Hi guys, I'm due to get my Solo tomorrow, being that the unit now has the capability to "use while charging", can/should I plug it in for the first time and just start vaping, or would it be wise to just let it charge fully before using it for the first time? Glad to be part of the Solo Family-Sundaddy

I've read it's very important for the first charge to be a full one...

Congrads on your Solo & welcome to the Family!

Roger that! Don't want to mess it up. Thanks
:) No worries.

From what I've read, it sets the ceiling limit of the charge, so you want the first charge to be as complete as possible.

After this, there is some debate on whether or not fully charging regularly lessens overall battery longevity.

Enjoy!

Yeah, I wondered that too...you hear so many things like "let the battery run all the way down", or "charge after every use"...but I'm not very knowledgable on the preferences of different batteries.

Ah yes, not sure of the overall impact to doing this, but I top my battery off between sessions. My unit is not that aged at present, so only time will tell....

I actually wasnt able to wait for mine to completely completely charge, so i started using it while charging and havent noticed any glaring issues... but who knows. Nice thing about the solos is the battery is user replaceable, so theres that if it does degrade eventually (they even offer higher capacity batteries).

By the way, anyone have an answer to my last post about anyone whose used Ed's wooden 2 inch wong as a straight stem, without a waterpipe, at all temps? Worried it vapor might be too hot, but think it would be a good stealth option if not. Thanks guys, such a great community!

Get Ed's wood stem - you'll love it! Because it's short in length it may get slightly warm, but not at all uncomfortable. No more breakage worries, looks sensational, stealth, and doubles as a water tool coupler. Consider 3 inches (to me 2 inches looks a bit stubby). ENJOY!

I found out today I won't be getting my Eds Granadillo stem from Puffitup, they are all out. It will be another couple weeks, before it comes, it will be sent separate from my Solo. Ed must be selling a lot of stems, so that's good he's successful, I'm happy for him.

For some reason the order went through. They must have just ran out. I got an email from Randy at Puffitup today.

Just got my SSOOLLOO!!!!!
Was going to do a review, but after staring @ the screen for 5 minutes and not typing a damn thing...I realize I am to damned stoned and Solo works. Will update when the pink elephants go away

:mmmm:

OK, 3 hours later I'm good! First impressions on a new black M1E1...everyone says it but man is this thing small! Hefty metal feel to it though, quality. The way it lights up really does remind me like something from Star Wars, a lightsaber handle or grenade or something. Got it charged up, trying to be as stealthy as possible as lots of family lives in my small tincan, did the break-in, on level 3, insert tube and...not much, saw/tasted some vapor and done.

I was a little disappointed at this point as I felt incredible drag and very little lung filling. I have iron lungs but am a lightweight when it comes to herb, so I was surprised by only getting half full lungs with the same amount of herb that would fill my lungs and launch me to warp 10 via combustion :(
I only loaded the stem halfway full and lightly tamped down (combusting this amount=WaRp10), and the metal bowl did smell a tiny bit after. I am pretty sure it will get buildup in there if I don't pack a proper bowl. As I said though, felt disappointed. I knew I needed practice and all, but I would actually use a 1/3rd more weed vaping compared to combusting :(

So naturally I start loading a second bowl and...notice the ABV from hit #1 is a perfect coffee color through and through, very uniform vape. The 2nd bowl is 2/3rds full, lightly tamped, about to hit it but...all of a sudden I realize DAMN! I'M HIGH!! Been years since I vaped and completely forgot how it sneaks up on me and leaves me more functionable/less paranoid but at the same time my mind is thinking nuttiness at 100MPH and...that 2nd bowl is already loaded, what a waste to disassemble everything, might as well hit it...

I upped the temp to level 4 and let the stem sit for an extra 30 seconds and proceeded to vape. As soon as I hit it I knew I messed up. Trying to be stealthy and quick the whole time was working fine, but after #2 I just started grinning, then started breaking everything back down. Of course all my shit is on the computer desk out in the open, and a family member walks in...I get paranoid as hell when I combust, but I was flying at warp 10 on vape and just didn't give a damn about anything, still grinnin' though! That family member walked out, and ANOTHER one walks in! My stem is to hot to pack, and I want the unit to cool down before capping, so ohhh well...No one said a word and all is gravy, no paranoia at all and I will just live my life and be where I be and at where I at. Anyways bowl #2 (heat level 4) lasted me a couple of inhales though and I got curious to see how much I could extract. Turns out the ABV was dark dark brown and smoking a little, I hit it to much, but the color was pure uniform and no combustion! This really surprised me that a tiny unit could work so flawless!

^^ Afterwords:
First the negative: I completely went from stealth to a wailing banshee! Not Solo's fault, just a little over-medicating and forgetting that vaping in general is different compared to combustion. The unit and stem stay hot for a while, so I can't really do this stealthily all in one go, it will require setup, operation, then cleanup. Operation is stealthy and easy, but I think the PnP has this thing well beat for stealth overall. Also I must say I was worried that I might get a dud as several people have had issues...mine worked fine though and after reading about how well the company honors the warranty I knew I made a good decision! I am sure there are other little things that bother me, but really I don't have anything negative to say.

Now the positive: Yes I think the PnP would be better for stealth, but after trying the Solo I wouldn't give it up for the world! That was the most flavorful smooth herb I ever tasted in my life! Can't beat the all glass pathway. The learning curve was ridiculously small, by the 2nd bowl I found the perfect slow draw. This is the easiest/most convenient way to medicate for me, a pipe might be quicker but with the Solo I can relax and fire at will (metaphorically) without having to worry about smoke or smell. My unit and stem do smell a little, but nothing compared to loading it when my herb container is open...basically there is no worries about detectable smells from the Solo itself, or even the exhaled vapors, the raw herb smells 20x more. I did buy a Smoke Buddy to exhale into, but no need to even use it!

The taste: well the only other vape I have owned was a Dabuddah and tried a few cheap ones...I did like my Dabudah but always felt like the ceramic core was too hot and I could taste something slightly off, real hard to get an even ABV as well. It shocks me to say that this portable blows all past vape experiences out of the water! I never tasted herb this way before, so much clean clean flavor! So far my battery experience seems average and no complaints, I feel it is a good amount of power for being on the go, but I am immediately convinced that I will by a PA adapter just for ease of use at home.
I was so close to buying a PnP, the quick loading and other options looked like they would suit me better but after seeing all the plastic stems melting...if the PnP had a glass stem I might've tried it, but I went with the Solo. Thanks so much to FC for good info and reviews! I am very happy with my purchase, maybe a Cloud VXC might be better, but I am completely satisfied with my new daily driver.

THE END OF COMBUSTING?
Not completely...I prefer vaping but it does take a little more herb for me to reach the same level and the high wears off a little faster, so more maintenance (about 1/3rd more herb). This is just how it affects me and I am a wacky person, YMMV. I will probably combust :whip::spliff: once a week with friends to get that crazy paranoia high, but for daily medicating vaping does me good, I can be blitzed but still function. Now did I mention that smoooooth all-glass taste yet?....

THE END

It's your call, of course, but IMO that's probably the worst thing you can do in terms of battery life.

We've been through this a number of times. The battery is good for so many cycles (recharges). If you only partially discharge it then recharge that damages the battery as much as if you more completely discharge it. Using it say two sessions then recharging it means it'll do only 25% of the sessions it could have done if you'd gone 8 sessions between charges.

Likewise, it's worth noting that stopping the charge 'a little early' doubles the cycle life. This for stopping .2 Volts lower (for two cells, .1 per). On average say 600 cycles not 300. Drop it again, charge every 6 sessions rather than 8 and you double it again (1200 cycles projected).

So that's say 600 sessions total at 2 per full recharge, 4200 (7 times 600) stopping .1 short or 7200 (6 times 1200). Your call, but there's no need to sacrifice your battery in a test, this stuff has been exhaustively investigated.

Check out the info around table 4:

I actually wasnt able to wait for mine to completely completely charge, so i started using it while charging and havent noticed any glaring issues... but who knows.

Actually lots of people do know, this is not a smart thing to do if you want maximum battery life. Advice from the maker (both here and other products that use these sorts of batteries) is 'fully charge the first time (over charge it to be sure). That's their advice, as well as what 'the smart money' backs. You're welcome of course to treat yours as you wish, but IMO this is definitely not good advice to pass on.

You won't notice anything 'up front' and you might not notice your battery dieing an early death for a number of reasons, but that's how it works.

My advice remains to follow the maker's advice and completely charge before using the first time (it's really not all that hard to wait a few more hours one time if you care about battery life IMO). Then, if you can, recharge it until the top (step 7) LED is lit but the charge LED is still flashing (should put you within .2 Volts of the maximum) and continue to use it as long as there are LEDs showing on start up. I check the battery state each power up, if no LEDs light (fully discharged) I'll do that next session (there's still a few left before getting locked out, which should be avoided) but will recharge afterwards.

Regards to all.

OF, I read that page before, but came up with exactly the opposite feelings on these between-session charges.... I may have misunderstood the "low DoD" information?

From the page:
Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life, other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery once in a while.

A partial discharge reduces stress and prolongs battery life.

Hey guys, got my order in from Planetvape yesterday. Very happy with them, fast shipping (3 days to Vancouver) and they included and extra o rings and caps.

I ordered the the solo turbo gong, and pves stem. Non solo releated, kiss ti cart, ssv med grinder, jyarz.

I need to using the gong and the stem a bit more to get a real feel, but I'm not sure if im feeling the turbo seems a bit airy. Is there a gong attachment without air slits or would the pves be alright compared to the turbo.

Do what you feel!

Personally if I had the TURBO I would fit it with a glass disc.
Or just use whole flower nuggets and not grind.

There is not a right or wrong way just a way!

@Loo Entis that was a very good review!
Been using my old m107 after a Solo hiatus for a few weeks now. Such a badass a vape. The Solo tastes better than the multiple $500+ vapes I own.
@Been Vapin
Agree!

I have 3 of them.
My oldest is a M107.

I think you did misread 'the big picture' too.

Yes, don't deeply discharge the battery (in our case run it until it locks out), serious damage happens then. Remember that page covers batteries without protection circuits as well. This is also why you should store them partially discharged in fact.

Check again what that table and the text says. Small reductions in final voltage give HUGE increases in total life span. Notice the 'military version'? There the military is paying extra for that feature and accepting less use per charge because they too understand the benefit in not having to replace the battery as soon.

We're not talking 'memory' like with NiCds of old here, but actual degradation of the chemicals at the plates with use. In practice the reaction at one plate gets limited before the other (depending on the amount and nature of the chemicals used), IIRC it's the positive plate that does this on charging but please don't hold me to that. This is why you need to completely charge the first time (sometimes called 'forming').

The highest number of sessions comes from never completely discharging or completely charging (after the initial time), but in getting the most sessions out of every (limited) recharge. Blindly recharging after each use only reduces the number of sessions, not the number of times the battery can be recharged before it's toast. Same number of recharges. If you use it less per recharge you use it less per recharge........

Good info. I will definitely let it go full charge before I mess with it.

Good plan. I think this is one of those ironic cases where you won't notice the battery hasn't failed?

I get that's there's an urge to 'load 'er up' right away....hey, I'm human, it sure happens to me......but I'd sure kick myself if I ever ended up changing out a battery I hadn't followed instructions on and fully charged the first time.

I have an advantage here in that I can rebuild the batter packs myself and have no problem cracking into this (or other) vapes. I've already had to replace the battery in my 'loaner' due to low capacity, then again it was treated as a rental car by several guys, one of which boasted of how cool it was to always have it fully charged 'if only you remember to put it back on charge immediately after use'...... We got that misunderstanding sorted out, he won't be 'killing his off with kindness'.

As I said, each owner gets to decide for himself, my goal here is to make that as an informed a choice as is possible.

Regards.
