I finished a batch yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. I used 20 grams of duff in about 1 cup of coconut oil. What I found strange was that when the coconut oil separated from the water, the coconut oil was green and the water was brown. Any suggestions on why that would of happened would be appreciated.

So, I used a 1/4 cup of the coconut oil in the brownies and it ended up giving me a nice buzz all day long. It wasn't anything crazy, but I definitely felt the effects and I'm a heavy smoker. Next time around I'm going to use about 30 to 40 grams of duff and see how much stronger it is.
You started with a cup of coconut oil, after cooking and filtering what was your final yield? 1/4 cup?

Hi all - I'm a new member, and I thought I should chime in on this subject, as I've had a fair bit of experience with cooking weed in oil. While most of this cooking has been done with un-vaped herb, the principle is the same - the abv is just depleted to one degree or another.

A point of difference with my cooking method is that, instead of a frying pan (skillet to the Merkins here), I use a small saucepan and a thermometer. The small saucepan means deeper oil and therefore better temperature regulation, and also for the clip-on oil/candy thermometer, which you can find at most kitchenware retailers - at least you can where I live (Australia). And you can find them online of course. The ones here start from under $10 - for these glass tube bubble type things - perfectly adequate, as long as you're careful not to knock them, as they break easy. But you can pay a lot more for deluxe model thermometers if you want to.

Anyway, I pour the oil into the pan with the thermometer attached, heat it a bit, and dump my ground weed into the oil. My mind's not set on what the right temperature at which to do this is, but usually it'll be before the oil hits 100 C (212 F), ie below the boiling point of water. This is so I don't get the instant sizzle of the moisture in the weed hitting the hot oil - I like the effect of the slow release of the moisture creating bubbles and getting a convection flow. I'm not sure if cooking it like this actually helps, or makes any difference to the end result, but with abv it probably doesn't make much difference - as long as you're well below 180C.

180C to 190C, or about 355 to 375 F. That's where you need to reach - at least it is with my setup. I keep the oil at this temperature for probably 20 mins. Again, I'm not totally sure how long is optimum, but this seems to work well for me. It is also important to know that if the layer of weed in the oil is too thick it can hinder convection, create a hot spot, and burn (and the thermometer might not know about it) , so it's necessary to stir frequently. And I always keep my eye on that thermometer, as the temperature can change quite rapidly without warning or apparent cause.

So once finished, this oil is good to use as is. Make brownies or whatever you like. I'll often just toss a spoonful back with a mouthful of milk or soy.

PS It's also very nice in yoghurt - it gives it a kind of nutty flavour. There's my special chocolate yoghurt, where I take natural yoghurt and add a good helping of unsweetened cocoa, a moderate amount of sugar, and a dash of vanilla essence, plus the oil. Chocolate and yoghurt isn't a common combination from what I've seen, but I love it. And I like a strong, not-too-sweet chocolate flavour, hence the unsweetened cocoa.

Another new user here, but, like Qbit above, I thought I should post my method, as much for another data point as anything.

I use a Volcano, pulling two bags, one at 5.5, one at 6.5 (up to about 200C). My duff is about like vtac's on the first page, maybe a bit browner.

I've made quite a few batches of brownies with my duff, using oil or cannabutter made by several methods, and this is what I've settled on, so far. I use this recipe http://baking.about.com/od/brownies/r/ultimate.htm , which makes a more fudge-like (rather than cake-like) brownie. I think brownies made with butter are better than those made with oil, so I make cannabutter with my duff.

I've tried a few ways of making cannabutter, and I've settled on this, mostly because it's quick. I haven't been able to tell much difference between using this method, and, say, the water and butter boiling method where you must refrigerate the resulting mixture to separate the butter out. Since you can use this method's butter immediately, you don't have to plan a day ahead to make your brownies.

Like Qbit, I use a saucepan and candy thermometer, and simmer the butter (1/2 lb for the recipe + about 2 tbsp for "waste") with 12g of well ground (but not flour-like) duff at about 110C for 25-30 minutes. The lower temperature keeps the butter from burning (it becomes clarified butter, or ghee) and, from what I've read and experienced, should be a high enough temperature to allow all of the goodies to bond to the fat molecules.

I strain it through cheesecloth and a gold permanent coffee filter into a Pyrex measuring cup. You can squeeze most of it out through the cheesecloth, but inevitably there's some loss, and I end up with 1/2 cup of melted brownish butter, which has that vaped-remains smell. Since the first step in the recipe is to melt the butter and chocolate together, I only need to dump it in a saucepan and add the chocolate for a few minutes.

I cut the resulting brownies into 15 doses. Most people find one plenty, and two sometimes can couchlock me (a daily vapornaut). I find that most of the duff-taste is "baked out". The brownies, judged just as brownies, taste pretty darn good.

I'm thinking of changing to a double boiler so I don't have to watch the temp. The method of boiling the water & butter together achieves the same thing, using the water to regulate the temperature. I wonder, though, if boiling it in the water may have the added benefit of bonding any hydrophyllic inactive substances that you wouldn't want in the result anyway to the water, which is then drained off. I may try that method again, just to see if it improves the taste (not that it needs much), if not effectiveness.

Yo i'm a new member, I just made the ABV brownies yesterday. I had two pieces this morning when I woke up, and the brownies dominated me so far. But this was the first time i've ever eaten herb, so in general its a fairly new experience. I used the same recipe at the start of this thread with probably 20 grams of dirt mcgirt and a little more than 1/4 cup of canola oil. All in all they turned out awesome, not a shitty taste or repulsive as me and my friends thought it would be.

Well, if it was decent strength unvaped herb I'd go about 1/2 a gram's worth (assuming you have a fair tolerance), which, if my calculations are correct, would correspond to:

125/(15*2) ml = 4.2 ml = about a teaspoon

I guess you must be using ABV with green in it still, so I'd say there'd be a fair few goodies left in it. So yeah 2 teaspoons sounds like a good amount to try out. If you don't feel much after an hour, have some more. Careful you don't have too much, as you could end up lying on your floor for half the day. And yeah, you can just down the stuff by itself if you want. Mixing it with something or cooking it in a recipe is just for convenience, taste and presentation.

But anyway, your post was days ago. So I'm guessing that by now you would have already tucked into your oil. So how is it? Report please. :)

You can mix the oil in some yoghurt - it gives it a kind of nutty taste, and a creamier texture.

I have a warning.... :brow:

i followed vtacs recipe more or less. the only diff was that I used like 4g of misc duff and 6 g of some pretty decent unvaped mids.

As for preparation i followed vtacs original post to the T, and now I wish i would have made a less concentrated oil! hahahahaha

The reason I say that i have a warning is that after I got done, I left a note on the brownies..."Do not eat, special brownies!" Not that I didnt wanna share the goodness, but Im the only one in the house that likes to take the majic flight.

So anyway, my wife gets home about 2 hrs after im done, and im asleep at this point. So i guess she reads my note, dosnt think twice and pinches......and i mean literally just pinched the corner. Couldnt have gotten a good taste cause it looked like a full batch.

Well sometime after she pinched, she runs into the room saying that she dosnt know if she is dreaming....and cant tell weather she is hearing noises or they are real!!!!!....LOL

BE WARNED! used this shiz with caution:o

Bwahaha!! Reminds me of a Russian guy I met in Cambodia a couple of years ago, and the small slice of happy pizza he fed to his unsuspecting, non-weed-consuming wife. I told him it would be too much but he didn't take heed. More or less the same result. :D At least she had a nice tropical beach to recover on.

Mind you, even with a saturation-level weed tolerance I wouldn't go much more than about half a gram of good unvaped bud's worth of pot cuisine in one hit (more though, of course, when ABV or weaker green is used). But yeah, when you have no tolerance you hardly need anything.

Well, all you need to do is take a couple of weeks off ... hmm, ok, bad idea.

But then I guess you have the next best thing - your PD.

Fantastic info on the brownie recipe. It's a bit of a project but a fun and delicious project, it seems.
If you're from the fast and dirty school like me, check out this effective but sleazy simple alternative:
They're called "Firecrackers" - get some crackers and peanut butter from the store.
Mix your finely ground material in with some peanut butter.
Then spread the mixture on some crackers and then make sandwiches - putting the crackers together.
Put in the toaster oven and heat at 350 and take it out AS SOON as you start seeing smoke.
You're done.

Looks and taste like shit - worse than the buffet at the Holiday Inn - but it works very well.

I must try the brownie recipe though....

Sweet, SA! Maybe the oil method is more potent than what I did...just dumping all the ground up AVB in a mix. It doesn't make sense to me, but maybe it is.
You have to use the oil or butter method to extract the thc and make it combine with the oil or butter for it to be effective.

If you just put the avb or even unused stuff as it is into what you are cooking it will be very weak.

The thc is not water soluable, when eating our bodies find it much easier to absorb the thc when it has been extracted and bound in oil or butter.

edit: but dont use margarine, it wont work the same.

Well, this recipe worked out quite nicely; I'm still feeling the effects from last night.
Two brownies filled with PD duff and two PD tubes and i was tripping.
I didn't have an egg but I added a teaspoon of liquid lecithin prior to stirring.
Would be interested in a comparison just on the basis of effects between the brownie approach and the simpler "firecracker" approach -
there are a few recipes regarding the "firecracker" that get into the details more specifically.

Made 30 grams of duff butter last night...was counting on some other duff to 'spice' this up a tad bit more...but my friend with the extra duff flaked on me :/ Oh well this was still a solid amount to make my own version of Rice Krispies :brow:
