Ascent Vaporizer by DaVinci

I'm noticing that my ascent is showing vapor/smoke with no weed in the chamber. Could this be older weed/thc/etc stuck in the corners etc? Anyone else see any off gassing?

Yes, it's common on used vapes. Condensate happens on any surface, including ABV, and normally evaporates off again. If you shut down before that happens it simply starts up again.

You can also 'detect' this sometimes changing strains. The first hits of the new stuff can have some taste of the prior strain.

The time for concern is before any bud has been introduced, there should be no THC in play then.

most likely it's the silicone, if you read back in this thread (or the thread of their old model) you can see that this is a common problem with the vapes of this company.

I disagree. This is a used vape? Any outgassing of catalysts from the rubber is either lone gone or sealed under a layer of condensate.

The time to look for such 'evil fumes' is before you put the evil weed in the first time. The OP should enjoy his unit, not go off chasing ghosts.

I noticed the same thing so I cleaned it well and tried again and there was no vapor. So I assume it was left over stuff in the bowl. There has been some off gassing problems noted by some owners though. Try giving it a good cleaning and then burn it off and see if the vapor stops. Sometimes it takes a little while to burn everything off.

Toothpick.

That's definitely one thing I don't like about this vape ... cleaning the bowl because of the sharp edges and acute angles in corners makes it really difficult to get it 100% clean ... you can get pretty close with ISO, qtip, and toothpick though :) ... close enough anyways and if you keep at it you'll get pretty much all of it (maybe not all the staining)

It also sucks that the grill is not removable at the bottom. I can see some pieces have gotten through and are stuck to it.

Edit. Does your guys' ascent show vapor etc with nothing in it? I'm just seeing if this is normal for a used ascent. You'll need a flashlight type since the vapor is not very dense at all.

I'm about to send in for my 3rd unit. Both of my previous ones died the same way. Stopped heating up/ charging.

Both were stealths.

I have been using cotton as my spacer. I sued this thing for its mobility and cotton just seemed easier for me than the flowers and it has worked great. I do pack a slightly larger bowl .25-.3 and put a piece of organic cotton ball on top. I can reuse it a few times since it already has the shape I need and it doesn't come out hot. It makes my stuff all nice and brown and I get long ass sessions off them.

However, the reliably thing is really a PIA. I'm going to have spent close to 70 bucks on shipping with this company when it's all said and done. My initial one came 1st week of November and I've going to have missed 2 weeks with it.

My stealth from back in August is still running strong (from the very first retail batch). I must've gotten very lucky since soooooo many people had problems with that first batch, but (knock on wood) this one has been perfect.

I know several posters have recommended that I exchange it for a newer batch one due to a few improvements, but after reading some of the issues folks are having with the new batch as well, I'm perfectly happy to keep this relic as-is.

It gets used every day, for about 20 minutes, loaded with a relatively small amount (I don't measure... just a tad more than covering the bottom of the oven) using cotton as a spacer. The temp stays at 387 the whole time.

It's been used exactly like that every single day for the past 4 months without an issue. I can't praise it enough.

Waiting on my 3rd one to get back for the same problem. It is a great unit when it works. I have read the very reliable Solo went through the same teething problems and it turned out great from what I have read. I am hoping for the same with the Ascent. Call me stupid but I am considering buying another so I don't have to go without while they get the problems worked out.

I personally don't think it's fair , for the owner to have to pay for shipping costs on repairs or exchanges . Not even one time.

I understand (and to some extent agree with) this idea, but paying for necessary return shipment in such cases was agreed to when you bought it. The conditions were clearly spelled out (or you'd have no return 'rights' at all......).

The alternative ('them' paying both ways) would mean everyone would have to pay more for their Ascents to cover this added expense. And how much more? Are we going to include the oft complained about high cost of international shipping (I can hear the 'why should I pay to cover some guy on the other side of the world....' already, can you?).

A tough nut, for sure. But one, I think, most makers carefully consider and basically come to the same 'solution' as most of the others take. I suspect most consider this idea in terms of cost/benefit, and probably consider it carefully.

Sadly, few are like Amazon in this respect......and Amazon no longer sells vapes......

Also if returning shipping was paid for some people would send them back for silly trivial reasons and in many cases there might not be anything wrong, just people not reading the manual .
I'm sure Davinci doesn't want to be paying shipping both ways because " My Ascent doesn't produce big enough clouds " etc

Excellent point! Every 'I just got my XX replacement and the clouds are bigger (I think)' could trigger another wave of returns. Lots of those no doubt hopeful repeats who 'didn't get one of the good ones last time'......

All in all a useful check for human nature? And again, far from unique with this maker.

Great insight, thanks.

Happy new year y'all! I've been lurking on this thread for the past 100 pages of posts or so. I'm in the camp of "want the Ascent, but don't have the time/money to deal with multiple returns issues". I believe in DV customer service, but I just can't be running back and forth to the post office multiple times, and anecdotal evidence on the thread indicates that, unfortunately, there's still a risk of that.

For folks like us, it would be cool if DV posted some stats on number of Ascents shipped and RMAs issued, or something that gives us some data on how close the Ascent is to being rock solid. As soon as my chances are really good of getting an issue-free unit, I'm ordering.

You bring up a good point. You must realize they will be more people coming on these forums to talk about the bad things concerning the Ascent than there will be people talking about the good things. It's the same on all forums. I've only had my Ascent for a little more than 2 weeks and so far it has been working flawlessly.

Mine is still working fine.
I waited for the second release an am glad I did but sometimes you just gotta go take the plunge and enjoy life.
If you dwell on your machine breaking down then maybe it just will.

Well, I've been waiting to get the Davinci Ascent for over a year now. Two days ago I finally got it. I decided to go with the Ascent over the PAX because of the glass vapor path and temp controls.

First, before even turning it on, I plugged it in for a full initial charge. After about 20 minutes it showed 100% charge. I left it plugged in for another hour to be sure. Then I performed a burn-inn procedure. I set the programmed mode for 375°, 400°, 425°, for 10 minutes at each temp. I ran this program 4 times. I then turned it on 425°and left it for a while. Then I turned it off once I couldn't sense any more "silicone" smell or taste (honestly, there wasn't really all that much of it in the first place). The unit remained plugged into the charger the entire time. My initial thoughts on build quality are very nice. The materials and packaging seem to be high quality.

It wasn't until the next day (Yesterday) that I finally tried it out. I have been anticipating this unit for a while now, and was really excited to try it. To be honest, I'm a bit underwhelmed.

First and foremost, it's not really delivering that much vapor. I have to crank it up past 400° to get anything. I'm filling the chamber about 50% with ground up herb, then compressing it with the oil jar. I've tried vaping with the oil jar left in, and I've tried it with the jar left out. I seem to get a little better results when leaving the jar in, but it's still not that great. In fact, on new-years eave, I tried it with a friend and we really couldn't get much vapor out of it at all. We wound up just smoking out of a bowl instead. Not something I felt very good about after just dropping over $250 and waiting over a year :-/.

Now I'm not saying I don't feel it it all. I do, a bit. And I realize that this is a portable unit, and can't be compared with home units in terms of vapor cloud production. I'm not doing that. I used to own an iOlite / i-Inhale, and I was able to get larger "plumes" or "vapor clouds" out of that unit than I am out of the new Ascent I just got. I haven't given up just yet. I will try to do a couple sessions with the material not-packed to see if this helps. I will also order these "glass flowers" that people seem to be having good success with. Maybe that will improve the experience.

There is another thing. This is more of an inconvenience, rather than a "show-stopper" like the earlier issue I mentioned. I really love the programmed mode. I think that is such a cool feature. I love being able to set 3 temperatures, and the time.

Here is the problem: once the time on the third temp setting runs out, it starts to power down the unit. I can't seem to override this. I find myself having to turn the unit off and on again. I would like it to just stay on the final temp setting after the time runs out, and possibly allow manual temp control.

Yes, turning the unit off and on is a viable work-around. However, I find that by the time I notice the time is up, it has already started to cool off. I'd like a way to keep this from happening. I wonder if there is any possibility of a firmware update to address this issue.....

Overall, I think this unit is OK, although I expected a lot more than just "OK" out of it. I'd be lying if I said I'm not starting to doubt my decision to go with the Ascent over the PAX.

I'd appreciate any comments any of you folks have regarding my experience.

I don't know this for a fact but I think some units work better than others. I wonder about the accuracy of the heater. I heat up to 395 degrees and slowly go up to 420 and when I take the abv out, its dark.

Vapor escapes from the grill area, I think that's part of the problem, but I've heard others say they have vapor coming out of the grill. I hear others raving about how medicated they get. I got pretty medicated on one occasion because it was the most awesome herb.

Big clouds do happen with the Ascent but it doesn't get me as medicated as with other portable vaporizers. I have the glass flowers and I have been using the oil jar to weigh down the herb so it doesn't fly around.
I also have been using the cotton on top to keep things clean by the screen. At one point I thought that it was working better for me, and thought that I had mastered the learning curve.

When I try the same herb with my Pinnacle Pro or my Solo, I have a more successful session.
$239. is a lot to pay for something that works just OK for me.

I have been hearing a lot of happy customers who bought the Ascent. I wish I could say that I loved it too. All this is not a reason to send the unit back though. I may decide to eventually sell it.
