returns department actually repaired your unit, and did not issue you a replacement."

OK that also works for me, I felt vindicated that I wasn't crazy and probably wasn't using the device incorrectly. They had confirmed there was an issue. I was kinda bummed that there would be another 5 day wait while my repaired FF crept back across the country but when the Fedex tracking became live I saw the shipping originated in Hackensack NJ ( I am on Cape Cod). This was strange considering my unit was in Seattle. What appears to be a brand new FF arrived the next day and I am glad to report there is such thing as visible vapor with the FF. Using exactly the same technique and material that the other unit failed on I was rewarded with clouds... glorious clouds ha ha ha ha cough... whew, sorry. Anyway, the flavor is still fantastic not to mention the effects so two thumbs up to FF for excellent support and top quality hardware.

Outstanding...congratulations!

I am in the same boat and await my hotter replacement so that I may join you all in appreciating this vaporizer.

Stacey asked me what color I wanted and I said it didn't matter. That will be a surprise too.

Again, appreciate the great tips from folks like @steama and @mckeen on this thread.

Happy Sunday.

A great company to work with and an even greater vaporization experience. A few cool units did indeed get out and now we know. Thanks for the update. If not for FC how would we know?

How about trying some glass flowers/daisies on top of the load to help as a filter? Tacking down a few glass flowers similar to what is recommended in the Acent for small loads. The glass flowers would also give more thermal mass for heat retention & boost the FF's efficiency.

You can also find 12mm & 13mm glass beads/discs etc (1/2" = 12.7mm) on eBay.

Still haven't found any that are that large...all of the flowers I'm finding on ebay and elsewhere are 1/4 inch-ish. So if you have a link to any half-inch variants of the flowers, you will earn my undying devotion. Or at least a thank-you!

This vape continues to blow me away. Got to 6 bowls yesterday on 1 charge and it still wasn't dead, I had to tap out!

I can't express how much I love using this thing.

Nice! The FF truly transcends the "great portable" category. It's just a great vape, period.

ok, maybe I'm spoiled, coming from electronics and computers, but where I come from GREAT customer service means drop shipping: I ship defective equipment back after I have the replacement in hand. Some companies put a temp charge on your bank card, some don't. Just sayin'

that's kinda a good point yo. i got a "rma" sorry don't know if i'm saying that right. but my rubber seal came out on the lid. i was sent a fed ex slip i guess for shipping but i don't want to give up using my ff. aside from the functionality not being affected/effected? so whatever i'll just deal with a jiggly lid.

Hey, these little buggers fit EXACTLY, use as top or basket. A blessing for us small bowl fans.

BTW, @fbrinsley, that little top gasket seats back in very easily. The glue is alcohol soluble and probably can just let go with time. The 2 gaskets are the Achilles heel, but they are easy to service. In fact, looking at the internals, the whole apparatus is remarkable in that it's simple, spacious and easy to work on. Nice.

Mine definitely works. Been getting comfortable with it using a vapor brothers herbal blend. After a few tries I got some nice vapor. I took the heat up a notch and got even better vapor and then I tried a bit more heat after stirring the blend up and it combusted way too much. So, I definitely don't have a bad unit.

What worked best for me was to let it heat up for 7 seconds, let go of the button for 1 second, hold in the button while sipping at it for four seconds and then letting go of the button while sipping at it.

I'll bet this thing is going to pack a punch...wow.

Just ordered a spare battery just because.

I don't think I need the external charger to be honest, I have no problems getting 5+ bowls. I'm yet to have my battery die on me and I've had 6 bowls on a charge.

Wow. How many hits is that? I've never gotten more than 2 bowls, or maybe 25-30 hits, on one charge.

External charger is a nice accessory, and since they lowered the price to 30, a decent value.

I haven't counted hits, but me and a friend who doesn't own a vape got 6 bowls and more battery left. The bowls are small so they vape fairly quickly. Probably about 6-8 hits per bowl if we are stretching it, maybe 5-7 actually? The ABV always comes out nice and even etc. He has hated every vape since trying the pax because the pax was so easy it was his favorite. When I asked him if he loves this more than the pax like I do, he said "well yeah whats hard about pressing a button and inhaling", so that gives you an idea of how little technique/learning curve there is.

The best part is those 6 bowls in this, probably make up less than 2 pax loads, and are certainly not less effective than a pax load. I wanna say based on my non-scientific findings that this thing is ~3-4x more efficient than the pax in MY personal use. I feel 1 bowl of this firefly = 1 pax bowl as far as effects go, but the pax has no flavor to me, and uses 3-4x more bud per bowl.

I really don't know that I needed the 2nd battery since I just top it up whenever needed (never so far) but it only takes 20 min or so to charge to full if you've had a couple bowls. Loving every single thing about this vape so far.

Hi I ordered the firefly directly off their website and is being shipped through Fed-Ex. Do you know what the box will say on it? Like will it say HERBAL VAPORIZER or something like that haha? I live with some roommates.
