I go where the thrills are
I've found that the battery seems to operate at pretty even performance from beginning to when it starts blinking red. I seem to get good hits right up until I can't get anything at all.

Have you others been finding this?

Yes. Mine is totally consistent. I've been very surprised on the couple of occasions where it's died on me. Kinda snuck up on me.
You know, you could do a fine grind in the Firefly. All you would need to do is adjust your technique and experiment a bit.

I agree, I've used a fine grind a few times and didn't have overheating issues.

So anybody else think it's kinda odd that they already sold out of lids, external chargers, and battery lids???

Combustion...ruined that bowl plus the next one...don't think it fits my style...May eBay it while they are still new

Was not packed overly tight but grind from Mendo was fine...looking for something more portable I guess...back to the Pax for me

I think mitchgo61 mentioned something about cheapo grinders and the Firefly for the right grind?

I have some pretty damn good grinders and that was a tiny bit of a problem. My Spacecase and my Mendo Mulcher are a little aggressive for a consistent medium grind I found. I always end up with about a quarter of the material 'MFLB' fine — which is too fine for the Firefly imo.

I picked up one of those old school wood and nails grinders. It works perfectly for an even medium grind better than my spendy grinders.

Picked one up at ebay for under $5. I am impressed of how sharp looking and well it is built too.

Just jump in and do not be timid. You will never regret it. This is the best portable vape on the market. The draws taste and feel beautiful.
Just jump in and buy it...i probably will. This unit looks like a PERSONAL VAPE....meaning no sharing, one of those me time vapes like when you get home from work and you reach in your personal humidor and grab a Cuban fix a nice glass of Cognac...this vape looks like it could be the cuban cigar and cognac all in one...

Just curious why you would pack it with fine grind material after there being almost 20 pages of people telling you not to

Because I wanted to try what I normally do...obviously this is picky about what you put in...the hits were not anything different than my Pax and the hassle on the go of packing 3 bowls to get there isn't for me.

Keep doing what others say not to and see what new things you discover...You won't...(Not directed at anyone personally, just a life motto for my own business)

Others have stated they put on fine grind with no problem

EDIT: OK some lunchtime sessions....while taking photos getting ready to list firefly on ebay..i loaded same amount in pax and firefly.....adjusted my draw and grind...using the heater button until i feel vapor then let go and keep inhaling till i cant....I feel i got more quality and quantity hits from the firely than the pax...bigger more flavor clouds.

I do not think it is as portable as the Pax, and that is a biggy to me personally. That is the only knock really from me now after few uses. I will use it when i dont plan on gong anywhere but when i want to just blow myself away and not have to reload every few minutes, the Pax will always rule for a portable.

I now plan to keep it and use it as my shop piece since it is still easily concealable.

I've got a letter into Firefly and yep, combustion does happen...I don't think it has much to do with grind, since I don't grind. It does have alot to do with strain and technique. After using the Firefly for a couple weeks I've been able to identify why mine combusts and I don't do that. But for new people this may be a big issue. These are the most beautiful units but very finicky. Got some more new news from Firefly about cleaning the lid. I got a new rep. Stacey M. and she said;

"Additionally, we will be happy to do the same for the Lid. We have only had a few encounters with this concern, so this should not be a follow up issue. We do recommend to be gentle while cleaning the outside (viewing side) of the lid, as this is the side with the rubber seal. Additionally to only use soap and water, as alcohol could tamper with the adhesive. The inside however, does not have a rubber seal and therefore force and using the alcohol wipe can be used."

I have had two units and both have had issues with the seals. Like I've said, be carful with the seals. I have asked them to change their web page and their cleaning instructions and I think I might have ruffled some feathers. I hope not.

"So anybody else think it's kinda odd that they already sold out of lids, external chargers, and battery lids???"

It's very unusual for a new company to be out of so many advertised parts. Waiting for battery, charger and a new unit. They are out of stock. Remember my lid seal and the alcohol wipe provided?
Since there were no lids in stock they sent a whole new unit. Wow, thoght it would be great but...

I agree almost 100% but. Out of the blue, some of my purple train combusted. Now i've been using the Firefly with other strains and no combustions, maybe once. I have no clue why this happens. I don't grind and don't put powder in the unit. I went on to other strains without an issue. Go to the PTW and poof. Anyone got their rocket science hat on? The abv is darker than most other strains.

Every single vape on the market works a little bit differently from the others and requires that you adjust your ritual for optimum results. If you are not willing to use a tool the way it was intended I cannot see how you expect to achieve good results. It seems so obvious.

If adjustments are irritating then maybe combustion is the way to go. A vaporization lifestyle requires a bit more effort and knowledge of the variables.

Your motto in different words:
If you learn from others you won't learn it yourself. Your motto is exhausting and a recipe for failure.
Thanx for trying to sum me up in your own words after reading 3 posts.

People said you should not roll a baseball bat because it will void the warranty and not perform any better. 8 years later [link removed] would say otherwise...but thanx for your life advice, but i got this covered.

Back on topic, i do understand they are all different devices, i tried a fine ground because that was what i had already done and others had mentioned it did not matter in their units...do i really need to go quote those posts......

didnt know vapinig was for only for those that try to put down others when trying to defend a material object they paid for...and didnt invent

mod note: Edited to remove extra quote and link to commercial site.
The tone of this thread is turning nasty. All of you please try to be civil before things get out of hand.

He was just trying to help you, not blindly defend the FF. Since you used the device in a manner that's been explicitly discussed as being prone to combustion (yes, some of us have used fine grinds, but it isn't the recommended method, from users *or* the manufacturer), and defended it as "it's the way I like to do it", Steama was just trying to explain that all devices are different and require specialized approaches.

No one is being defensive about the FF. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But don't dismiss it out of hand as not usuable when you purposely ignore advice on best practices.

As for fine grind...try using the heat button for shorter periods of time, and work up to a longer draw. You might get decent results with some practice.

It isn't what you say, but how you say it...I can read between the lines of his comments.

I believe my heater button sticks so when I take my finger off it stays on, and I was drawing too slow.

Once I figured out the heater button and sped up my draw a touch it was night and day. No combustion since then, just the fact that it isn't hard to combust is annoying. It will happen to almost everyone at some point no matter how careful you are. my other device has never combusted in over a year of 3-4 medium packed bowls a day. May not be important to everyone.

I never stated it was not usable, i always stated it did not fit my style and what my issues are with it, which aren't many.

I see a lot of battery complaints but mine never gave an issue, again limited use but no issues at all. Quick charge, 30-40 min.

To me cleaning wasnt as easy as it looks due to all the edges in the lid and reading about the seal/iso issues.

Just some more initial impressions, as with all these devices, there are learning curves but some things about the device arent in the users control like size, ease of packing on the go, bowl size....those are important to some people like myself

Perfect vape for me on the go so far. Hits amazing, also like the bowl size. Definitely a learning curve but it was fun. Lasts me about 4-5 packed bowls on a battery charge. Idk how people are cleaning the bowls so quick but I get a few hits before I need to dump it.

If you have a faulty button that is sticking you might consider contacting FF about it. I'm sure they'll replace your unit if it's faulty. Just a thought.
None in stock to replace it with...no lids, no battery, no chargers and no battery covers.

But it wouldn't be any of those replacements parts. The button is part of the main unit...I'm sure they have some actual FF's in stock. (I'm sure they've warehoused a few to deal with faulty units and unhappy customers.)

If his button is truly sticking in, to the point where he's getting combustion because he doesn't even realize the button is stuck in the ON position, I would think FF would wanna know about that so they can rectify the situation. Just my 2 cents.

Honestly I wouldn't overly worry about the lid seal. The most recent advice from FF is that it's ok to use iso on the lid (but not on the OUTER surface of the unit). I personally use a small amount of iso on a paper towel on the inside of the lid...it's the only way to really clean the port assembly. There was also a great tip earlier (forget who shared it) that a dry cloth can clean off everything but the resin on the port window. This works great between iso cleanings...I use a microfiber cloth, the kind you can get super cheap at Amazon. Picks up everything, does a great job. (the tricky bit is getting the crap out of the cloth later on...but that's another story...)

I'm waiting. My second unit has some defects in the paint and prep for paint. A dent on the top of the back and 2 prominent grind or gouge marks under the paint. This is another part of the reply I got from Stacey M. @Firefly.

"In conclusion, as this is a replacement order and within the allotted time for returns we will happily exchange the dented or blemished parts once they arrive in stock. However in the future, please note that cosmetic damages are not included in the warranty. For the main unit, please read over my comments for each for better understanding."

This was a little upsetting cause of the first problem with their wipes and them to get a replacement unit that is no better or worse. My 1st unit was perfect except for the lid. Now my lid is perfect and the unit has dings. I have been communitcating with Sarah C. for some time and then I get this note emailed to me by Stacey M. I did not ding, grind or paint this unit, so I have no idea why she mentioned this part of their warranty. I have not gotten a reply from my 1/6/14 email.

Slightly Medicated

The same thing happened to my lid when I was cleaning it... within the first few hours. Luckily, I had the right tools to fix it. I took the time to take it apart and reset the gasket. It has held together really well since then. I imagine getting a assembly team to be both efficient and accurate is complicated. Such a small seal requires some finesse to put properly in to place. I could see how some of them might not be perfectly set in place during assembly. If the screws are not tight enough it allows the window to rotate... particularly while cleaning the window off. This can move the gasket out of place rather quickly.

Tip: You can use a toothpick to try and reset the gasket in place.

Thank you and I did exactly that. I had the tools and did put it back in place, the next time I cleaned it came partly out again. Then I use the trusty tooth pick and saved the day. It's a bugger to get it in properly. But after all these little learning issues and bad paint job, I just love the way it tastes and feels on my sick lungs. I plan to use my Firefly until it glows no more.

This was the paint I was complaining about...maybe I should use and let it go, but that note from the rep. got me thinking.

If it continues to be a problem I will but don't want to jump the gun and blame the device..most new toys fail for to user error. I think if I hold it different and pay attention to the button...harder than it sounds when vaping....it well be fine..if not the warranty will work

OK disagree with me, I can't force you to be right
I inquired via their webpage about my battery. I'm only getting two bowls worth before the FF shuts down and I have to give it a full recharge. Waiting to hear back.

Also asked about their specs calling for a Li-Po battery, but mine clearly says Li-ion. Not sure what the difference would be, but curious as to why the difference.

I looked up the difference.

"Lithium-polymer batteries can be dated back to the 1970′s. Their first design included a dry solid polymer electrolyte that resembled a plastic film. Therefore, this type of battery can result in credit card thin designs while still holding relatively good battery life. In addition, lithium-polymer batteries are very lightweight and have improved safety. However, these batteries will cost more to manufacture and have a worse energy density than lithium-ion batteries."

Lipo's can be made in allmost any shape and size. They are also good for applications where different temps are involved. It is also more expensive that the telephone batts/litium-ion's. And I don't think a Li-po would be having a memory issue. (They use them in RC cars for timed races, if they worked like yours is you would only get 2 laps out of 8.) 2 bowls is not enough, maybe they will tell you this, from Stacey M. @Firefly;

"In regards to the use of the unit and the battery, this can be from a few different concerns from the battery being on low charge to the unit being in cold weather. Cold weather can slow the battery when charging and while in use."

I'm pulling my hi-top early adopter boots on.
