The difference between a whole bud and a ground bud is that one is whole and one is ground, same bud, same flavors. In fact medium ground bud exposes more surface area to the heat allowing the release of much more vapor goodness than you could ever get out of a whole ground bud sitting in the Firefly bowl.

Ground bud produces a better, more powerful hit with much more intense flavors than a whole bud ever could. I am talking the Firefly only. There may be other vapes that can satisfactorily vape whole bud.

You're mistaking the amount of extraction (% of cannabinoids extracted at once) you get in one hit when it is grinded, with the different flavours you get in an ungrinded nugg.

The fact is, there are a lot of terpenes in the trichomes and those trichomes are lost when you grind your nug.

If you put a whole nug but there is a lot of space in the bowl where the air can go around it, the hot air will not successfully vaporize it. The air needs to go THROUGH it.

Of course the FF could be less efficient vaporizing a whole nug but the only thing that explains it is how the air goes through the bowl.
In the end, convection is a much better extraction process and since it is the hot air that vaporizes VS the contact heat in a conduction design, the surface exposed is less important.

Steama, ultra-negligible is something subjected to opinion. I notice a clear difference in the subtleties of the flavours and i have come to prefer my vaping ungrinded. Plus, the sessions last longer, it is one less thing to carry around, the flavour is better and i get higher.
When you grind, the first hit has more flavour (more intense because you extract more at once) but it is more bland, they are more equal between strains and there is a "green taste" to it. When you don't grind it is more floral.
It indeed is simple physics that a more exposed area releases more vapour at once, i never said the contrary to that. I agree.
The fact is the restriction has nothing to do with this. In fact a slower draw is better to fully extract and is more efficient since it does not lower temperature as much during the hit.
I always tend to use a slower draw.

And i said several times already that the point is not vapor production, it is maximizing flavour and terpene extraction.
Plus, after the first few hits you break the nug and you get the big hits anyway but with less flavour.

I'm not arguing what is better or what you should do, i never tried to do that.

Also, i never said take the bud out to grind Steama... i said i use a toothpick to poke and break it into smaller nugs. I don't use my fingers either.

I can't speak to the firefly, but my use of the vapolution 2 has led me to think that unground bud is more efficient due to it not having lost everything that is in the kief left behind in my grinder. the herbalaire was always touted as being very efficient and tasty and it didn't require grinding either.

I get that more surface area in ground bud leads to more even vaporization and thicker hits, but as to efficiency I can't make a definite statement one way or the other. When using the Ascent I would use ground bud in the bowl or a whole bud wrapped in cotton. It was my perception that the effects were similar when comparing weight/size of load.

I can tell you that the last four or five vapes I have tried have got me thinking we don't know shit about vaporization yet as a whole. There are so many variables that haven't been scientifically explored that we are left to describing subjectively. I think we all need to open our minds again to new possibilities and variables in the vaporization process.

Definitely! Although the science is there in many ways, you can find lots of scientific studies who explore cannabinoids and their boiling temps, what happens when they oxidate or what chain reactions can occur.

The problem is few vaporizer manufacturers have created the bridge between the chemistry of the plant and the physics of vaporizing with the engineering to find the best possible ways to build their vaporizers.

Most who are in the business are previous patients like Vitolo said in another thread, and the majority are just enthusiasts with more or less background in any of those areas.
Although i must say that i doesn't take an expert to build an excelent vape, some designs are so simple and work perfectly, sometimes all it takes is inteligence and creativity.

I think we understand a lot though, although we have so much more to figure out. The thing is cannabis itself is an amazingly complex plant and that alone changes many things in how it vaporizes and the percentage of cannabinoids has different assimilation rates wheter you use a conduction unit or a convection unit or a hybrid. If you use water, or not. If you start at the end of the temp spectrum or you go slowly because some cannabinoids transform themselves from the prolonged heat.
It is truly fascinating. :)

whenever you grind the bud with your hand, you arent going to lose many trichomes. most people have said hand grind is better than a grinder for the firefly anyways.

Scissors and a shot glass works as well as far as keeping as much kief on your buds as possible versus a grinder. I'm thinkin' of going back to that for my LSV for a bit and see how it works out.

I just cut a 1" x 2" piece of aluminum. Fold it down the center like you would fold a business card to make a scoop. Fold 1/4" over at the back edge and you now have a basic scoop. Now you just bend, twist, cut and fold to make a scoop customized to your needs. I made mine ergonomic with a flat bottom, flared top edges, and a handle the curves around my fingers grip.

Or you can purchase one from here: http://www.lotusvaporizer.com/

Goodluck

Me too. I love it. Pics? I'm too lazy, sorry.
LOLOLOL....i like that lotus thing...

Is the silver more white? Is it Bright like the read or more matt silver? A little hard to tell from the angle
