Why do multi-millionares buy big-ass houses and shit?

My question generalizes very rich people, I know, but I do believe that it's still a fair question.

If I had millions dollars in disposable income, I'd live in a nice, small-medium house--something 'cozy', which big-ass 21st century houses don't seem to offer.

Actually, I think it would be cool to live in a nice, unpretentious apartment. instead of a house; but only if it's weed-friendly.

Because having a big house and a lot of property has been the goal of basically every person since the start of time? I dont think the want is limited to the wealthy. They just have the obvious means.

That being said id like to see how long you stick to that train of thought if someone were to deposit 20 mil in your account.

Sigh, now I'm lamenting having all house and no yard. I need an extra million or two for more sq ft and a larger plot... and a 3 car garage (two really isnt enough)... and space for a real man cave...

My house would be huge, but it wouldnt be any ordinary home, it would be huge for a reason.

As long as I could afford to run this huge dream compound of course..

Perhaps they should look into these mini-houses that are becoming popular. They're movable, like trailer homes, but REALLY nice designed by very forward modern thinkers... like what a fine craftman would live in if he didn't want to be tied down. You can get decent ones for around $10,000... buy a tiny cheap piece of unused land and just set up shop!

Imagine being able to just pick up your house and go... without feeling like trailer trash! Without feeling locked into mortgages... without feeling like Moving would just be too much work...

The more you have, the more you want.

Anyone here with a vaporizer/water piece collection knows exactly what I mean.

The super rich care about mortgages and moving expenses because why? Besides, why move when you can just buy another house? Its called having your cake and eating it too. Must be nice.

Well, no... I guess they wouldn't care, really. And I guess they COULD just buy another home.

But...

Fuck you. I guess I didn't really read this thread carefully enough.

Nevertheless, mini-houses are cool.

I will give you a rare insight to this because i am extremely blazed, anyway when i lived at home i was lucky enough that my dad had worked extremely hard to pull himself out of being dirt poor in new zealand to being an executive at investment bank. We lived in two large houses, one a big classic old mansion built in 1885, full works with servants qauters underneath, my resounding memory is one of being terrified by all the bad vibes and creeks and groans and animals living in the roof etc.

Next house was a huge modern monolithic technorgasem of a house, built in about 2008, i can tell you right now, that shit never works, all the modern crap is totally pointless and you never use any of it. We had the full smarthouse bonaza and its just dumb, we had this touchscreen control thing that could do all the ac, lights, music, blinds, fountains, etc etc etc but we always just walked over to these rooms and turned the switch like you normally would, becuase the technology is just flippent crap that doenst actually make your life easier.

I moved out in 2010, my life is just as happy living in a normal flat as it was living in a crazy big house.

I hope nobody gets the wrong idea about this post.

If i make it big i hope to own a medium sized property in an isolated, tropical rural area where i can grow awesome weed and have as much space to do whatever i want, throw huge loud parties, collect vintage cars and motorcycles and just enjoy the serenity. When you own fertile land you own something of real value, not just some inflated city apartment that is worth 50x what it cost to build because of inner city demand.

well, you don't know if there may be rich people that you just don't notice because they don't have a big house, car etc...

funny story about that wich my historyteacher in highschool told(I may have lost some details) : after worldwar 2 the US president was visiting european countries to decide how much marshallmoney they would get. so for example in france they get invited to the presidents'house wich ios some luxurious stateproperty, like the white house in the US. then they visit the netherlands, and they get invited to the minister-presidents' house, who lives in an ordinary house, no needless luxury(all of this is normal for a dutch minister-president btw, we only give them an officespace that is governmentproperty but no house), and they eat a regular meal cooked by the minister-presidents' wife.
this gives them the impression the netherlands must be doing not so well that they invite a US president in such circumstances, so we(the netherlands) got a relatively big share of the marshallmoney.

edit: another, maybe more aplicable story, from my family.
my greatgrandmother had some money saved up for just-in-case/for the kids to inherit. but she lived very simple, sober. she lived that way all her life, that's how she saved up the money in the first place, she didn't need luxury. so there was this guy who sometimes worked for her(if I remember correctly, it was a painter who painted her appartment) who charged her less money as his usual fee since 'she was such a poor old lady' not knowing what was actually in her bankaccount.

hm, and I think that you should wait untill that moment arrives and you have lots of money, I think that when you are truly rich you automatically change some of your ways because you can.
I have Always said, why pay that much more for first class seats in a plane? It's not worth the money, untill I had a free upgrade for me and my wife flying to Belgium from JFK because the plane was overbooked and we decided to stay so all the rest could go. (we also got a 500 dollar off coupon for the next flight we booked, free hot meal that night and we stayed in a fancy hotel, also for free, makes you think it's not abnormal some of those airlines are in tight shoes financially)
But man o man was that the best flight of my life ! If I ever am rich enough that I don't care for the extra costs of first class, I will Always fly first class.
I could affort it right now if I wanted but then I think, what else could I do with the money, this just means I'm not rich
I bet this will be the same with houses too, why not add a bowling alley or home theatre if you can?
I'm sure lots of people don't think like this but I'm even more sure that more people do think this way.
Either way, being rich will Always makes you act different, it might be small but you do things you otherwise wouldn't do, hell, I would buy ALL the vaporizers available for me, even if it had bad reviews on fc, just because I could...

Because to the uber-rich the cost of super-sizing their mansion is on par with us regular folk super-sizing our McDonald's meal.

It's all relative.

I remember reading about Bill Gates' house when he built it. The price tag was insane, but when I did the math, it would have been equivalent to someone at my income level spending $300 on a house. I spent about 1000x that on my house. So his decision was probably a lot easier than mine even though he spent millions & millions more than I did.

Dabs are vapor too!
The funny thing to me is after the grand entrance, the big foyer, the tiled halls etc, you get to their desk or
personal space, and it's tiny and cluttered. I've seen this several times. That's just weird to me, I have more space to work in my little office than they do.

You can only be in one room at a time, so unless each room is uniquely different, (Pool room, arcade, laundry room, chill area, etc.) I don't understand the appeal of a HUGE big-ass mother phucking mansion is LA.

I'd rather chill with "common" folk over rich bitches...no offense to persons who have earned wealth ethically and through hard work.

I have a few friends that are mind bendingly rich. Different strokes. One has huge mansion on the water and entertains friends and family all the time. One lives in a million dollar home, tastefully decorated and works hard, plays hard. One has recently renovated his parents home (dead) and he and his family will move in in about a month. All excellent people. Loyal, supporting, friendly.

I'm neither rich nor a homeowner. However, the four or five richest people I've known did NOT live in mansions. Richest people i ever met lived in a standard suburban development, no indication from the house that they were worth literally tens of billions. That may be a function of the area - dude was a major DoD guy. No clue where all the money came from.

2nd richest, my ex-wife's family (they never shared $$$ with me), live in mansions overseas but a standard North Jersey suburban house in the U.S. Again, from the outside no indication that the people are part of the .001%. Like 100 million in gold and ivory and (shudder) tiger skins inside a normal suburban cookie-cutter house.

Don't know if he's still like this, but when I was a kid, Bill Murray was on my Halloween trick-or-treat route, as was Helen Hayes (and probably some other famous New Yorkers i didn't recognize). No mansions or unusually big houses. Helen Hayes finally did move into a big one, but it was left to her by a friend. Bill gave out the biggest candy bars I've ever seen though.

On the other hand, building a giant house at least gets some of the money into the hands of real people, like carpenters, plumbers and other contractors. I'm actually more confused by people who sit on huge amounts of money and do nothing with it.

I think people build big houses as a testament to their wealth: they do it 'cause they can, regardless of need. My father, a developer, created upscale subdivisions. It seemed to me that most couples who bought these huge lots and built 5,000 + sq.ft. homes had grown children who had already fled the family home. Not all, of course.

Reasons why I'd get a big house if I was wealthy:

I could have a few really cozy rooms in my big house. Cozy bedroom with fireplace. Hell, I'd have fireplaces everywhere..........even the bathrooms.

I could have multiple guest rooms when family or friends come over to visit.

I'd have a cozy library.

Big kitchen with big dinning room for parties and such.

Porn room............gotta have a porn room to work out all the kinks.

Home theater room.

Computer gaming room..........maxed out.

Talk about working out kinks, how 'bout a message room, a sauna, a gym..........an indoor basketball court, indoor tennis court (would have outside courts as well)

HUGE garage to store all my bikes and cars that I collect and that I would ride and drive as well.

Stables for horses.

Grow room.

etc etc etc..................LOTS of reason to have a big house. LOTS of reasons.........

Alright, sweet. I get to flex my epeen here a bit! I've actually met him a few times before, an uncle of mine does some work for him (I won't get specific about it, no not illegal but kind of niche and would be easy to figure stuff out etc). The place I've seen him at (locally, I've run into him at a local taco shop too lol) is modest. Never been inside but it's not the biggest on the block. It's in a nice spot, don't get me wrong, but I've met people with less money and bigger houses. One of my dad's clients gave us a $3500 billiard table for an obscenely low price because she was moving from a 4k sqft mansion to another one in Texas that was cheaper (HAH!) and it would cost too much to transport it... She moved back a year and a half later to a slightly smaller house that only cost 4 mill... half of what she sold her first place for.

If I won the lottery...? Shit. Maybe I would get a decent-sized house. Nothing huge. My hobbies don't require too much space, so I could probably skip on a huge mansion and 10 car garage. For sure enough space to live comfortably and accommodate guests, and a grow room of course. Yeah, I say that now, who knows if I'd change my mind on that with that kind of money in hand to play with...
