deadheadbill

I can see clearly now the smoke is gone...
So, I went with the ss hc. Any advice as to what roasting tubes I should get? I only want to mate it upside down on a a 18 mm bubbler and direct draw.

Get the turbo gong for the bubbler.

I also got 2 glass nipples that makes a nice small glass stem to use with direct draw but some might find the short path harsh on the throat. For me its fine, and the nipple fits confortably in the entrance of the hc.

if the nipples aren't an option, i would get a regular tube with a glass top or a glass nipple. ( i don't like silicone bowls, if silicone is used it has to be without being in contact with the bud or the air path. )

What about those steel tips that Alan makes which fit into the SS HC???
They look like they would be The Ticket for med conservation.

Also, how about that tube stopper ring Alan posted a few pages back??
Maybe you want one of them too, deadheadbill??

@Dafni - The new all stainless steel cores have a dimple to stop the 5/16" roasting tube and also to retain the screen. I have also made a couple of cores with an outside tube stop so that it will only insert a certain distance into an outside style roasting tube.

I see, thank you. I might still need to get me some of those SS tips to quench the curiosity, once my spot comes up. They look so neat.

What is a turbo gong? Haven't seen that on the site. Modified gong to work with glass nipple?

its the glass gong, :)

The nipple is a term coined by iloveb00bs who has not been on FC for a while, but i find it describes it quite well. :D

agreed.waiting can be a torture.

Theres a good reason for that.Alans work looks like its come out of a cnc set up.its perfection.I know he spends a lot of time on close up work and handfinishing his units.

the newer SS design in my opinion works extremely well and is just as efficient as the older model.
I like how the heatport can be easily removed in seconds.the inside can be swabbed and the heat port immersed in iso to sterilise.not an everyday thing but nice to have the ability if you have oil spill inside etc.

Thanks toros23. The new 18mm roasting tube design is working very well so far. Nice that I don't have to use as much material to get the optimum fill depth.

Speaking of roasting tube designs. Somebody was asking me about a tube modification that would prevent the HI 3/8" center tube from getting packed with material. I was telling them about the addition of the ring to the HI center tube to limit the depth of travel into the roasting tube when I got to thinking about adding a ring to the inside of the roasting tube instead. A 1/4" long piece of 3/8" tubing (ring) fits into a silicone Turbo Tube and sets on the screen to form a ss roasting chamber 5/16" diameter by 1/4" deep. It holds about as much as the 5/16" ss roasting tips and prevents the HI center tube from smashing the material. The silicone tube just provides the seal but the roasting is in stainless steel. I was using the 3/8" ss rings for the coupler in my slide-in ss tips, but the ss tubing I am now getting is slightly larger inside and doesn't work so I won't be able to make them any more. Will just have to use them inside Turbo Tubes now. The 3/8" ss ring would fall out of the glass or wood roasting bowls so it probably won't work so well in them. Don't want a hot ring of stainless steel rolling around. The ring fits snugly into the silicone which also prevents burns.

Introducing the Heat Island (HI) vaporizer. A new approach to direct draw convective vaporizers.

The heart of the HI is a ceramic heating element that is identical to the one in the Toasty Top and several other direct draw convective vaporizers. It operates from a 12 volt power supply and requires approximately 0.8 amps. The heating element threads into the bottom for easy cleaning / replacement as necessary. The HI uses heat island technology rather than a heat sink as with most conventional direct draw convective vaporizers. This means there is very little metal contact between the center stainless steel tube and the outer stainless steel tube. The HI uses as little metal as possible and is not able to transfer much heat away from the center tube out to the wood. Consequently, the wood stays relatively cool while the internal temperature reaches around 450F. The HI is 3-1/2" tall and can be as small as 1-1/2" in diameter. The internal stainless steel heat island weighs just 17 grams. There is a debris screen in the center tube as well as the space between the center and outer tubes. The HI can be made from virtually any wood as it has little impact on the final temperature. The power jack is located on the bottom of the unit. The right angled power plug is incorporated into the wood base so it sets upright like a conventional direct draw convective vaporizer.

Since the HI has such a small metal mass, it will start producing vapor after being plugged in for only 5 minutes. It may take an hour before the wood will start to feel warm. It is also designed for 24/7 operation. The HI does not lose temperature after each draw and it can be used for near continuous operation.

The HI can be used with two different roasting tube styles. It will accept 5/16" diameter (Toasty Tube and others) stainless steel roasting tubes inside the center tube as with traditional direct draw convective vaporizers. It will also accept my new 3/8" diameter (Turbo Tube and others) high temperature medical grade silicone roasting tubes on the outside of the center tube. The Turbo Tubes use a glass or polypropylene mouthpiece tube covered on one end with a section of silicone tubing that contains a stainless steel screen that is seated on the glass or poly mouthpiece as seen in the photo. The airflow is significantly higher than with the Toasty Tube.

The HI is perfect for use with water filtration due to the low air restriction. The Turbo Tube fits perfectly into a 14mm glass joint. The HI is so small you can hold it in the same hand while pulling the Turbo Tube to clear.

It may be small, but it is mighty. The HI does get you high.

I will be offering them for $140 which includes the power supply. Exotic woods will be an additional $10.

The Turbo Tubes are $10 and the new style Toasty Tubes are $15.

Still deciding how I want to approach selling them. Contact me at alan@toasty-top.com to make arrangements until then.
lol really looks cool.

Well...it's finally here. I'm just heating it up as we speak.

I can't get over how small it is. The ebony also looks 10X more spectacular in person.

Pics and details will be coming.

EDIT: So some quick updates. I've been using it with a glass stem and roasting tube. Running at between 10.5 and 10.8 on @CentiZen 's mini VVPS (this thing kicks ass btw, if you need a VVPS talk to him ASAP). The flavour is incredible right now. Haven't had a chance to use it with glass, not sure when I will because honestly this thing rocks with just stems.

To say the least, it's good to have the new HI. All the updates to this unit compared to the original ones are pretty substantial.

Ok, so I pulled out all my toys for this.

#1 I really regret not getting a Wood Stem

#2 I'm getting PD like efficiency with the Roasting Tubes and lower voltages. I'm LOVING it.

#3 I got a new appreciation for Turbo Tubes. I think I just used em at too high of a temp for my preferences before. The air flow on them is awesome and so is the tast around 11V.

#4 Pulled out my 14mm GonG adapter. Turned the voltage up to 12.2 and got great results with my bubbler. The beaker is still a bit too big to fill ideally, but only the EVO can ever really power that anyways.

All in all the HI is making me love logs again. And I love it.

I'll go out on a limb and say if your EVO can fill the beaker, then with proper JedHI technique you can get there with your beautiful new HI. I have never met a piece I couldn't milk with my HI.

Oh, I phrased that badly.

I've milked it to the MAX with the HI, I used a turbo tube and U-tube adapter together. It just requires exactly what you said, some proper JedHi technique. So I generally don't pull out the beaker with friend. One of them broke the turbo tube once when trying to go it...he though pushing down hard with the vape would help.

The HI can milk anything wall to wall, I just find I enjoy small to medium sized pieces best with it.
